For those who can't see the Tweet:
During a committee hearing on a bill to bring back the electric chair and firing squads, Rep. Paul Sherrell (R-TN) says they should also bring back lynching.
"Thank you Chairman, and ah thank you Representative Powers for bringing this, I think it's a very good idea, and I was just wondering about, could I put amendment on that it would include hanging by a tree also. And ah also I would like to sign on to your bill sir."
(Not sure if I transposed that accurately, his good ol' boy accent was a bit thick.)
Seriously, what is wrong with these people?

Oh, but now he's apologising. Of course. “I regret that I used very poor judgment in voicing my support of a colleague’s bill in the Criminal Justice Committee on Tuesday. My exaggerated comments were intended to convey my belief that for the cruelest and most heinous crimes, a just society requires the death penalty in kind. Although a victim’s family cannot be restored when an execution is carried out, a lesser punishment undermines the value we place on protecting life. My intention was to express my support of families who often wait decades for justice. I sincerely apologize to anyone who may have been hurt or offended.” |

Hanging by tree has a very specific intent.
(Not that saying gallows would be better)
Does he forget that Jan 6 they called for public hanging of our sitting Vice President at the time, a member of their own political party?!?!

Not that this guy isn’t despicable. But Brian Tyler Cohen made several mistakes in his reporting of this incident, and honestly, I would have expected better of him.
#1 this is not a U.S. Congressman. From BTC’s description, it sounds like he is. But actually he’s a Tennessee state representative. This exchange took place in the Tennessee House, not the U.S. House.
#2 he did not use the term “lynching.” BTC is the one who brought in that word. It doesn’t mean “hanging from a tree,” although that’s actually how many lynchings were/are accomplished. It means an extra-legal murder, not imposed by the government. Again, BTC ought to know better.
Now, was the implication to bring lynching to mind? Of course. But real journalists should do better.

States are having difficulty getting their hands on the drugs used in lethal injection executions. They've had to switch a number of times, because, eg, the drug manufacturers won't sell their drugs for the purpose of killing people. It is also difficult to get qualified personnel to administer the drugs. And there have been a number of botched executions involving lethal injection. To be clear, I'm explaining, not defending. This is absolutely grotesque, all of it, and cheapens us as a country. |

I don’t agree with this man, but headlines like this thread title are just patently false and don’t do anything to help actual political discourse. They are just fuel to the argument that there’s untruth and sensationalism on both sides.

I absolutely agree with you that he purposely invoked that imagery and that he did so with ill intent. I just still believe that you have to report the entire context of the debate. And that executing (regardless of method) someone who is on death row, which means they have been lawfully convicted of a crime and gone through the requisite appeals, will never be the same as lynching. |

And I want to know, Paul Sherrell, what trees would you like them to use? Are you proposing that we plant special trees in the prison grounds to use for these hangings? Or should we take the prisoners out to the local park, and hang them from one of the trees there, so that the public can come and enjoy them too?
