What search engine do you use to find the best flights and hopefully maybe a direct flight? I might need to start looking for her. Google.com/flightsI always start my research here, then book directly with the airline. You will have more options by booking directly than if you go through a 3rd party (Expedia, Priceline, etc) if/when things go south. You can set the filters to specify that you want non-stop flights.

We try to fly Delta if at all possible. I fly them almost exclusively for both work and personal travel. Here is an example of their great customer service that just happened last night/this morning.
My sister-in-law's Southwest flight for yesterday morning got cancelled the day before (I talked about it in another thread.) I was able to book her on a Delta flight for last night using miles I had in my account. DSIL is at the airport last night, at the gate, and there is a mechanical issue with the plane. By the time they were going to have it fixed the crew would be over their allowed hours so the flight wasn't going to be able to leave until 7:00 this morning. Delta provided a hotel room, transportation and meals to every passenger, plus gave them a $100 voucher to use in the future. That is what I call customer service!

Usually we prefer Southwest because we have never experienced problems with them. I will be reconsidering though.
In November we flew American with our layover in DFW and it was a shit show and both dh and I vowed to never use that airline again. Dh and dd had used American a year prior also through DFW and didn't have a good experience.

We fly Southwest because it's the only airline that has a direct flight from Syracuse to Tampa and Orlando. We have never had a problem with them...knock on wood.

We have cross country flights booked in a week and i'm not willing to be stranded while Southwest continues to meltdown. I'm super bummed because they're my favorite airline to fly but after talking to a few friends who are employed with them they've said it's so bad they can't even get flight assignments and they suggest I book with someone else. Wah. We're flying out of either a DC, Baltimore, or Richmond airport and into Las Vegas. It looks like only frontier and spirit have nonstops, are they as bad as people say with legroom and charges? We have credits with delta and american but i'm kind of worried about layovers being delayed and whatnot. we don't have anywhere to be but I just don't want to start the trip with nonsense. What airline do you prefer and why? Have you considered Dulles in Northern VA instead of National in DC? That’s my preferred airport. It happens to be the closest but even when it wasn’t it was my fave. Not that I’ve flown in years. The Metro has been extended to it if that matters. (If any of this has already been said, my apologies. I wanted to respond and only had a couple minutes before a telemed appointment.) Were looking at dulles, national, bwi, and richmond. They all have sucky options

I’m really hoping Southwest has their shit together by this weekend because my mother is supposed to fly to Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, January 4. Trying to rebook as I’m looking at other airlines might be hard because her car is being transported and we’re not sure if the car can just be left where she’s headed for a day or two if we have to rebook and can’t get her out till Friday. What a mess. What search engine do you use to find the best flights and hopefully maybe a direct flight? I might need to start looking for her. I usually just go to flights.google.com or direct to the airline site for comparison after troubles with credits and refunds previously.

Also be prepared for potential snags, no matter who you fly with. Weather could be awful in any region of the USA that gets snow in January, setting off a chain reaction of cancelled and postponed flights. Yes, we (the west coast) have a forecast of a least a week of rain starting after Jan 1st. Those storms move eastwards, so it may affect travel.

They may have something to Vegas that's nonstop.

My airline choice depends upon where I am going and how long I have to make my reservations.

Delta is always my first choice and United is my second choice.
I used to fly Southwest back when they were cheaper than other airlines and always very reliable. I never really cared about not having an assigned seat. I will always try to avoid Southwest after three horrible experiences w/ Southwest in the past two years, the most recent being this week when my daughter's flight home to Raleigh was cancelled on Monday. Like tens of thousands of other stranded Southwest passengers, she couldn't get through to customer service to rebook. She ended up paying almost $500 for a one way American flight to Charlotte on Tuesday, then rented a car and drove on home to Raleigh.
I've flown Spirit airlines several times and never had a problem with flights running late or being cancelled altogether. It would never be my first choice, but I wouldn't hesitate to fly them again in a pinch.

