If you knew 450 other people were giving to the same person for something they needed? And it was definitely for a worthwhile reason.
I love stories of the good that can be done when people come together and give what would be an “easy” amount for one person to give, but would collectively be a miracle for someone to receive.
Or would $10 to a stranger never be something you would consider?
(and what are the chances 450 people reply with a hypothetical yes?!)

Yes. I have donated to gofundme for strangers. Usually after reading a news story and knowing it's legit. I've also donated a few times via gofundme to a young aspiring ballerina for training after following her on IG.

I would and I have. $10 is small peanuts to me and can make a big difference to someone else. When I see a worthy cause or someone who is struggling, I give.

Maybe. It would depend on the worthwhile reason tbh. My friend fosters kittens and someone very kindly donated $1500 to help pay for neuter/spay surgery through gofundme, we were both blown away by the generosity of a stranger.

I would & I have. But I also have not. It depends on a lot of things. Why. How is the info presented? Can I give/use cash ( sort of much more likely for me than go fund me) Do my spider senses go off? Where am I in my cash flow can I give it now/today
It depends.
If your begging on the streets- I rarely give cash - too easy to be drug money but if your outside a donut shop or a deli and ask me for a donut or sandwich - absolutely I have. Several times. I’ve paid for groceries I’ve given grocery gc. I’ve paid for gas.
Easiest way for me to walk by without a response, press my I don’t give a fuck button - start yammering on about god or religion or I’m going to hell. I’m out. If I see you yelling at other people who didn’t give money- I’m not giving you money.

For dogs or cats - absolutely. I have and I do. For people? I’ll give to disaster/catastrophe relief. For individual needs and endeavors? Probably not. I have found that those causes frequently have multiple sources and ways of generating funds/such as go fund me’s, walkathons, readathon’s, church support for missions, etc. The people I know always reach their goals and more through those endeavors. I also believe that charity begins at home. I give and give generously to my family and friends. My number one cause after that are always for animals.

It really depends. We have donated money to strangers in the past when we have been able to determine it’s a legit ask. But so often people are just out to scam anyone gullible enough to hand over their hard earned money and that’s a tale as old as time. The phrase “a sucker is born every minute” didn’t happen by accident. I would much rather donate money through a certifiable organization that helps people vs. a one off go fund me or something similar.
I personally know people who raised funds for a family member’s medical bills. Then in the end when a good portion of the money wasn’t needed ($$$$$!), they just put the rest in the bank and used it for general spending (some of which was pretty frivolous) and I don’t think that was ever the intention of the many people who donated. I personally think that if funds are raised like that for a specific purpose, if any of the money isn’t actually needed for that purpose it should be paid forward, but that’s just me.

I have given more than that in person and have never thought twice about it. I was at the bank and overheard this lady trying to cash a check in her husband's name so she could by groceries. She was not on the account so was not able to cash it. Her local bank had closed. They knew her and her husband and "bent the rules" so she could do banking for him. She was of the age where when she was younger she would not have been allowed on the account. I had just come into extra money and when she walked out I went up to her, handed her the bill and said I hope it helps a little and quickly walked away.
I am hesitant in go fund me because I would want to know the full story and know it was not a scam. It would depend upon how I found out about the need. I would not need to know the person needing money, but would need to trust who sent me there. Hope that makes sense.

Yes. I paid a month’s rent for someone who I knew only through an online forum.

I do. Lately, it’s been to street vendors who have been beaten/robbed. Or a local tragic car accident where funeral money is needed. Sometimes it’s just $5 and sometimes $10.

If it was for a worthy cause and would make a positive difference in someone's life then I would w/o hesitation. For me it's only $10, but for that person it could mean something much more.

I will use goFundme occassionally to donate to local things- often patients at my work or that we know in medical crisis.
I have a friend who frequently will run a kind of low key private goFundme for people she knows among her large friend groups on Facebook. It's with the person's permission, and often anonymous, but the person usually pops onto thank everyone.
To be honest, some of my friends are divided about her doing this (they think she has some kind of attention / saint complex!) but really- it's $5 to me. And maybe it isn't a catastrophic illness or whatever, but everyone has struggles. If we can collectively all give $5 and help a single mom get together her first and last, or help someone with vet bills, I don't know, what is the harm? I waste $5 all the time, and I am happy to send it that way to add a little good. I trust my friend, we aren't getting scammed, whatever her intentions.

i've done that. it started back when a woman's car was stolen in a hospital parking lot while she was receiving dialysis. a bunch of strangers chipped in to get her a new car. i didn't mind being one of them. it was a worthy cause. since then i've done it for some other worthy GFM accounts.
ETA: a friend was just telling me about a GFM she saw. a woman wants to get lipo for a specific condition she has. it is covered by her insurance but she wants to see a celeb surgeon in california to have it done. she live across the country. my friend and i debated whether her GFM was one of those "worthy" accounts. a few people have donated so far but nowhere near what she needs for a trip to CA and the procedure.

Possibly. It would really depend on the situation and if I was able to verify the truth of the story behind why they needed money.
