our library is small town library and doesn't have a huge budget. As a result many of the books talked about here are either a very long wait or just not available.
I found out today that the Las Vegas Public library has FREE ecards for residents and visitors. We are planning a trip there soon so I signed up and WHEEE, they have ALL the books I want. 12 week wait but they have them.
So check other libraries - you may find one you can use other than your own

We have had a library card for the library system of the next county over for year. I use their on-line system far more than our county because it has so much more available. I also live in a small town.

It’s the same here, I can join any library in my state, and have done, so I can access all their digital libraries. I joined most of them during Covid lockdowns and it’s been really good when a book I’ve wanted has a long wait at one library but is available now at another.

I have library cards for the two largest counties near me as our county doesn’t do many ebooks at all. It’s a life saver.

I don't have a tiny library, but I have looked into getting a card in my next closest large county (we already pay income taxes there... don't get me started)and it was $180 a year. I'll just stick to my local library and deal with long waits!

I looked at other local libraries near me - they are already part of our "network" so I can't join them. There are a couple libraries in the next county but they charge a fee to join if you are a non-resident. I'm kind of hyped that I could join Las Vegas. I just added 11 books to my holds.

Yes, here in Northern Virginia there's a whole reciprocal borrowing thing.... Many of the Northern VA counties, Washington DC, and several in Maryland. I have ecards from most of them. lol

The New York City library has free out-of-state digital library cards. You can borrow on-line books. I think they did this initially in response to book bannings.

I've done actual books >> inter-Library loan. It's takes 2-4 weeks for a book to arrive. If I am reading an actual book, I get the large print so it's a nice option to have.
I know about the ebook inter-Library loan. Plan on doing it one if these days. There is a series I want to read and my Library doen't have it in large print or ebook. It's nice to be able to borrow from another Library. I just need to figure out which Library has the ebook series, and get signed up.

Thanks for the info - I signed up for a card! I've downloaded the Axis 360 app to use with their audiobooks, but I need to set up another Hoopla account for them. I like Hoopla - no waiting if they have the book in their system!

I'll just stick to my local library and deal with long waits! This is one of my pet peeves. The city library (a Carnegie library originally) in the adjacent county also charges a fee for out of county residents. The county library does not. The city is happy to benefit from the sales tax collected on all the things we buy there.

Colorado allows people to get a virtual card at any library in the state.

Wow, I am impressed with the easy access so many have to great free libraries. You are all so lucky.

Yes, I have recommended that people join more than one library so they have access to more e-books. I'm glad our libraries will let you *freeze* a hold once you get first in line just in case you won't have time to read it right away.
ETA: None of our libraries charge a fee to join.

I use my ipad (mini) and use the Libby app for all the libraries that use it. I have other apps, my local library is on Borrow Box, and I've used Cloud Library and Axis 360 to access others. I like Libby because it holds all my libraries together and before placing a hold I can easily review all my other connected libraries to see if they have a shorter wait/book available now.

Omg... So even with our great reciprocal system here in the DC area I could not find the ebook version of the latest in the Phryne Fisher series... I love this series and I was forced to take out the regular-font version from my library. I've been struggling to read it because the font is too small. I'm SO nearsighted that I can read up close if I take my glasses off, but that's only really good for small things... medicine doses, or recipe amounts, stuff like that. Reading a book without my glasses though gives me a headache very quickly. Anyway, couldn't find the ebook of this latest Phryne Fisher. So just now I went to the Las Vegas library page, signed up for a card, and THEY HAVE THE BOOK! omg I just downloaded it, and since I'm not working today I know what I'll be doing as soon as I get back from Costco. Thanks VERY MUCH for posting!

When it asked for my branch I just picked "Clark County". They sent me the card number and PIN in an email, and I had to reply back to confirm my email. Done. Las Vegas Library

It is a great system and sometimes the wait is minimal for hard cover books and audio books have virtually no wait time. DH and I use iPad or iPhone to read what we borrow.

I have 6 different library cards. Many libraries in Texas will give cards to anyone with Texas drivers license. I’m currently reading the latest Jojo Moyes novel that was just released last week from one of my libraries.
