When I went to the ASO performance, I wore a dress with flats.
On field trips with school, I wore typical school clothes.
For night time at The Rep (theater in Little Rock) I wore a nice pair of khakis, nice shirt, black shoes.

When I saw Hadestown, I wore a green bias-cut silk midi skirt, a black cashmere sweater and black combat boots. When I saw Hamilton, I wore black moto leggings, a cream cashmere sweater and the aforementioned combat boots.

I don't dress up for local performances like community theater or high school. I wear nicer clothes for bigger productions.

Not shorts and flip flops casual but I go in jeans and sweaters etc... Trust me, the actors are happy to perform for an audience - they don't care what you wear. Truly. Same.

I like to dress up so I do, except I wear low-heeled or flat shoes. I like for the experience to be a bit elevated. I don't care what everyone else wears. Just enjoy the show and don't talk out loud. I'm more casual at our local theater, except for the Rat Pack tribute and I thought it would be fun to dress according to the vibe.

dewryce SIX will be in San Antonio in October... We are finally getting our Hamilton in San Antonio in June from the 1st n 2nd covid reschedule... weve had those tickets for 3 years... lol Back to OP if I am going to the theater in San Antonio or Austin.. its Broadway across America... so fancy shmancy for us... which is a nicer cocktail dress... Our local city theater... i am usually volunteering and we wear black skirts/slacks with white blouse... dressed up with scarf or jewelry... its part of the dress code Thank you, I don’t know how I missed that in the upcoming announcements I get. So glad you finally get to go to the show! We love the Broadway Across America productions, such high quality productions.

I usually dress up a bit to go to the theater.
I’ll dress up more for a Saturday night performance than a Sunday matinee or a week night performance. I really go all out for any performances in December.
I always think it’s a treat to go to any type of live performance. For me, dressing a little nicer than I normally do is part of the experience. I don’t judge others for how they choose to dress. I’m just glad they are supporting the arts.

We're a theater family. My mother was a costume designer (hobby) and my sister and I were involved in dance/music/theater all of our lives. We were brought up with the belief that it was a dressy occasion and I brought my kids up the same way. Slacks/khakis and a polo for DH, slacks and a button down for my son, slacks with blouses or dresses for my daughters and I. It doesn't have to be "black tie" dressy, but no jeans, shorts, or t-shirts. It doesn't matter if it's a matinee or night performance, nor does it matter if it's a community theatre or a professional show at the local Fox. But that appears to be less and less the case for a lot of people around here. I understand that not everyone was brought up that way so I generally don't mind. I have more of a beef with the people who think it's okay to show up late and make noise during the performance. That's just rude and disrespectful to everyone else attending and to the actors putting on the show.

The first - and only - time I went to a professional theater production was an evening near the holidays for Phantom of the Opera in 1991. I wore a black velvet straight skirt below the knee with a black-beaded red sweater top, and heels - which I despise. Judging by the way most were dressed, I was perhaps a tiny bit under dressed, but acceptable.

Six is super fun! We really enjoyed it. I think it was in Dallas back in December--so that might not be an option. We didn't see it here because we were already planning to see it in London. We are looking into next season’s schedules, so maybe it will return. Six is awesome! Well worth seeing.

Since you are in MN, and I know where you are going, I would say nice pants and top. maybe a thinner top with a cardigan over it, so you can layer and be warm enough not to carry a coat. Also a pair of shoes, flats, because you will have to walk, and who knows what the sidewalks will be like, even a nice pair of flat boots. When we do theater in the cities, even Chanhassen we usually dress fairly nice, in pants. Never dresses, unless it's summer, and then I might do a capri. Have fun!! Jealous!

I went to see Six at the Providence Performing Arts Center last week. I went with my sister and 2 friends. We were all dressed for the theatre (it was an evening performance). I will say that the apparel ran the gambit from us, to those dressed up more than we were, to those who wore jeans, to others in t-shirts.

