Ok, we're taking a trip this Summer and I want to do something different for the travel journal.
This will not be a road trip so I can't take a lot of stuff, like maybe just a pouch with glue stick, a roll of double sided tape, and scissors. Maybe some stickers, just not a lot.
In the past I have made books with rings and I don't like them. They are getting ruined/falling apart.
When we go on longer road trips, I use Simple Stories albums with lots of pocket pages and I scrap as I go (bring a small bin of supplies). I put little notes in the pockets about which picture will go where. I organize all the photos into albums on my phone so all I have to do when we get home is print, cut, and pop into pockets. I save lots of ephemera in there. I love them. They are so much fun.
I do not want to save all the stuff and make a similar journal when I get home. I like taking a few minutes each day to play around and I will have some time on this trip. I don't want to carry a 6X8 album with me. No space.
I'll have too much stuff for a TN.
Any other options I am not thinking of?
I could always get a citrus twist 4X8 and bring a few page protectors with me. Leave the album at home but still play around.
Would love some ideas, even links to some projects.

You could do PL App pages and print a book when you are done.
I don't do well scrapping on vacations no matter how simple. I'm lucky if I can get something written down each day. I've been using the Day One App to gather my journaling and that works really well for me.

I've been using the Day One App to gather my journaling and that works really well for me. I think this is what I would do. You can make it as big or small as you want and then print it later. You can always print out the pages + add any memorabilia to the album later.

If a TN is too small, you don't want to be lugging an album around and you're not open to using rings - I would suggest using a larger notebook where you can stamp, write, stick things in. Effectively creating TN/scrapbook layouts in a notebook. Two instagrammers spring to mind for inspo of how this format can work: nancydamiano and retrohipmama. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm4Vf_vu-EX I'm unable to embed any of retrohipmama's posts for some reason but she has lots of posts with a notebook format.

Can you give me some more info on what you mean by this? I am intrigued. Two instagrammers spring to mind for inspo of how this format can work: nancydamiano and retrohipmama Thank you! I follow nancy (loved her since the og 2 peas!). But I'm not sure I follow the other. Will check them out. I don't think I'm going to want to do anything digital. I'm on the computer for work all day so when we go out of town, I don't even want to think about computers. I like the idea of bringing some pocket pages and do stuff as always with a much smaller kit, lots of sticky notes, and no album. I could buy a citrus twist on and just chuck everything in when we return. I think that could work. Would love to hear more suggestions! Any tips at all for travel ideas are totally welcome. I used to always buy the perfect notebook that I would spend hours trying to find. Then bring tape and a glue stick and put postcards and receipts in there, keep lists of how much we spent, all that. But I never did any of the actual scrapbooking stuff like stickers and embellishments. I never thought to go back to that. Could be fun.

FWIW I do all my digital scrapping on my phone. But I get not wanting to be on it.
The most successful travel album I have done is when I did heavy planning before the trip. I picked a kit, figured out my structure for each day, selected pocket pages/sketches for each page, journal prompts and decided what kind of photos I'd need for each day to fill out my LOs. I typed up notes and sketches, made lists of photos and journal prompts for each day, etc.
While on vacation I'd make notes either in my print outs (two 8.5x11 papers) or in the Day One App to make sure I had everything I needed and to document the details.
When I got home I was able to quickly order photos and put together my pages since everything was already figured out.
That's was the first time I used the Day One App for vacation notes. Moving forward I think I will set up a template in the app for each day to give my notes a little more structure.
For the above vacation (a week camping in Yosemite) I used a WITL kit which also provided some structure.

