Yes, it's politics!
Like many of us who follow the news and/or Disney, I've been following the dramaz between Disney and DeSantis, including the threats today to plunk a prison by the property.
Here is my question. I am lefty so the fact that to me this seems like a stupid fight for DeSantis to be picking doesn't say much. For those of you who are either yourself more conservative or around more conservative voters, are people viewing DeSantis positively based on this?

I'm happy this was announced today after his shit show of an announcement. I hope between this feud and his signing bill behind closed doors, he's burying himself deeper.

I am sure there will be some that thinks it is great. They want to stick it to the woke. Obviously I think he is being foolish as Disney is a huge employer in his state. I think he looks like a childish bully most of the time but I know many that think it is justified because they are woke. Oh how I hate the word. He won't be governor forever though so I would assume at some point things may swing around a bit - not expecting Florida to change to blue but maybe a bit less combative.

I have to say that no one I know is talking about it at all. Is it a big topic elsewhere?

Conservatives around here that I have talked to think that it’s great. I think that he is making some very foolish statements that he might regret.

I see talk about it on Twitter but not really IRL. But I try not to talk about politics with people I know are conservative.

Locally, I don’t hear people talking about it. But, I also don’t talk about political things with people outside of my family and closest friends. I know many of my friends have been going to Disneyland a lot lately, and a few went to WDW for Spring Break.

I have to say that no one I know is talking about it at all. Is it a big topic elsewhere? Same here. Maybe because we are several hours from a Disney park? I don't know but it's not a topic of conversation at all.

I have to say that no one I know is talking about it at all. Is it a big topic elsewhere? As a Florida resident it is a 24/7 topic of conversation on the local news, both as a political discussion and a tourist discussion. Disney employs many people and brings enormous amounts of cash spending vacationers to the state. It is a big issue for many Floridians who work for Disney, or work Disney adjacent, as tourism provides so many jobs down here. I live in a very conservative, previously Trump supporting area. Most of them now support DeSantis and his homophobic points of view. My neighborhood fb page is filled with praise for the outstanding job he's doing as our governor, between this and the 6 week abortion ban. It is very difficult to live in swfl as a non-conservative. Very, very difficult. I've heavily debated leaving the state and if I were a bit closer to retirement age I'd feel more comfortable giving up my career and starting over.

Let’s hope that doesn’t mean he’s president.
I’m in a red county that is turning purple from people moving up from Palm Beach, Dade, and Broward and down from New York and New Jersey. People here are staunchly in one camp or the other. I’m p*$$ed because DeSantis legitimizes the crowd whose bibles say, “Love one another as long as they’re straight, born in the USA, and believe in Jesus.”

The only thing I have noticed in personal circles is that a parent pulled their kid out of a band trip to Disney over spring break. From what I understand this parent is a pretty die hard right winger. I'm willing to bet their kid hates them.

My Mom worked for Disney for 15 years, my Dad lives north of the Magic Kingdom, and I've been on the Disney parts of the internet since 1996. So my experience is completely skewed.
I expect that if they aren't in FL, aren't a Disney fan, or deep in the Culture Wars, it's not anywhere near people's radar. But within the Disney Fan community, a surprisingly amount of people who fashion themselves as conservatives, including the libertarian wing are actually quite bothered by DeSantis and the legislature's actions. They know how the district benefited the state of FL economically for 50 years, and given the language the politicians are using about this being about retaliation for speech, plus the growing, impending insurance crisis, they are finding it more difficult than usual to dismiss it. There are a few "go woke, go broke" people but even they are getting shouted down by other conservatives about this being-anti traditional GOP core principles.

My dd works at WDW and hasn't brought it up at all to me. She's been way more interested in the union negotiations and the fact that they're all about to get raises.

I really hope he doesn’t ever make it to president.

I would think that pretty much all companies would be (or at least should be) concerned about how DeSantis is so willing to get revenge against a corporation like this. If he will do this to Disney, what would he do to any other company or person who goes against him? I don't have any plans to go to Florida or to Disney, and am pretty neutral when it comes to liking Disney or not. But I think this is a really bad sign of things to come if he and others like him are left unchecked.

Last week he talked about taxes on Disney hotels or tolls on the roads. I think he's just bluffing and mad that Disney out smarted him. Or maybe he's trying to counter the negative publicity from being on a book tour during the flooding in Ft Lauderdale or signing the abortion ban in the middle of the night. www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65216192"But now that Disney has reopened this issue, we're not just going to void the development agreement they tried to do, we're going to look at things like taxes on the hotels, we're going to look at things like tolls on the roads," he said, adding the state would also look to develop property it owns near Disney.

The fact that he’s willing to screw with a company that brings in roughly $85B annually shows what a vengeful dipshit he is.
He’s another wrecking ball - smarter than Trump, for sure - but apparently, not THAT smart.

heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/april-17-2023-monday?r=1f0orz&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=emailNow, though, the party is openly embracing the replacement of democracy with a strong government that would make white Christian nationalism the law of the land. In illustration of that position, Florida governor Ron DeSantis, who has used the government to impose a Christian agenda on his state, today continued his crusade against the Walt Disney Company. A year ago, angry that then–chief executive officer Bob Chapek opposed his measure limiting discussion of gender identity in public school classrooms, DeSantis tried to take control of the company’s special self-governing district through a new board. Shortly before the takeover, Disney CEO Bob Iger outfoxed DeSantis by legally changing the terms of the agreement under which it has operated for decades, limiting the power of the board in perpetuity. After Trump officials mocked him for being beaten by Mickey Mouse, DeSantis today suggested he is determined to use the power of the government to force Disney, a private company, to bend to his authority. He threatened to build a rival amusement park or a state prison on land next to Disney’s Florida park. Disney promptly responded by advertising a “first-ever Disneyland After Dark” LGBTQIA+ themed event night at its California Disneyland resort, and former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele tweeted: “When families stop visiting & Disney’s $75.2B economic impact & $5.8B tax revenues drop; its 75K employees face layoffs & 463K jobs are also imperiled what would your analytics say caused that to happen? WTF, Dumbo.”

I live in rural Iowa. If I asked 10 people today (and I never see 10 people in a day) ... I can almost guarantee no one would have any opinion about it. A few might say "I went to Disneyworld 10 years ago" ...
No one around here cares.

I'm in Florida in a very red county (80% red voters) and I'm not really hearing much...even on our community fb pages which generally bleed red and/or Conferderate. Do you think that is because people are unhappy with it but don’t want to call it out? They don’t care? They agree with it? Or some other reason nobody is talking about it? Or as someone else posted above, maybe it is not being covered as heavily there because that would possibly make DeSantis look bad?

I live in Jacksonville and it is covered on our local news. I wish Disney would just say okay and move it somewhere that appreciates the economic impact on a state's balance sheet. DeSantis is such a tool.
He was married at DisneyWorld.
