Agreed. What are the others saying it is?! Probably the shortcut word…car-mel. I probably say it that way most of the time. 😆😆 Now that I see the other responses, I guess car-mull would actually be how I say it most of the the time. East coast New Englander here.

In the same vein can we talk about veterans?
IT IS VET-ER-ANS
NOT VE-TRANS.
I feel your pain.

This vent was spurred by yet another cooking video in which the word was both spelled and pronounced incorrectly.
And I agree on veterans as well.

Sorry east coaster - you're saying it wrong! www.wideopencountry.com/how-to-pronounce-caramel/#:~:text=People%20on%20the%20east%20coast,pronouncing%20it%2C%20car%2Dmuhl If the link doesn't work - basically says the REST of the country says car-mul - "People on the east coast from Maine to Florida and throughout the south, including Atlanta, Mississippi, Louisiana, and parts of Texas tend to pronounce it like car-a-mel according to the Harvard Dialect Survey. People from the West coast tend to use two syllables instead of three, pronouncing it, car-muhl."

Maybe it’s regional? I pronounce it “car-mul” when talking about caramel corn. But, say “care-a-mell” when taking about the soft candy or ice cream topping. I’m a midwesterner, if that makes a difference. Or I’m just weird. But don’t forget to give me my bonus points for always spelling it correctly!

I say "Car-Mul" ... but I spell it Caramel. Yep, this. I’m west coast. I can’t think of a time recently I’ve heard anyone IRL pronouncing it with three syllables. If I ever hear it that way it’s pretty rare.

West Coast checking in. I think I mostly hear the two-syllable version, even though it is spelled the three-syllable way. I just asked SO and he said it with two syllables. We also have the famous beach town called Carmel-by-the-sea up in Northern California.

i'll chime in...
it's extricate meaning take out or remove and not extradite meaning hand over to another jurisdiction or country not
to put it in context, a local news reporter was talking about someone who was injured and stuck in their car. she kept saying the victim needs to be extradited as soon as possible. this person was badly injured and the first responders need to extradite her as quickly and as safely as possible. as soon as the victim is extradited, the extent of her injuries can be assessed. she must have used the same wrong word 5 times. ugh.

LOL. How do you feel about eXpresso? How about eKcetera?
(Quick story. Our main airport here is O’Hare. I knew someone who always said “O’Hara.” One of my friends who must have been irked by the repeated error, exclaimed: “I didn’t know the Irish built that airport!”)

In the same vein can we talk about veterans? IT IS VET-ER-ANS NOT VE-TRANS. I feel your pain. I disagree about "veteran"... to me it's not "ve-tran" but it's also not "vet-er-an" with the second syllable pronounced distinctly as "er". It's more of an "uh" sound... "vet-uh-ran". And I'm in the three-syllable "caramel" group. I love this type of thread.

Sorry as a person who studied Linguistics, I cringe at the words correct/incorrect to describe regional differences. I thought this website was interesting: "English speakers use the French word, with a slightly different spin on the sound depending on which side of the Atlantic you're on. The British English pronunciation tends to be more "care," while the American pronunciation tends to "car." Within the United States, whether you say "mel" or "muhl" most likely depends on where you're from. People on the east coast from Maine to Florida and throughout the south, including Atlanta, Mississippi, Louisiana, and parts of Texas tend to pronounce it like car-a-mel according to the Harvard Dialect Survey. People from the West coast tend to use two syllables instead of three, pronouncing it, car-muhl." Edited to add: Despite years of training about regional differences, I still find some to be annoying as hell! My husband and I are both from CA but take our "coupon" and "apricot" pronunciation battle very seriously!

I’m a lifelong Californian, and I’m 100% on board with three syllables. Two syllables makes my ears hurt. BUT my mom is from the Northeast, and I think I pronounce lots of words her way. So other Californians think I’m mispronouncing them. 🤷♀️

I have never known anyone in real life who says car-a-mel. We all say Car-mel, but we know it is spelled caramel.
Here are mine:
The correct word is definitely. Defiantly means something else.
The correct word is Bawled. If you are balling your eyes out, that might be something you should keep to yourself (I mean, good for you, but you prob wouldnt post that on FB)

The British English pronunciation tends to be more "care," while the American pronunciation tends to "car." This British English person doesn’t know any British English person who says “care”. The word is pronounced the way lainey says above, with the first syllable of 3 being ka, short a like cat.

My vent is strictly related to my work. We are working with a product called a Dual-Directional Note. Long story short, you can make money if the market goes up or down. Hence Dual.
Different departments keep spelling it "duel". I have threatened to pull my sword on the next person to misspell it. LOL

And, what's with Anderson Cooper's relatively recent affectation of pronouncing "Man-had-den" instead of Manhattan?

The word is pronounced the way lainey says above, with the first syllable of 3 being ka, short a like cat. I'm English and I agree with Gillyp and Lainey. KA (rhymes with cat, emphasis on the first syllable) - ruh - mul I have two pet hates: - "him/her and I". That can never be correct. It is either "he/she and I" or "him/her and me". - "the team/family are...". They can have "the team/family is" or "the team/family members are". These are getting more and more common. Even newsreaders get them wrong. {climbs off soapbox before I really get started}