Can you give me some more info on what you mean by this? I am intrigued? The journals are slim, meaning >> very thin, 10 pages, not bulky. So they would be easy to carry with you, in a tote bag. Blank pages, so you can journal and add embellishments (journal cards, stickers, etc....) www.acherryontop.com/shop/search/travel+journal/sort/relevance

Not a quick answer, for I spend every year thinking "how will I do this Travel journal?" As a result I've got a Pinterest page of them! Travel Journals
My favourite one is based on something similar to a Midori pocket (maybe called kangaroo?) book, where each page has a folded pocket in it for ephemera. There's still room to write/stick/draw but it comes together surprisingly quickly. Someone's blog post (not mine) is on my Pinterest page too, but here's the link
Oh and as you can imagine, I've blogged time and again about the process of choosing a format. There's a few links here (with one or two Christmas journals in there as well!) Hope that helps? (If not for your travel journal, perhaps a remedy for insomnia ;-) )

blemon you're too kind! Here's the Midori Kangaroo which is great, but I have probs with Midori paper, which is too thin for my needs. That's why I made my own by folding up a pocket on each page before binding in my cinch. I shall look forward to seeing what you decide and hope you are more decisive than I am when it comes to such things ;-)

It worked well for me in 2022 and I think I'll continue in 2023 to do it. The journal is gorgeous. And I've been wanting a little printer to carry around for trips when I'll have some down time. Are you happy with the quality?

The photos are sticky back so it works really well in my little journal.

I’m really sorry I don’t have a flip through of this but I recently did an everyday explorers mini book. It was simple to do and I love the way it came out. It doesn’t fit a lot but I could see the format really working on the go. I did the entire thing in 2 days of minimal effort. http://instagram.com/p/CpyEY1yuKys

Good to see this thread coming to life again and blemon it will be great to see the end result (hah! no pressure !! ) I am now prepping my travel journal for our up coming Road Trip to North Dakota! (Saving the best till last ;-) ) I've been struggling to find a collection of "stuff" - pages, colour palette, elements etc for an overall design and yet again, wonder why all travel scrapbook collections seem to require the same phrases ("I haven't been everywhere but it's on my list" - ugh) and some image of the Eiffel Tower or Big Ben, neither of which is particularly relevant to North Dakota. (And does *every* road trip have to include route 66?) So I decided to get a digital collection, print out what I need, cut out on my Silhouette and keep a folder for when I get back and might want to use the digital files. Today Traci Reed is releasing a new collection which might fit the bill - have only seen a preview so far so can't say for certain, but right now am thinking that it might have the right bright and breezy tone for our trip. The beauty of a digital collection is that I can adjust colours if I want to work with a less "primary" and more wood/plains-y palette. Thanks to everyone who's contributed great links above and to blemon for kickstarting the conversation which has given me plenty of ideas to consider too!

everyday explorers mini book I LOVE this. Thanks for sharing. So I decided to get a digital collection, print out what I need, cut out on my Silhouette and keep a folder for when I get back and might want to use the digital files. What collection did you get? Or are you waiting on Traci Reed? I think this is a great idea. it will be great to see the end result We haven't left yet (ha ha) but I do have a plan. I bought an orange/clementine (? don't remember) TN sized album from Citrus Twist and it's gorgeous. That is the color of the Netherlands, where we're going (not the flag but their color (maybe because of sports? I'll need to look it up). I'm going to bring a kit of stuff so I can play while we're there. I'm going 2 weeks before my family arrives so I'll have plenty of time in the evenings to play around a bit. I decided to just print photos when I get home. I did that for my short Disney trip and it worked really well to do them in batches. The only problem was that the sticky notes were really sticky and left some tack behind when I took them up. Since I'll mostly be using pocket pages, I'm just going to use scrap paper and tuck in pockets for notes. I'll bring a role of washi to use for anything else. I am excited to go through all my stash and pull out papers to use and stickers and stuff. I'll bring it all with me in a zipper pouch. Now that Summer is here, I'm hoping to see what other people are doing!

