Our Cadet came home for his first break today, and he is a different kid! We had his doctors appointment and he was honest about his prior drug use, and that he feels so much better being clean for almost 3 months now!
He came home with six ribbons one of the few of the Cadets in the company to do so! Red stage (first two weeks--full on boot camp), CPR, Food Handlers, Star Student (2nd week!), Fitness (mile under 9 minutes with 8:22), and good behavior. All Cadets have the first three, but not the last three.
We are sooooooo proud! He wanted to stay in town with his dogs and cat.
On another note, our DS23 was invited back into our home under the condition that he stay clean and be forthright with us. He has been a big help with preparing our property for the sale. Even did the adult thing and registered his car under his name with insurance card today. Took him almost 2 hours, but he did it on his own.
Right now they are re-connecting in the other room, watching a movie. They've not really spent time together in about 4.5 years. This is such a blessing.
We are hoping that it continues to be this positive, it has been such a relief. We are however vigilant . . . we've been through too much to not be!

Thank you for loving these boys enough to be willing to make the hard decisions for their good, and not be enablers.
It is a hard road to walk.
Praying they both stay on a good path.
ETA: I am sure you have already pondered this, but consider doing something different than his regular school for his senior year. The same high school might be a trigger and hinder his recovery.

When my sister was in early recovery, places where she could easily 'score' her drugs would be huge triggers, and at one point, played a factor in her relapsing. |

This is a wonderful update. I know you must be relieved and at the same time apprehensive. You are being so strong and showing these boys the tough love that they need to turn their lives toward a better future.
I have read that a recovering addict needs to completely avoid old friends and patterns that they had when actively using. The above comment about considering having your son not return to his same school falls in line with that. I would certainly seek the advice of the people at the camp to see what their experience has led them to recommend regarding giving your son his best possible shot at maintaining all the positive changes he has made.
Hang in there, Mom. I hope the worst is now behind you and that your family can grow closer than ever now. Please keep us updated when you can.

We have been since before he was accepted to OYCP, as the schools here will not help at all, and actually do not want to provide the services he deserves because they know that cannot protect him!
We became more sure after he was accepted, and when DS23 came home. See this thread.
Now to just get this home sold, went on the market a week ago.

Part of the OYCP is to do Community Service. His patrol was on duty cleaning up the parking lot at our local High Desert Museum. His FASD brain, lack of impulse control, and addiction caught up with him when he found a discarded vape pen. Then brought it back to OYCP (probably in his underwear) as they do search, and stole a charger from the office of a staff member. Shared it with another cadet. They tested negative for marijuana so likely just nicotine. So he is on level three discipline, which I am not sure what that means. He is not expelled. My heart is just broken, he was so sure he wanted to finish this program--he wasn't going to risk doing anything on break to jeopardize going back to OYCP. Now this! Prayers please for this Mama's heart!

I’m so sorry about the setback. I hope and pray he’ll get back on track. In the long run this slip up may be just what he needs to reaffirm his goals and get back on track.
I can’t imagine how anxious you must feel. Your sons are so fortunate to have such a loving and devoted mother.

I'm sorry to hear this news. Setbacks are normal.
