Regarding Leslie Jordan- did you see the Property Brothers Celebrity IOU show with him? He was charming and delightful, just like I hoped he would be. No! I'll have to find it!

Meaning, you and many others will feel personally affected (despite likely never meeting them) when they are ill or when they pass. Using just this as the definition of "national treasure" -- along with "made significant contributions to society in some way" -- and not really thinking about it too much in-depth, my list would be: -- Martin Luther King -- John Lewis -- Fred Rogers -- the Obamas -- Lucy Arnez -- Betty White -- Dolly Parton -- Aretha Franklin -- Jimmy Carter (edited to add Jimmy Carter, before I read the thread, lol) Probably more if I sit down and think about it. I also didn't read through this thread yet. Now I'm going to go read it to see how many other people mentioned the same people I did, plus to see who I forgot. lol --

Some of these choices have me scratching my head. At the minimum these people should be..IDK criminal record free and free from scandal. I sure hope the term "National Treasure" doesn't get diluted and watered down so much that it effectively loses its meaning. Like describing EVERYONE as a genius. Oh and AMAAAZING. Like, literally. Those words are practically worthless now. IMO, the term National Treasure should be a very rarified honor bestowed on a very very very short list. <sips coffee, hit send> My criteria is more like, everyone loves them and they've been notable in their field. Hence my eventual Snoop nomination. He's just fun, like Betty White and Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson. man, I forgot Dolly and Willie. They are definitely on my list

I agree with a lot of the people listed. I didn't include people who are pretty young and barring a fluke, probably safe for at least 10 more years. Had to have a cutoff somewhere, but I didn't regard nationality here.
The ones who came to my mind from the present or relatively recently deceased:
President Carter (who has been my hero since 1993, when he spoke at my graduation) Julia Child Willie Nelson Dolly Parton Maggie Smith (I think maybe because she reminds me of my grandmother somehow) Queen Elizabeth II Madeleine L'Engle Madeleine Albright

Bob Hope - We were just in Palm Springs on vacation with my adult children and their spouses. I had to give them a brief lesson/history of Bob Hope and all he did for the troops, etc.

Willy. Definitely Willy. He may not exactly be a national treasure but he is most definitely an icon. Willie is a Texas national treasure. 😂

Meaning, you and many others will feel personally affected (despite likely never meeting them) when they are ill or when they pass. I feel sadness when people like this pass, but "personally affected?" Generally, no. I grieve for loved ones - family and friends - who die. I feel sadness for strangers. I do struggle to accept senseless deaths but that's part of the reason I'm no longer religious at all. If it's part of any god's "plan," then fuck that.

Canadian here. We lost one of ours yesterday - Gordon Pinsent. Awesome man! I was lucky to spend an afternoon with him a few years ago, swapping stories about our home province.

Have you watched 'Butterfly in the Sky"? If not, do. It is about Burton and Reading Rainbow I Have not seen it. Thanks for the recommendation! I screened it last year for local film fest. It was the first film they showed on the first full day. It was sponsored by the local library and I believe they used it in educational programing.
