I’m not a spy balloon expert, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express once. So I’ll consider some opposing views. Perhaps the military was aware of this balloon long before the public. Flagrantly flying it in plain sight by China is provocative. Rather than be provoked, surely there are means in place to figure out what this balloon was collecting and transmitting and how, as well as means to stop it from collecting and transmitting anymore. Diplomatically China is now on the defensive. Perhaps it’s not worth revealing capabilities to deal with something at that high altitude right now?
And nevermind the risk of shooting something down that large over people.
Unless of course Tom Cruise wasn’t forced into retirement and perhaps Maverick can take care of it? 🤷♀️

Apparently there is a question on how high the balloon is and if our jets are capable of going as high as the balloon or even getting close enough to accurately shoot something at it.
Based on how high the balloon is reported to be at I don’t think it’s a job for either Maverick or a Ethan Hunt. I think it’s more of a job for Iron Man.

I’ve read too much Tom Clancy so I was thinking Jack Ryan Which is why they aren’t going to shoot down the exploratory run of the balloon, let the Chinese get complacent, you don’t want them to change plans, then you take action when they are going to do whatever the balloon's real function is. Jack Ryan is working furiously to figure that out and counteract it I assure you 🤣😜

Now this is funny. Now we know what Dr Fauci is doing in his retirement. Some answers to Comer's comments..... *** Referring to Comer’s unfounded bioweapons claim, one Twitter user observed, “Isn’t that more reason not to shoot at it? I’m not saying I know what to do, but logic would dictate ‘don’t shoot at balloons full of bioweapons.’ Right?” *** And yet another, wholly mocking Comer, who holds far-right anti-LGBTQ beliefs, said: “Or worse, what if it has woke trans undocumented drag queen athletes?” *** Another, mocking Comer, noted: “If they were sending a bio weapon, why would they park it over sparsely populated Montana? *rolls eyes*”

I agree with you on Jack Ryan. We have just finished season 2 of Jack Ryan earlier this week. I would also add Reacher. Jack Reacher. He could do the stuff on the ground that was needed. eta: in case the name Casey effing Ryback doesn't mean anything to you, it was Steven Seagal back in the day with the product glued back hair and the ninja style, laidback fighting. The movie that is one is his "best" he was "just a cook" on the ship.

Enough said... Keep in mind it is at 66,000 feet, bullets could go to 10,000. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called on regular citizens to shoot down the suspected Chinese spy balloon that is currently drifting across the central United States in a tweet on Friday. Literally every regular person I know is talking about how to shoot down the Chinese Spy Balloon," wrote Greene, a controversial lawmaker famous for her promotion of the QAnon conspiracy theory. "It would be great if an average Joe shot it down because China Joe won’t. Regular Americans can do everything better than the government and actually care about our country."www.rawstory.com/marjorie-taylor-greene-spy-balloon/

I hope they are smarter than her because we all know what goes up must come down. They won’t bring down the huge balloon which was the size of several busses but bullets coming back down could kill someone. It happens every new years. But hey shooting things is good. 🤦♀️

We also have NO idea what is truly inside. It could also be the final straw that starts WW3 or a new Cold War. (If we were to shoot it down) Well then by all means let’s let every foreign country fly stuff over our country and not do anything about it in case we make them mad. And you’re right we don’t know what’s inside it. It could be some biological agent and the balloon is heading toward a big city like New York to release it over the city. And if our military doesn’t have the skills to bring that balloon down in an unpopulated area with minimal damage we have even bigger problems. Not stopping Putin in Ukraine poses a bigger threat to starting WWIII then the United States shooting down a Chinese spy balloon in the middle of the United States. Especially since they know we know they have spy satellites orbiting over the United States just like they know we have spy satellites orbiting over China. Maybe lay off the spy thriller movies for a bit. The DoD knows a hell of a lot more than you do about the situation.

Maybe lay off the spy thriller movies for a bit. The DoD knows a hell of a lot more than you do about the situation. First of all I was pulling the leg of the person I was responding to. It was in response to her somewhat hysterical comment. But there is a reality that we are living in. Mark Twain made the following comment “ Truth is stranger than fiction, but it’s because fiction is obligated to stick to possibilities; truth isn’t” Who would have thought that there could actually be a terrorist attack in this country that would take down the twin towers and and fly a plane into the Pentagon? But it happened. And one of the reasons this happened was because our intelligence community failed. The signs were there and missed by the government. Who would have thought that a man who’s one claim to fame was yelling “you’re fired” on a reality TV would end up in a position in our government that has resulted in wide spread corruption and chaos? And it didn’t stay in the Federal Government but spread to other parts of the country. I mean seriously who would have thought that at this point in time this country would be banning books? I could never imagine that happening, but yet we are. I have no doubt that the DoD knows more then I do, but they did miss the signs that a group of men were planning on flying planes into some buildings. So what specifically in my little list of things do you think would only happen in a fictional spy movie? Apparently we can’t shoot the balloon down with any sort of accuracy because it seems it’s flying at a higher altitude then our jets can reach. Do you think our enemies are incapable of carrying out a biological attack in this country. Or setting off a dirty bomb somewhere in this country? The person I responded to felt shooting down that balloon could lead to WWIII. I don’t think that would happen. But what do you think will happen if Putin isn’t stopped in Ukraine? You know who’s watching very closely what is happening in Ukraine don’t you? China. Did you know the United States just signed an agreement with The Philippines to have access to 4 more bases giving the US access to I believe 6 military bases in The Philippines? Why would the United States want access to additional military bases in that part of the world? Maybe it has something to do with the actions of China in that region. So again what above do you think would only happen in a spy novel? Your comment kind of reminded me of the interviews you see on the news. You know where some tv reporter interviews a neighbor in an area where some event just happened. And the neighbor says “we didn’t think that sort of thing could happen here”. If there is one thing I have learned watching the events in this country these last years is that anything can happen anywhere at anytime and that’s the truth we are living with. Sadly.

Three airports North and South Carolina closed. AP: US considering plan to shoot balloon down over Atlantic. Are we allowed to shoot down something that is not in US airspace? Are there parts of the Atlantic that are still in our airspace? ETA - I do wonder what China is up to. It is not like they don’t have spy planes or satellites, like the US does too.

We don't know exactly what they are trying to do with this balloon. I thought I read somewhere that this isn't the first time this has happened just the first time it has been considered a big deal. We have politicians and generals loudly proclaiming that we will be at war with China in the next couple of years. That is not in anyone's best interest - well maybe a few that will make some money but it seems we should be talking vs shooting stuff down maybe - especially since it is so high and not possible to safely bring it down? Maybe this is because we have been saying we may be going to war but then of course this wasn't built in a day. Obviously they know more than the general public but if they have been doing this for a while why the sudden urgency to bring it down unless they know something or they are just listening to the far right cries of shoot it down and once we do then they will claim that we shouldn't have done so if China retaliates in some way. I think the knee jerk response may not be the wisest thing - why now if we just ignored them in the past. There are way too many questions at this point. I just keep thinking diplomacy is the way to go at this point. Not that I trust what they are saying - we know it isn't just a private weather balloon but how dangerous is it to our relationship with China to just shoot it down?
ETA I guess we do have the technology to shoot it down. I wonder what the ramifications of this will be?
