Meaning, you and many others will feel personally affected (despite likely never meeting them) when they are ill or when they pass.
In U.S., many of us were shocked when Tom Hanks became an early victim of covid. He's beloved by many. Today I was wondering whether Ted Danson has achieved that status in our minds. For me, musicians rank high on my list: James Taylor, Elton John, and even younger singers like Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga. How about you?

Not many (US only) but the only two I can really think that reaches that status is
Betty White and Dolly
There are others listed above and I feel like they are beloved but national treasure level, not quite. But that is just me.

I don't know if this counts but when I found out that Richard Belzer just died I was so so upset. I loved the character he played on L&O (Detective Munch). He was a favorite. I am worried about Stevie Nicks. She is touring this summer. Christine McVie recently died. Stevie is getting up there.

i think longevity elevates people to national treasure status. right now, Jimmy Carter is my national treasure. i wish so much he could go to 100 but he is being called home so i understand. hopefully he will hold the record for longest living president for a long time.

Dolly and the late Betty White are "national treasure" status to me.
ETA I think we better throw Willie Nelson in there, and eventually Snoop for sure both with and without Martha. I don't think one becomes a national treasure without reaching an advanced age. Sidney Poitier was a treasure too.
