The correct word is Bawled. If you are balling your eyes out, that might be something you should keep to yourself (I mean, good for you, but you prob wouldnt post that on FB) And, yet, so many people do! 🤦♀️

I do know - it's what makes it so funny listening to my kids - they would cringe/die before pronouncing it as two syllables. They already try to downplay their bougie - definitely not going to pronounce it "right" You can tell them that a Pea who was born in Germany and who spoke German first as her native language agrees with you on your pronunciation of Porsche (which is after all a German car) and that they've been pronouncing it incorrectly all this time. You think these teens care lol! I actual have a JagWIRE - which is how they pronounce it - and they give me never ending shit about it - I do actually say jag pretty much all of the time - as apparently it's awesome to own and drive (when I let them!), but don't for a SECOND use a European pronunciation!

Also according to Dictionary.com, veteran can be pronounced either way. Honestly this thread is so hilarious as it's more rare than not that it's not just a regional difference - which is why I needled the OP.

According to Dictionary.com, it can be pronounced either way. Yeah, but that’s because stupid modern dictionaries started incorporating the pronunciations people are actually using, even when they’re WRONG.

West Coast checking in. I think I mostly hear the two-syllable version, even though it is spelled the three-syllable way. I just asked SO and he said it with two syllables. We also have the famous beach town called Carmel-by-the-sea up in Northern California. I say both Care-a-mel and Car-mull And the coastal CA city is Car-Mel 🤪

Sorry east coaster - you're saying it wrong! www.wideopencountry.com/how-to-pronounce-caramel/#:~:text=People%20on%20the%20east%20coast,pronouncing%20it%2C%20car%2Dmuhl If the link doesn't work - basically says the REST of the country says car-mul - "People on the east coast from Maine to Florida and throughout the south, including Atlanta, Mississippi, Louisiana, and parts of Texas tend to pronounce it like car-a-mel according to the Harvard Dialect Survey. People from the West coast tend to use two syllables instead of three, pronouncing it, car-muhl." West coaster. ESL, but I learned Car a mel. 3 syllables.

It's jew-el-ry...not jew-le-ry. Not if you spell the word “jewellery” as people in the UK and Commonwealth do. We write “jewellery” and say “Jew-le-ry” It makes sense when you think of what a jeweller makes:- jewellery.

The car thing is funny to me as my kids and I were talking about how people who use the European/British pronunciation for luxury cars sound pretentious. They had me rolling. I pointed out that we always pronounce caprese the Italian way - even when waiters correct us - which happens a ton and also cracks us up. But they insist that you look like an asshole with your multiple syllable porsche and jaguar in flyover USA. Porsche is pronounced with two syllables Poor sha instead of one like some Americans pronounce it Poorsch. I think you know that and were saying that in your post, but I wasn't sure from your writing. Hearing it pronounced with one syllable like Poorsch makes me cringe a bit inside. I thought one syllable pronunciation was a nickname. Like Jag for Jaguar.

I was just joking with my students about this last week. One of them said it the American way and I corrected him. He didn't like it. [br What are options? Americans say it sort of like Ah-dee-des. Emphasis on the second syllable. Europeans say it as Ah-di-das. Emphasis on the third syllable. It is the combination of the German founder’s first and last name. P.S. Americans also say IKEA differently. We like to be different. 😂

OMG. My kid wants a different bed frame and desk so I’ve been looking at listings for used stuff on Marketplace. It’s takes everything in me to not claw my own eyes out after reading all the misspelled words in people’s posts for the things they have “up for sell.” 🙄

And while yes I can say rooooof - if I speak quickly and don't think about it - we have hail damaged on our ruff lol

There is no “r” in Washington.
Someone mentioned Spanish words. My primary high school Spanish teacher learned Spanish from her DH who emigrated from northern Spain. One of the earliest things she taught us was how z is pronounced differently in parts of Spain and in the Americas. So some words she would say would sound different than how the other Spanish teacher said them. My DH apparently never learned this in his Spanish class, so when we went to Cadiz in 2007, on a cruise I was constantly correcting his pronunciation. And he still says it wrong.

It was what I was brought up to say, too.

I hate when peple say JAG-WIRE. It is like they can’t read. There there is no wire in Jaguar. I hate this so much. That is my school's mascot and I've been listening to people butchering it for 22 years. When a certain person does the morning announcements she always says it wrong. I hate it so, so much.

The all time worst pronunciation to me is supos-a-blee. It makes the person sound like a toddler who can't pronounce hard D sounds. It's suposeDly. I almost screamed when I heard Rachel Maddow say suposablee on air. Like nails on a chalkboard, right? Do they also say, "Lie-berry" instead of library? I'll bet they do. Topped by the worst of them, "Buh-skeddy" for spaghetti. Mercy. Please tell me you're kidding about Rachel. She has a Ph.D., for the love of Pete.

Let's not forget all the people who say, "I could care less," when it's the exact opposite of what they mean. It doesn't even make sense!

It’s a regional thing. I’m midwestern, so I pronounce caramel as car-mul. Care-a-mel sounds pretentious and wrong to me.
Since we’re on the subject, insurance is not INsurance. No emphasis on the in. Also, preventive. PREVENT-IVE. Not prevent-TA-tive.
