So they are just going to let it spy on the country huh. What would you suggest? Let’s blow it up and fuck everybody who happens to be on the ground underneath a piece of it? Like, you do understand the premise of this, right? If you shoot something in the sky, it falls down.

That and Pentagon/Military have stated that it is so high up that they couldn't gather much anyways. Instead of just quick quoting, the OP needs to read the articles for full understanding.

If you shoot something in the sky, it falls down. This^^ CNN said it's about the size of three school busses. That's a lot of debris to rain down on the people below. No matter how sparsely populated Montana is, that's still potentially very dangerous.

We also have NO idea what is truly inside.
It could also be the final straw that starts WW3 or a new Cold War. (If we were to shoot it down)

We also have NO idea what is truly inside. It could also be the final straw that starts WW3 or a new Cold War. (If we were to shoot it down) Well then by all means let’s let every foreign country fly stuff over our country and not do anything about it in case we make them mad. And you’re right we don’t know what’s inside it. It could be some biological agent and the balloon is heading toward a big city like New York to release it over the city. And if our military doesn’t have the skills to bring that balloon down in an unpopulated area with minimal damage we have even bigger problems. Not stopping Putin in Ukraine poses a bigger threat to starting WWIII then the United States shooting down a Chinese spy balloon in the middle of the United States. Especially since they know we know they have spy satellites orbiting over the United States just like they know we have spy satellites orbiting over China.

If you read any of the articles you would have learned that this isn't the first time this type of air craft has been in our air space.
And because they don't know what is in there, it poses a bigger risk to our persons due to debris, explosion/fire, chemicals, and again military has stated that it is too high (above where planes fly) to gather anyIntel.

I'm guessing we do our fair share of spying on China too.

For some reason you seem to be fixated on whether I read the articles or not. As far as my responses above, may I suggest you read very carefully and very slowly the comments my responses were in response to. .And maybe just maybe you will see what I was doing. Kind of like what I’m doing right now.

It’s not clear if this is a second balloon or the same one. From the Independent… link“After the US military, now Canada has confirmed spotting a high-altitude surveillance balloon and said that its movements are being actively tracked today morning. “Canadians are safe and Canada is taking steps to ensure the security of its airspace, including the monitoring of a potential second incident,” the north American nation’s national defence said in a statement.”

How do we know the balloon or balloons in question aren’t updated versions of these and that is the real reason why they haven’t shot down the one or two balloons floating around the northern border? We don’t. The only way the masses know about these balloons today is because someone managed to catch it on a video. What information we have is what the government has told us. I’m not suggesting some conspiracy theory, the right is big on that. . I’m suggesting there may be more to the story then what we are being told. For reasons we don’t know and probably won’t ever know. From 2019… From Newsweek… link” Pentagon Is Testing High Altitude Surveillance Balloons to 'Watch Everything at Once': 'It's Disturbing'”
From the article…. ”The U.S. military is testing high altitude, solar-powered balloons allowing the Pentagon to conduct continuous surveillance of a wide swath of the Midwest, according to a new report. The Guardian reported that the program is detailed in documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), showing that the military is sending the balloons flying across six states at altitudes of up to 65,000 feet. The Pentagon has thus far flown as many as 25 of the balloons, launching them from a site in South Dakota and flying them some 250 miles over Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Missouri. The balloons then land in central Illinois The FCC filing was made by an aerospace and defense company Sierra Nevada Corporation. The documents explain that the craft are designed to "provide a persistent surveillance system to locate and deter narcotic trafficking and homeland security threats." It appears the first set of flights were approved by the FCC last year, while the most recent documentation shows approval for operations running from mid-July until September. Outfitted with sophisticated radars, the balloons are able to track multiple vehicles at day and night in all weathers. The balloons—which are being flown by United States Southern Command—also carry small vehicles containing sensors and communications equipment. The loadout includes a synthetic aperture radar designed to be able to detect every single moving car or boat active in a 25-mile field beneath the balloon.“

Keep in mind the articles have said that this isn’t the first time balloons of this type have been found over the US. And the US believes they were Chinese as well. This is just the first time the public has known about them.
And of course we have Kevin McCarthy trying to act like he is a big deal.

What the heck can they see that satellites can’t?
I’d be more worried about what physical things the balloon can carry/drop/disperse etc. and if it were carrying something deadly then shooting it down would only set that in motion.
IMO they are testing what they can do and what our response could be. Maybe it’s just surveillance but really they already have many satellites for that, so why the ‘balloon’ ?
Our military needs to step up surveillance before a ‘balloon’ reaches our airspace. Balloons are semi predictable in their movements & should be stopped before they are over us. Else there won’t need to be a war they just disperse some lethal crap over us at will.
I’ve read too many dystopian novels so that where my mind goes 😂

From AP…
”The abrupt decision came despite China’s claim that the balloon was a weather research satellite that had blown off course. The U.S. has described it as a surveillance satellite.
The decision came just hours before Blinken had been due to depart Washington for Beijing and marked a new blow to already strained U.S.-Chinese relations. The official said Blinken and President Joe Biden determined it was best not to proceed with the trip at this time.”