"Sunday Dress" is how I would describe my attire.
At one time DH always wore a suit, but in today's world--nice dress slacks and a shirt would be just fine.

Just got home from a show and most people were in nice jeans or pants and a sweater or blouse, maybe a jacket. I didn’t see many ties and I didn’t see anything fancy or formal, even on a Saturday night in DC.
We see a lot of shows in a lot of venues (my kid is a pit musician so we see more shows than average) and I would say most shows are pretty casual anymore. Some venues are MUCH more formal - know your venue and you’ll be fine.

Like I thought, it was all over the place. I saw a young twenty-something wearing holey jeans, teens wearing what I wouldn't let mine wear (sweatpants/sweatshirts/Stocking cap)...but I did see men in suits and women in dresses and heels.

I saw a young twenty-something wearing holey jeans, teens wearing what I wouldn't let mine wear (sweatpants/sweatshirts/Stocking cap)...but I did see men in suits and women in dresses and heels. But most importantly, how was the show? We moved here last fall too late to get season tickets, but are on the list for this year. We've talked about trying to get seats, but at this point it would be resale tickets and those get really pricey. But IMO, it's a show worth seeing over and over. Another dress criteria option--do you have to walk any sort of distance from a parking garage? If so, I'd need to wear shoes that I can walk a bit in and I wouldn't wear a skirt if it was cold. And the wind was so cold over the weekend! I did fine all winter, but for some reason, third winter is really making me want to hibernate for a few more weeks. For school plays, the kids wore what they wanted and I'd probably wear what I wore to volunteer at the school--pants (not jeans) and a nice top. Community theatre would probably be the same. For a professional show, I'd probably wear similar, but maybe a little dressier. We saw The Cursed Child last fall in London and I wore a knit dress that I wear for travel. DH wore nice jeans and a button down. I don't think we looked out of place at all. It was 6 hours of theatre (a 3 hour matinee and a 3 hour evening show), so I wanted to be comfortable and not in heels walking around London and riding the underground.

Even though we had last minute nosebleeds, it was amazing! Everything I thought it would be. This traveling cast was just phenomenal. My boys loved it too! It also helped that I chose our dining option perfectly---time, place and food. It was a special night...no bickering, everyone engaged and the four of us doing something special together---doesn't happen enough anymore.

I lived in Manhattan for many years. None of the folks I knew got particularly dressed up for seeing a show; however, every person from out of town did.

I like to dress up, so I use it as an excuse to do so. We went to Hamilton a couple years ago and both my daughter and I were in dresses (nicer than church, not quite cocktail - I'd bought mine for a wedding for example), my husband wore a button down and slacks and my son polo and khakis. I find dresses easy, so wear them often.
The only event I've been to in the last 20+ years which didn't have a huge range of attire was the goofy Bridgerton Ball experience. Everyone embraced their inner Duchess and went crazy. I'd never seen so many formal dresses in my life.

My husband and I just had this discussion as we attended 3 shows in NYC this past weekend. We always dress up for a show (no jeans) and we were amazed at how few people were dressed in anything other than jeans. I can see it more at a matinee to be casual, but a 7pm show should have a little effort.
One of our shows was seeing Bono at the Beacon theater. I had on wide leg black slacks and a sparkly top. DH had on a button down shirt with a jacket. I saw probably only 10 other people not wearing jeans. Some even had shorts on. This was a very expensive ticket and I would have excepted a little more effort, but I guess that is apparently out-of-date thinking on my part. Oh well, I wanted to dress up so I did!

We were on the North Loop and about a mile away from the Orpheum since everything nearby was full. I chose Bar La Grassa, but I also know Smack Shack and Parlour are also good in the NL.

I don't go to see "theater" performances, as I hate plays, but if I'm going to a show in a theater (example, went to see David Sedaris in Iowa City on Saturday) I tend to wear a casual dress with leggings and boots and probably a sweater.

I enjoy David Sedaris’ recorded story telling. Did you find his live performance engaging? Unfortunately, he isn’t scheduled to be in my city during his upcoming tour.
