We have cross country flights booked in a week and i'm not willing to be stranded while Southwest continues to meltdown. I'm super bummed because they're my favorite airline to fly but after talking to a few friends who are employed with them they've said it's so bad they can't even get flight assignments and they suggest I book with someone else.
Wah.
We're flying out of either a DC, Baltimore, or Richmond airport and into Las Vegas. It looks like only frontier and spirit have nonstops, are they as bad as people say with legroom and charges? We have credits with delta and american but i'm kind of worried about layovers being delayed and whatnot. we don't have anywhere to be but I just don't want to start the trip with nonsense.
What airline do you prefer and why?

I tend to fly American a lot as I'm in DFW and it's a hub.
I can get most places nonstop and haven't done a layover in years.
I think i would stay away from Frontier and Spirit if you can. All I've heard is horror stories about both airlines.

My son and his GF flew here from San Diego at the beginning of the month, on Frontier, and it was a total shitshow for them. The worst was when they tried to make his GF pay to check her carry on bag (for $90!!) because the strap on it was hanging over the side of the thing you put it in to make sure it is the right size. It was a back pack, that fit with room to spare, but she just set it in there and the strap were hanging over the side. So ridiculous.

Alaska is always my first choice. If they don't have the flight I need, Delta is my number 2. I really dislike American - the legroom is soooo tiny.
I would never ever fly either Frontier or Spirit. And I swore off Southwest after an awful experience in March.

Delta for me. I've rarely had any issues with them, and they treat me great.

Jet Blue is my favorite. We try to fly out of Long Beach AirPort instead of LAX if possible, then try Jet Blue as much as possible. We’ll sometimes pick a vacation destination based on these 2 factors.

Delta all the way and I'm so glad I moved to Atlanta where it's easy to fly Delta. In PA I was often forced to fly American, hate them. Or was it United? Both suck. In any case, Delta is the best for service and comfort in my experience and of the flights I would normally take.

We usually fly American. It's the most convenient based on our location and the most nonstops for us which is my first consideration. I hate layovers. Love JetBlue and we also like Alaska. We haven't really ever had big problems with any of them. Never been on Spirit or Frontier but based on stories from friends, I never would either. Isn't Frontier the one who just got rid of their telephone customer service? You have to text them or contact them on social media now. That would be a big nope from me.

United or Delta. Someone flew on Spirit a few times this past two weeks, and they had no issues. I personally wouldn't fly Spirit or Frontier, but he had a good experience during this mess. I prefer nonstops if I can get them.

I can't imagine myself actually using frontier or spirit but I was starting to consider whether a layover would be worse than using them. I've heard too many horror stories, i'm out.
I can't find a direct with delta from any of the localish airports....now i'm trying to decide on a layover or another airline. This sucks!

I am Alaska loyal and always fly them if there is a reasonably-priced option. I am at a hub. Very seldom have I had any issues.
I hate uncertainty; I used to fly an east-coast airline without assigned seating (because of where it flew) and that drove me insane.

United or their affiliates only. We’re in their hub and that’s where all our airline points are. The cattle call of Southwest’s boarding used to give me huge anxiety when we flew with them. I like knowing where I’m going to sit and with whom, regardless of how early I check in.

We fly United almost exclusively. Dh has flown them so much for business that he usually has points for a free ticket for at least one of us. Occasionally, we have flown JetBlue down to FL, because they have a lot of flights between the DC area and FL and tend to be priced in line with Southwest.
It is so tempting when you search CheapoAir or Travelocity or Expedia and Spirit and Frontier seem so reasonably priced compared to everyone else, but I have heard horror story after horror story about their actual service, making it so that I won’t ever book them unless there was absolutely no other option.

My first preference is a non US airline because the US airlines all seem to be in a race to the bottom. Being in Houston means you are beholden to United, especially if you want non-stop. Delta is our preference but we are limited on nonstop routes. DH has had multiple major screwups on United in the past 3 years so he is ready to consider layovers more now. Jet Blue is pretty good but I rarely fly to the NE. Never Southwest because of the cattle call boarding. And they aren’t any cheaper than the majors most of the time.