I'm so happy this post popped up today! Thank you blemon and to all who provided links to travel journaling ideas! I have not been great about journaling my travels, but I am determined to get better! The most I've done is journal daily in my Notes app on my phone and start each day taking a photo of either my itinerary or some sign of where I am (or going) that day. Here's a great Archer & Olive video I ran across last night. And now...off to merrily go down the Pinterest rabbit hole, starting with the link to elegantsufficiency's board!

blemon I am holding fire on the Voyage collection from The Lilypad the-lilypad.com/store/Voyage.html which is also discounted this weekend, because perhaps I'll like Traci's Weekender better (and she says that it will fit nicely with her other travel collections too) I'm thinking I'll print a few pages out ready to go, will include some with pockets for the inevitable ephemera but will be sure to leave lots of space for the notes I'll keep whilst on the go. Our Road Trip friend came over last week and we spent a few hours looking through old journals and reliving the moments - so many things we'd forgotten about but which came flooding back when we saw the pages. I just have to do this! Traci's collection goes live later this evening for us - maybe too late and I'll wait till the morning to decide. Having said that, we have quite big event to watch tomorrow (!) and I can't imagine I'll spend much time at my desk. Still, the other great thing about digital collections is that they don't sell out!! Now, about Orange and the Netherlands - it all comes from King William, whose family came from an area in France called Orange. Since then, the Dutch have identified with the colour and I understand that's also the reason why we have orange carrots! (I believe they were originally purple....) What takes you to the Netherlands? Sounds like you are going to have plenty of time to have fun!!

Here is a Pinterest board I started years ago: There is some good stuff in there I had forgotten about! And I found two travel journals I documented and put on Pinterest too. I forgot about them. Here is one from a trip we took 10 years ago. I did most of this while we were there, with a small kit of stuff I had brought. We only used Instax photos. Took more with a digital camera or my phone. Who knows. Not even sure where they are so I'm glad we at least have these: And a mini trip to NYC (we are within driving distance so take long weekends once every year and a half or so):

Thanks blemon - now following you (which always feels a bit like stalking, but I can assure you it's not!) I agree about how much more accessible having photos in a journal is than just stored on a phone. I love having the pics in context as well - with a map, maybe, or other stuff alongside them as in your two lovely examples above. I found another couple of possibilities for digital collections, both already in my stash. Firstly, for this trip Elf Sahin's Travelogue, particularly because one of the phrases is "in the middle of nowhere"...very apt for N Dakota I thought ;-) I had also forgotten about Lyn Grieveson's Mapped, which I love but might keep for the next trip on our schedule, which is Scandinavia, Iceland and Greenland. Seems more appropriate for that. Oh heck. Too. Much. Choice.

your two lovely examples above. Thank you! It was fun looking through the pictures. I used to use a LOT of ephemera. I'm not sure that I do so much anymore but I need to get back at that. And I will check out those digital collections. Your next trip sound amazing.

So, I succumbed to quite a bit, encouraged by the 40% discounts for INSD (or whatever it's called!) I bought a bit of Traci Reed's Weekender www.tracireed.com/journal/weekender , especially the Road Trip add on. I hummed and haawed about whether to buy the "printable" or the "digital" but the Silhouette files persuaded me in the end towards the printable, because I thought I could at least use those as digital files anyway. I also shopped at the Lilypad and got some of Voyage the-lilypad.com/store/Voyage-Collection.html (liked the palette) and some of Wanderlust the-lilypad.com/store/Wanderlust-aCollection.html , both by Anita - thinking that a $6 spend wasn't going to break the bank anyway. Then, in a slightly mad minute, I got This is the place the-lilypad.com/store/This-is-the-Place-Mixed-Media-Artistry.html - very different but more like the kind of thing I do when I create my own art rather than use my PC. Anyway, my Travel folder is "comfortably stuffed" now, has plenty of fresh material on which to base my next journal and I have no excuses for not getting on with it. Well, actually, I do. We're about to "welcome" builders into our home to begin a fairly major project and have to empty several rooms before they do. They just announced they'll begin on 15 May. A week. Eeeek! They promise to do the noisy, dirty work whilst we are in N Dakota...but there's a couple of weeks before we set off to "enjoy" first. I might take refuge in my studio...or want nothing more than to lie down in a darkened room. We will see.

