I am so glad to read this update about your younger son, angel. And the positive news about your older son. I remember corresponding with you a few years ago and have always thought about you and your sons. Will be sending all my positive thoughts. Please keep us posted! Thank you! We've tried so many things, and hit many dead ends. The school just was not understanding. We are truly hoping this will be a positive outcome!

Older DS23 texted me a photo of his acceptance into the United Brotherhood of Carpenters apprentice program following his completion of training at Job Corps. Still waiting for more communication towards reconciliation.

A post on FB states they have 165 candidates in his class. No news is still good news.
BUT at home DS's dog (he was her human) has made herself sick because he is gone. Official Diagnosis today at the Vet was Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, stress induced. Poor girl! Totally treatable. She stopped eating on Friday, bloody stools yesterday. Love our Vet and have her on the right track.

Well . . . got our first really positive, upbeat letter from our candidate at OYCP today! We figure the riff raff has been sorted out of the program, as those who were not serious quit, and others got kicked out for violence. He still has until Friday until he finishes the toughest part of the program, the pure boot camp portion. Believe me the letter made this Mama's heart happy. (The first five of seven letters were super negative: begging to come home, childish, threatening, bargaining--hard to read!)
Another positive to report, his doggo has made an excellent recovery. Turns out IF I had waited another day or two it was possible we would have lost her! When they become too dehydrated due to diarrhea, vomiting, and lack of water/food their blood starts to coagulate. Once that happens they are hard to save. She is down to two meds a day, an antibiotic and probiotic until they are gone.  |

Another update! A team building exercise for OYCP is to keep a large inflated ball in the air. The long-standing record WAS 320 lofts, DS's platoon broke that record with 449 lofts. Today was their Challenge Adventure day. Time to actually talk to one another, team building exercises and decompression from the grueling first two weeks. We received a second really positive letter today, following up yesterday's break through which happened for him around Jan 18th. We are so very thankful that he has preserved through the tough 14 days of "boot camp by the numbers" learning to listen!

I realized that when I see a post with a green background I stop breathing while reading it and exhale when the update is positive.
So hoping the good news continues and any bumps in the road are small ones, and your DS keeps on keeping on! You’ve put forth mountains of effort and deserve a respite. And congrats about your other DS in his apprentice carpentry program!

Reached a milestone today! Graduated from candidate in red stage to Cadet in white stage! Letters show improvement but FASD brain does show through in some of his writing.

Who is bullying him and why is it being allowed? The first kids selected for leadership are over-stepping their power in his eyes . . . other kids are saying the staff "hate him". We have no proof of any thing, and I called the adult platoon leader to verify what might be going on. The requested time to wait for a return call is 72 hours . . . so probably Monday I will hear from his platoon leader. I would think that it is not allowed, but idiot kids will be idiots, and be sneaky about it too. |

Well I received a phone call from an adult Platoon leader this evening. At first I was a bit freaked out, but he assured me everything was fine. An angel is watching over the parent support group on FB. My Cadet is fine, the student who was bullying has left the program. I am thankful that the adult took the time out of his busy evening to call a worried mother. It definitely lightened my soul. I so want DS to succeed and thrive at OYCP. He is missing so much, his wrestling and Lacrosse seasons. It is my hope he will gain an understanding of his true self and potential despite the disabilities he faces.

I know some of the struggles you've dealt with your son and it really sounds like this is a really good and positive thing he is doing now. I pray he will be successful and be able to turn his life around!

I saw my cousin today who has spent her entire career working on FAS. She is the person that developed the list of various markers identifying FAS, as well as helped set up the programs that your son is in. I told her about the your son and how is improving. She was thrilled to hear that you sought out the help he needs, and asked me to let you know that setbacks are expected, that the staff is well trained in these setbacks, and that thru the setbacks they can really hone in on an individuals unique issues and help them cope long term.

The first opportunity for Mentors to visit OYCP was Sat. 2/18. DS17's mentor was able to go and send my a few photos. He said DS is doing great and enjoying it right now. He also seems to get along with several of the other kids that the mentor met. He thinks that there are some kids he doesn't like but mostly because they don't want to be at OYCP. DS is thinking they won't come back after break which is in 3/3-3/7.

I can hear the hope in your sentences- it sure sounds like a great opportunity for change. I helped my best friend take her 15 yr old son to a similar program. Very strict, fifteen months, and he’s due to be done THIS month but he requested to stay longer because he’s a leader now and he loves it. He’s done amazing and before he went in he was violent and out of control. The counselors are incredible and our orientation and intake day impressed me. It’s called Teen Challenge I think. Anyway, it turned his life around and he’s so thankful now for his family not giving up on him.
I feel for you! My friend was hopeful and very sad at the same time. I’m glad I was with her because leaving him there was so difficult for her.

His shoulders are broad, so the rest of the uniform looks baggy on him. We are very proud he is sticking with OYCP and making progress.
