I'd like to add Stephen King and Rita Moreno. Rita Moreno starred in the original West Side Story movie, and then was in the reboot 60 years later and stole the show!

Not many (US only) but the only two I can really think that reaches that status is Betty White and Dolly There are others listed above and I feel like they are beloved but national treasure level, not quite. But that is just me. Ditto. Very few make the cut for me too. Dick Van Dyke is the other. Everyone else is beloved, but that status is special

Dolly Parton, Ryan Reynolds, Dione Warwick, The Obamas, Dick Van Dyke, Carol Burnett
Ryan might be on the young side, but he doesn't seem to ever get negative press. I don't pay that much attention either. I love his sense of humor. When Dione Warwick discovered Twitter, I was late to the game on that one. RIP Leslie Jordan, Betty White. Chris Meloni, well because it's my list!

The posed question infers U.S. treasure. To define; Must have consistently performed or produced over a significant period, works of superior and distinctive quality. must possess a mastery of tools and materials needed by the art, and must have an established reputation in the art as master and maker of works of extraordinary technical quality. My nominee would be Bill Gates. My boyhood hero, Gene Autry is the only star with 5 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Tiger Woods has excelled in his craft, and gives back to those in need. Then of course there is me.

Regarding Leslie Jordan- did you see the Property Brothers Celebrity IOU show with him? He was charming and delightful, just like I hoped he would be.

Related to this topic, here in Denmark the media has a discussion going on.
A tv-journalist has a consept “my last word” he interviews people long before they pass away, just him, the person and the camera.
The files are stored at the national library till the person is passed, and then it i shown at tv.
It is a secret who, and how many he has interviewed.
Up to now we have seen a singer, a musicwriter, a foreignminister, a politician and former minister, and latest, a female journalist with great influence at the political scene, especially for womens rights in the 60-70ths but she was also a writer of tv shows, one of them rather important.
Last week a singer passed away (had been sick for a while) and now the media makes stories about why wasn’t he interviewed.
And that lead to a big discussion “who is worthy for this show” - the journalist is quiet about his criteria.
And as one actor said, “if he ask me, am I to be flattered or angry that he think I am that old”

Some of these choices have me scratching my head. At the minimum these people should be..IDK criminal record free and free from scandal.
I sure hope the term "National Treasure" doesn't get diluted and watered down so much that it effectively loses its meaning.
Like describing EVERYONE as a genius. Oh and AMAAAZING. Like, literally. Those words are practically worthless now.
IMO, the term National Treasure should be a very rarified honor bestowed on a very very very short list.

Meaning, you and many others will feel personally affected (despite likely never meeting them) when they are ill or when they pass. I've visited this page a few times, but based on the OP, really can't think of anyone. I'd don't know, maybe I just don't form the connection with strangers that others do - but I wouldn't be personally affected if any of these people died - and honestly am pretty surprised at many of the mentions. Now based on long meaningful lives that made meaningful contributions - sure there are a handful of people and as mentioned above I do think President Carter would fit the bill, but I won't be personally affected when he dies.

Gosh, there are very few entertainers that I would put on a National Treasures list. To me, a National Treasure is someone who would leave to world a poorer place if they weren’t here. Some entertainers for sure, but not many as far as I’m concerned.
One New Zealander, who is probably unknown in other countries but who I would have on our list, is Sir John Kirwan. He used to be an All Black (member of our national rugby team) and probably every NZer knew of him, whether they followed rugby or not.
Since quitting rugby he has devoted his life to bettering the lives of people with depression. He has talked a lot about his own mental illness with no holds barred, and has set up some marvellous, very practical, resources that people can use.
This big tough rugby man who has spent the last 15 years talking about his own depression, how he overcame it, that it is nothing to be ashamed of, that there is a way forward, has done more for mental illness than anyone else I could think of.

Ryan Reynolds will forever be a favorite human of mine. A local high school girl was dying of cancer and she loved Deadpool. He was so kind and did a voice over of a video her friends/family made for her and then made the most heartfelt video for her. It was amazing and meant so much to her and her family.

Kind of like a living obituary in some ways. We had Barbara Walters here in U.S., who did some thoughtful and very personal interviews, often asking pointed questions and getting interesting, truthful answers.

Not too many celebrities. I thought Patrick Swayze was pretty much a treasure. I will say Elizabeth Taylor, Clark Gable, Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, James Earl Jones come to mind.
Politicans Barack Obama is a National Treasure as were/are people like John McCain, Bernie Sanders, John Lewis, John Glenn, Mark Kelly, John and Robert Kennedy
Others for me are Neil Armstrong, Martin Luther King, Neil Degrass Tyson, Mr Rogers, Carl Sagan and Walter Cronkite.
My list of women is Eleanor Roosevelt, Michelle Obama, and Betty White for sure.

Hence my eventual Snoop nomination. He's just fun, like Betty White and Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson.