Link to a very informative travel journal Beginner's Guide video. I'm determined to start keeping a journal of our travels. I always create Mixbook photo books afterwards and I scrap just one double-page layout of my favorite photos to go in our travel scrapbook, but I never know what to do with all the ephemera I collect during our trips. Prepping for our July trip to Alaska, I have a small box I'm using to collect items for my journal kit. So far I've added: my Instax printer and extra film, a traveler's notebook, small Cutter Bee scissors, clear stamps and a stamp block, 6" ruler, pencil board, 49 & Market Travel Anywhere rub-on transfers (they're gorgeous!), assorted stickers and die cuts, double-sided tape, and washi tape (I've cut off various lengths and wound them onto business-card-size pieces of sturdy plastic). I still need to add an ink pad, journaling pens, a glue stick, a few colored pencils, a Mildliner, and whatever else I can think of in the next few months. I'm trying to keep everything in one medium pouch, so I really need to think about what I'm taking. I also need to go through my stamps and pare them down. I don't want to take more than 2 4x6 stamps, so I may have to pull from different sets and create my own personalized stamp sheets.

I'm trying to keep everything in one medium pouch, so I really need to think about what I'm taking. Deciding what to take (and what to leave behind) is always tricky though less so when we are heading to the US because I know I can get whatever I need when we pass the first Michaels/Joanns. Actually that was also true when we started a trip in India and walked down a street in Mumbai, where I hoped to find a glue stick and a hole punch. Not only did I find a chap sitting in a hole in the wall selling both (he had an amazing selection of office stuff) when I asked about the hole punch I was asked "What size?" I usually choose a colour palette and stick quite hard to it, so take just one or maybe two of the small cube type ink pads and a couple of coloured pens. I don't usually bring stamps along beyond a generic star or swirl, something that ends up more of a bullet point as I progress through my journal rather than anything more. I have one of the plastic school pencil boxes and, if it doesn't fit in there, then it can't come with me! I also use your washi tape trick, sometimes winding it onto pencils, but find that I seldom use the stickers and die cuts until I'm home again. And though I very rarely use them, I still feel the need to take the tiniest box of watercolour paints, because in my fantasy holiday world, I'm sitting creating a watercolour in an idyllic setting. It's only ever happened once, but hey, who knows?! (And a girl can dream!) Thanks for sharing the link to the video, which I'll take a look at later. I'm always open to new ideas and fresh approaches!! After all, we can't have this year's travel journal looking like all the others, can we?!

small Cutter Bee scissors, If you don't plan on checking a bag, I would recommend buying some scissors that have a round tip. I once had a brand new pair of cutter bees confiscated through security because I had forgotten they were in my crafty pouch in my carryon. my Instax printer and extra film How do you feel this prints? Is it better than the photos look? I'd love to buy a small printer but I'm just so on the fence about them. I've been making notes in my pages then batch printing when I get home. Also, thanks for the video! Otherwise your kit sounds a lot like mine. I don't bring stamps but I sometimes bring a date stamp and one small ink pad. I just love date roller stamps. And though I very rarely use them, I still feel the need to take the tiniest box of watercolour paints, because in my fantasy holiday world, I'm sitting creating a watercolour in an idyllic setting. It's only ever happened once, but hey, who knows?! (And a girl can dream!) I'm so with you! I just love the idea of this but it has never happened. But I also do the color palette thing and stick to it. It really helps me limit what I take with me. And same on the embellishments. I rarely use them until I get home and am finishing up but I love flipping through them. Love all of this talk about supplies. Gets me excited! I'm going to finish up WITL next week then start putting together my kit for my trip to the Netherlands.

Thanks, elegantsufficiency, I like your idea of choosing a color palette beforehand. I'm going to work on that! I'm also very tempted to take a small set of watercolors, but I keep telling myself I know I won't use them. They just look so pretty on other people's pages! I think what I'm going to do about my clear stamp dilemma is to stamp them on clear sticker sheets instead of taking the whole stamp set.
