on a side note, why are there children on the House floor? what's the story behind that? just curious. poor things must be bore out of their minds. Because usually the first day is a party day. The speaker vote is procedural, but the rest of the day is friends and family hanging out and seeing their person sworn in. Normally, it's a cool thing for Mom or Dad to officially be a member of Congress. I'm surprised no one had the slightest inkling today was not going to go well with that"procedural" vote 😂

This is what Gaetz and his crew are demanding. www.nytimes.com/live/2023/01/03/us/house-speaker-vote#heres-what-mccarthys-detractors-are-demandingAs Representative Kevin McCarthy of California has scrounged for the votes to become speaker, a core group of hard-right Republicans has laid out a series of demands crucial to winning their support.
As part of a grueling, monthslong negotiation to lock down the support he needs, Mr. McCarthy agreed to some of the demands from members of the House Freedom Caucus — a group that includes Representatives Matt Gaetz of Florida, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, and Scott Perry of Pennsylvania — and incorporated them in a proposed package of rules governing how the House operates for the next two years.
They included a rule to allow a vote at any time to oust the speaker, which would weaken the post considerably, though Mr. McCarthy proposed to set the threshold for forcing such a vote at five lawmakers rather than a single one, as the holdouts had demanded.
The package also included the so-called Holman rule, which allows lawmakers to use spending bills to defund specific programs and fire federal officials or reduce their pay.
But Mr. McCarthy refused to accede to a number of other conditions set by his critics. Here are some of the other demands:
Promising to hold votes on a series of bills backed by hard-right members, including legislation that would require term limits for members of Congress, a balanced federal budget and fortifying security at the southwestern border.
Pledging that the leading Republican political action committee would not fund challengers in party primaries. The demand reflects anger among right-wing and conservative groups toward Mr. McCarthy for using the leadership PAC aligned with him to back more mainstream candidates.
Adopting a requirement that any spending earmark receive two-thirds support of the House in order to pass.Something they graciously call the, "We own your ass, Kevin" platform. I wonder if, when he "dreamed" of having this position, he pictured his own party making it impossible for him to succeed. Self-absorbed clowns.

Rather than positioning themselves for sound bites?

I just saw this and … well, it speaks for itself. 🤔🥴 “…a tiny amount of dissent and debate.” 😆 Sure, sure. Their actions today must be part of some brilliant, top-secret plan. The lack of self-awareness in that tweet is astounding.

I suspect all or most of those calls were more in his head then actually happened. If true, it's in step with his pattern of wanting the media to focus on HIM, and what HE might be thinking. Blech.

Well he is not supporting McCarthy.. On Tuesday, NBC News reporter Garrett Haake revealed the former President Donald Trump is no longer publicly committing to supporting House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy after he became the first party leader to lose his initial election for Speaker since 1923.Former President Trump declined to say if he's sticking by his endorsement of Kevin McCarthy for speaker tonight, telling me in a brief phone interview he's had calls all day asking for support, and 'We'll see what happens. We'll see how it all works out,'" reported Haake. "When I asked directly if he was sticking by McCarthy, who did not clinch the gavel today after three floor votes, Mr. Trump told me 'we'll see what happens,' and ended our conversation." This stands in contrast to Trump's attitude in the weeks leading up to the vote. www.rawstory.com/trump-kevin-mccarthy-2659063255/

There has been almost no mention of George Santos, or whatever his real name is. I saw a few photos on Twitter…one where he was lost in the basement, trying to avoid reporters. Then a photo of him sitting all alone, with no one talking to him. I saved the best one for last…he’s sitting there, yawning. Great start.

As someone who lives in Ohio-4 district, I can tell you that “Gym” Jordan is an a$$, is worthless, and has done nothing for his constituents.

this vote seems to be a great metaphor for the Republican party. Disorganised, pointless, divisive, and wasting everyone's time.

Don't forget the clip of him picking his nose and flicking it. If anyone is thrilled over this Speaker vote distraction, it's Santos. Takes the heat off him for now.

I thought there had to be a Speaker before he could be sworn in. That link must be something preliminary.

As someone who lives in Ohio-4 district, I can tell you that “Gym” Jordan is an a$$, is worthless, and has done nothing for his constituents. And yet, he was re-elected 9 times. At least 2 times after it became clear he protected a sexual assaulter. Honestly, that says a lot about his constituents & what they stand for. IMO Worthless is as worthless does.

Our district is one of the most gerrymandered districts in the country. Cracking, stacking, and packing are the three most common techniques used to dilute minority voting strength. Don’t refer to me as worthless.
