mollycoddle That is horrifying. Shouldn’t everyone be encouraged to save money? If you have more then a few thousand, you don't need help.

That wouldn’t sustain anyone for much more than a month in this day & age with current rental costs & food costs. But hey, pull yourself up by the bootstraps & all…

I didn’t even think of that. I can’t imagine being so vulnerable and not being able to plan. Maybe tuck some cash away but that’s scary to. I think this every time this is brought up that they can’t have money in savings beyond 2-3k. I agree the system needs to change. 2-3k really doesn’t go very far these days not that it would be easy to save up that much while being in a limited income to begin with. Hugs to those in this situation. It’s not even a rental deposit in most places Not even close here in California. .

If you’re on disability you are not allowed to have savings…you cannot have more resources than $2000 in the bank or $3000 for 2 people. So exactly how are people on SSDI supposed to save money no matter how long they have to do so? ‘Resources’ include anything ‘given’ to you by others ( if they can find it or trace it ) it’s a disgusting system meant to keep a person down. That is horrifying. Shouldn’t everyone be encouraged to save money? I totally agree. I think this needs to be updated. I understand not having tens of thousands but to only have so little. That’s not going to cover much in an emergency. That wouldn’t cover a single months rent around here unless you are lucky enough to live in subsidized housing. It would be awful hard to get ahead if you can’t save money. That forces you to constantly live paycheck to paycheck. Having to buy a car on credit etc

A few thousand might be dental treatment, a 2nd hand car (or deposit on one), funeral expenses, moving costs etc etc. Out of the ordinary costs that need to be saved for.

Sarcastic in that is what the government thinks, but it is true... With disability/Medicaid you are not allowed to have over 2000-3000 dollars.. And assorted other things. You are trapped in poverty.

I’m worried about the debt ceiling in September. I hope everyone that may be effected can start putting a bit away in case things are shut down for a while and don’t get their military or social security payments.if course this effects those most at risk. At least there is more warning than normal. It doesn’t seem to make the news until the last minute usually. Worst case if it doesn’t happen is they have more in savings but I think most have been pretty clear they won’t vote to raise it next time. They are mad they didn’t get to shut it down now. It’s really a sick system and it’s disgusting and they want to cut it further.

That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of to encourage people to not save. The latest from the GOP is just bizzarre.,

They relish their punishing those who are not in their 'class'...

ssi income is max $914 a month.. even in the most expensive places.. it doesn't even meet the poverty level. so you are allowed to live a miserable life.. if you have a disability, or mental illness.. another reason many are on the street.. you can't get out of that and you are one disaster away from the street if you are housed .

Oh, I believe that. I have found that you need to have a decent amount of savings because life has a way of blowing up in your face and costing lots of money. And it’s misguided, IMO, that allowed savings are such low amounts-for anyone.

If you are on SSI or supplemental security income that is true. If you are on social security disability, it doesn’t matter what you have in assets or savings so the same does not hold true. SSI is for people who never worked or have run out of work credits. There is a difference between the two.

I love her so much. I read she’s exploring running for senate if Feinstein retires.

Who could live on that? Is there anyplace you could currently survive on that? I know California is expensive but even just renting a room with other expenses would cost more than that. ETA and we are in a cheaper part of Southern California.