We are almost always Delta and never a major problem. Delayed once out of Maui but it was due to a crack in the windshield. Cool cool—please fix that.
We have used Sun Country in the past and been happy, but it’s been awhile.

I have a story to tell about each airline. Rude employees, lying about “weather” delays, lost luggage, no space in the seats, crummy, food, … you get the idea. For each of those airlines, I probably have 1 or 2 excellent reviews as well. Pick the best route and keep your fingers crossed. Personally, at this time of year, I would choose a direct flight as my primary consideration.
But I can see why you are bailing out on Southwest. They had a 71% cancelation rate with over 2,900 flights canceled on December 26, blaming the weather. American had the next highest US cancelation rate and canceled 14 flights (not even 1%). My Faredrop email this morning said that it’s not going to get better any time soon.

We fly American because that is the only thing our 1 terminal airport flies... and it ONLY takes you to DFW and you connect to somewhere else from there... lol
We have no choice unless its to drive to a major city with more airline options

Because we have an Alaska Airlines credit card and get mileage, that's who I use.

Alaska is always my first choice. If they don't have the flight I need, Delta is my number 2. I really dislike American - the legroom is soooo tiny. I would never ever fly either Frontier or Spirit. And I swore off Southwest after an awful experience in March. This is me too (well, except for the awful experience in March part). I've had my own share of bad airline experiences with SW.

Delta or American. Frontier has been a nightmare the couple times I've flown them. Never again! We took SWA to Hawaii this past summer and it was barebones but totally fine. But I don't think I'll be flying them anytime soon (ever?).

We only fly Southwest. I don't think I would know how to fly on any other airline Hopefully they fix their mess by next month when we get out of the MN cold and take our cruise.

As a family we tend to fly Delta and Southwest quite a bit. I have never had a problem with Southwest before, but this mess has me doubting I will fly with them anytime soon. I feel awful for everyone involved! My husband travels for business a lot and flies United, American or Delta.
One airline I will never fly again is Spirit. My father in law died suddenly 5 years ago. My husband was in China for work when it happened and his job got him on the next flight out. The only non-stop flight I could get the next morning to California where my husband's family lives was on Spirit. All other non-stops with other airlines were booked. I knew the reviews, so we bought one way tickets and booked with Southwest coming back. Spirit got us there, but it was an unpleasant experience. I'll never do it again.

Haven't read everyone's responses but have you checked Allegient Air out of Hagerstown? My DD uses it frequently. Yes they will nickel and dime you but they seem dependable.

Jet Blue is my favorite. We try to fly out of Long Beach AirPort instead of LAX if possible, then try Jet Blue as much as possible. We’ll sometimes pick a vacation destination based on these 2 factors. Jet Blue hasn't flown out of LGB for 2yrs. Southwest flies out of there now.

Delta is the best choice. They are very good at accommodating passengers if there are cancellations. I would try to fly out of the least busy of those airports. DC would be last on my list.

I have been flying American the past few years.
No Delta after a NOLA/Atlanta fiasco
I will only book directly through the airline web site

I go between Ohio and Florida a lot and tend to use Frontier. For 2 1/2 hours and with no luggage, it’s great. Plus it’s cheap. Long haul it would not be my choice.

My mom has Them as a back up just in case Southwest doesn’t fly out next Wednesday. She has luggage so we did pay for that but I’m hoping she has a good flight. It’s direct so hopefully that will help too.

Delta is my favorite, and I fly often for work.
I feel like they're the "adults in the room" of the airline industry. lol
Layovers don't necessarily mean stress and trouble. A few tips - if your layover is going to be short and you're stressed about making the next gate, book the seat in the first plane as far up front as you can get and keep your carry on with you unless they insist on taking it below if they run out of overhead room.
Safe travels!

Air Canada has been the worst flight experience I've had in the last 2 years. In fact, I currently have $3000 in credit with this airline because of the shitshow they put on in July this summer. In one instance, they canceled our boarding passes while we were sitting at the gate waiting to board.