THE issues my friends have had with Spirit or Frontier make southwest seem like a luxury airline. But after the meltdown of the last 5 or so days, I completely understand your fear..... When we fly its southwest or delta. We even have friends trying to get back to Baltimore from South Carolina for the last three days on American airlines and her flight has been cancelled every day since Monday Friend has been trying to get back to Atlanta after their united flights were cancelled for 4 days in a row... They ended up renting a car one way from Cleveland.
I think its just a complete sh!tshow trying to recover from the weather issues and holiday travel

It looks like only frontier and spirit have nonstops Ugh, nonstop is always my first choice, but I'd be looking at other options. Alaska, United or Delta are where I look first.

It happens to be the closest but even when it wasn’t it was my fave. Not that I’ve flown in years. The Metro has been extended to it if that matters. (If any of this has already been said, my apologies. I wanted to respond and only had a couple minutes before a telemed appointment.)

Alaska. Being a hub is helpful in getting where we need to go. Also, a smaller airport opened not far from us (a 10 minute drive from the mainland ferry terminal) and it is a day to celebrate when we can fly out of there instead of braving Seatac.
We also have the Alaska visa card for airline points. Any large purchase is made using our card and paid off immediately. We end up paying very little for flights.

DS flies with American Airlines. Other than a lost suitcase due to the weather last week, they've been great.
I can't remember who my other DS uses when he goes to FL.

I’m really hoping Southwest has their shit together by this weekend because my mother is supposed to fly to Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, January 4. Trying to rebook as I’m looking at other airlines might be hard because her car is being transported and we’re not sure if the car can just be left where she’s headed for a day or two if we have to rebook and can’t get her out till Friday. What a mess.
What search engine do you use to find the best flights and hopefully maybe a direct flight? I might need to start looking for her.

Delta all the way...but, I'm also generally flying from Seattle to Atlanta or JFK and there are lots of choices. Alaska is my second choice.
I'm really not sure I would pick a flight on a different airline. Mostly because if work is paying, I select Delta. If I am paying, I have Delta points to redeem. I've done Alaska a couple times from Seattle to So Cal, because other folks in my group were paying and Alaska had the best rates.
No to even looking at Southwest, Frontier or Spirit.

What airline do you prefer and why? If you already have the flights booked and it is only a week out, I’d either stick with your current tickets or postpone the trip. Booking anything less than 2 weeks out means that the prices will be high no matter who you fly with (outside of frontier and spirit). Unless price isn’t really an issue, then spending $550+ per round trip ticket is probably what you are stuck with. Also be prepared for potential snags, no matter who you fly with. Weather could be awful in any region of the USA that gets snow in January, setting off a chain reaction of cancelled and postponed flights.

I fly Spirit all the time and have never had a problem. I'm in Texas and DD goes to college in Florida and the prices just can't be beat. We don't fly with luggage, just a carry on back pack. I'm flying from DFW to Ft Lauderdale in January for DD's birthday for $41 round trip. DD flew home for Christmas for $75 round trip. I've heard the horror stories but most seem to be related to luggage issues. I've learned to pack very light and enjoy getting to see my girl more often than I would if I flew American or Delta! For this first semester between DD and I we've flown Spirit at least 7 times with no issues whatsoever.

We fly United almost exclusively - we're near one of their hubs so we can almost always fly them nonstop. Plus once you build status on an airline it makes a huge difference. I'd seriously consider how far it would be to drive to a hub of a major airline vs taking Frontier or spirit. Although I will say, my son flew Frontier last year when we had something like 4 different flights booked during a storm and the one airline that went forward and got him there was Frontier - but be prepared for extreme nickel and diming - which just drives me bonkers.

I fly Delta whenever possible. I HATE Southwest and American with every fiber of my being and would cease travel if these were the only airlines available.
