I use A/C whenever I am in the car just about. I have a couple of friends (one in particular) who won't use A/C when it is hot in the summer when I am driving with her or by herself because she believes (according to her father) that if you use A/C too much it burns out and you can never fix it again. Is this true? I hate riding in her vehicle because she smokes when I am in it with her so I always take mine, but just once it would be nice for her to drive and not have to suffocate (I hate having car windows open. The sound makes me want to claw someone).
I have another friend who never puts on the fan to clear the windshield or A/C in summer or anything. Even on the hottest days of the year so I always drive. (She isn't a great driver either so I am happy to drive. She also needs new glasses and won't got get some. I am not her mother so I can't make her go get new glasses-duh, but not being able to see properly kind of worries me. This is why it makes me think she is not a great driver. If she saw properly she would probably drive a lot better. Just what I think. I don't know this for a fact by any means, and I don't mind driving her as it's a safety issue. I am just judging her. She is a really really good friend, but she does need new glasses.

car airconditioners can be fixed. It can be expensive to fix one. but it can be fixed. Honestly, I think your so called friends have figured out how to manipulate you to burn your gas, put wear on your car and save themselves some cash. They aren't putting miles on their tires or miles on their odometer that raises insurance rates and all that hidden stuff.

Well I *always* believed you could fix it. Honestly I think she is just too cheap to pay for the gas for it, so I want to call her on it.
That said, exDH and I had a Cresta (Cressida) and we had 2 settings on our A/C Low and High. And the low went out and the low setting couldn't be fixed. We tried so we always had it on high. That was ok by me as Japanese summers are hotter than he!!

Depending on what the problem is the Low **setting*** couldn't be fixed without doing a very expensive job that your ex didn't feel was worth it as long as the high setting was working.

That could have been true, too. This was an older car. The year in question was 1994. I have never, ever, ever driven in a car where the A/C had gone out. We generally own our vehicles for 10 years. Never had to replace or service it ever.
Again could be exDH didn't want to fix it.

We spent $700 last year to completely replace the AC in our 11 year-old Kia. It's expensive (ours was on the cheap side because we bought our own parts), but absolutely doable.

My mom's air conditioning went out in her last car and instead of fixing it she went got a new car. She was in the market anyway, this just forced her to take the plunge.
The guys at the dealership told her to make sure to turn off the AC before turning the car off. I guess it helps that it doesn't turn on when the car does.

When the air isn't as cold as it should be, it's possible it needs a shot of freon. That's what happened to me. It wasn't that expensive.

I don't think they use freon as the cooling agent (or whatever its technical name is) in cars anymore, but yes, I've had that happen, too, where that chemical becomes depleted.
