I am just wondering, locally/personally, if you go to the theatre (particularly professional evening performances), what level do you/spouse/kids dress up?
I am always surprised by the variance. Every year I usually go to one or two local/regional performances, and people seem to wear everything from jeans and a sweatshirt to mother of the bride-type/cocktail dresses and suits---but most people put on a nice pair of pants and a dressy shirt/sweater---seems to be the norm.
I also go to professional performances of some sort in the Twin Cities area on occasion, and I would say its a similar vibe but elevated some and usually less of the sweatshirt and jeans types.
We are going to Hamilton tonight. My guys are all wearing button downs, dress/khaki pants and their dressier shoes. No one wants to wear a tie, and I am fine with that. I am debating what to wear; I won't go too causal, but I am just wondering what you all wear. I went to Hadestown last spring with a coworker who is very casual, so I just wore normal work wear (black ankle pants and a nice blouse with flats--and we were still wearing masks in Mpls at that point); I might boost it up a bit tonight but still be comfortable (probably some sort of layers since it is cold here again and I don't want to bring my parka.)
I am not basing my look on the peas opinions or anything, but I am just wondering what you tend to wear to professional theater. Is it different than local? What is it like in your state/country?

We went to Six a few weeks ago - a Friday evening performance- I wore a black pencil skirt, black heels and a black wrap sweater - I’d say I was more dressed up than most lol.
We also had champagne delivered to ours seats…

It’s all over the place here… I wear either nice pants and sweater type thing or a maxi skirt/top thing. I don’t wear heels as I hate them. Lol
If my husband would go it would be jeans and a button down shirt. No tennis shoes, probably grey Sketchers ship ones. . He doesn’t own any “dress up” clothes. I gave up on that years ago.

I saw Moulin Rouge a few weeks ago and I was dressed in what you said you wear to work. I work from home so to me that was dressed up.
I felt solidly in the middle as far as dress but didn't see anyone dressed too up or down.

Depends on the show. Mostly we wear nice pants and top. I’m not a skirt/dress kinda gal. Would elevate the look with shoes, accesories/jewelry and for me, hair style. It also depends on what kind of mood we are in. Fine dining before the show? Or a drive through? Enjoy the show!

I'm personally all over the place. He's surprised me with tickets and I've been in nice jeans and a dressier top and we also get glam in sequins and his tux and go to the diner and have been to shows that way also.
There doesn't seem to be a real dress code anywhere anymore so we just dress like the world revolves around us 😆

We fall into the business casual bucket for theater showings. More dressier for a holiday performance at the Seattle Symphony (but still no tie), less dressier for the local kid stage performance.
I remember my first Broadway show and being surprised at seeing other tourists there in shorts and t-shirts.

In London and NY, usually nice jeans and a top. I'd be inclined to go a bit dressier if I weren't usually walking several blocks and living out of a suitcase in those locations.
At home, I usually do a simple dress or dress pants because I'm not worried about ruining my shoes! I don't think I really change what I choose depending on whether it's a national touring show, regional professional, local summer production, etc.
DH will do nice jeans and a sport coat.
I've never felt out of place and find that regardless of the locale, dress seems to run the gamut but tends toward more casual than dressy.

It is nice enough that I would not want them to ---but I would probably let my boys wear a nice sweatshirt but with khakis ---not sweatpants LOL. It says it is casual dress (which is 95%+ of the mid to nice places in the Twin Cities)

My sister and I saw Six on a Friday afternoon Boston. We wore black leggings/ slacks, sweater/blouse, booties and dressy scarf. Fun that I showed up to her house dressed very similarly to how she was dressed. dewryce…we absolutely loved Six!!

We dress up, but we like dressing up and look forward to opportunities to. I used to do local theatre and remember the excitement for a live performance and want to honor (in my mind) that by making it feel special.

My city has several type of venues.
Casual Indoor theater or arena: Leggings-fancier top-cardigan-boots.
Fancy indoor theater: Dress with heels
Outdoor theater: One long tiered stadium style built-in cement benches or sitting on grass >> blanket or low chair type seat: I would wear capris and a tank top a and I'd bring a cardigan and throw blanket in case it gets cool or cold.
Personally, in the last decade or so (not because of the pandemic, because of becoming more selective about when and where I go and not feeling obligated to accept every invite) .....I don't go out as much as I use to. If I do go out, I like to dress up a little or a lot.
These days, it seems anything goes. I've seen anything from formal attire to ripped jeans, leggings, bootie shorts, yoga pants, sweat pants, t-shirts, crop tops, birthday gatherings, sweatshirts (and everything in-between),........ at Weddings, Showers, Funerals, Graduations, School plays, School concerts, Ceremonies, on an airplane, etc...

This, except I wouldn’t wear a dress ever. DH owns one suit that is about three sizes too big on him and he hates wearing it. He doesn’t even own a pair of dress shoes. The last time we went to a theatrical performance it was The Lion King probably 20 years ago and I think he wore shorts and a polo shirt to that. The most dressed up either of us tends to get is business casual.

I've seen anything from cocktail dresses to shorts and a graphic t shirt. For plays, I see a lot of business dress and cocktail party wear, very little jeans. Concerts and other performances are where I see the most variation.
I personally go with black dress pants, heels and a dressy top that's season appropriate. I will actually wear more jewelry as well. I normally only wear a pair of studs and my wedding ring. I have two dresses that I would wear to the theater if I thought it warranted a dress.

Not shorts and flip flops casual but I go in jeans and sweaters etc... Trust me, the actors are happy to perform for an audience - they don't care what you wear. Truly.

There doesn't seem to be a real dress code anywhere anymore so we just dress like the world revolves around us I love that! I may adopt that as my mantra. We tend to dress up a bit for live theater. There are so few chances anymore to get dressed up and feel special. We don't go as dressy for concerts or similar events but still nicer than an everyday look.

I’m wearing a back blouse with puffy sleeves, tan/black/burgundy plaid slim ankle length dress pants and black chunky loafers.
On the dressier side of what I wear to work.
Husband is in an Untuckable dress shirt and khakis. My boys in dress pants and white dress shirts. They don’t have much for dress clothes. They wear 95% athletic clothing of T-shirt’s, hoodies, workout/leisure/sweat pants. They have ties and blazers but that’s too much for this occasion imo. They have polos too, but it’s snowed off and on today—no coats but not warm enough for short sleeves. It was 80 last week. Sigh.

Like you, I always see such a range of dress - from shorts/t-shirts to cocktail dresses and pearls. I tend to dress kind of dressy casual. I typically wear nice pants and a dressy blouse.

Saw Six on Broadway last year, it was really fun. To me, more like a concert experience than a musical, but really enjoyable. I am usually wearing dark/black jeans with a dressier top with some sort of necklace, but I’ve seen everything from shorts, t’s, ripped/worn jeans to formalwear at B’way. shows. This has been the norm for as long as I’ve been seeing shows in NYC, for close to 50 years.

I have two dresses I usually rotate back and forth dependent on weather. They are a little nicer than my normal everyday dresses.
I just got the flyer for what shows are coming in the next season and I'm deciding what I want to see. So many good ones coming next year.

It depends on my mood and the weather. I’ve worn jeans and a sweater and I’ve worn dresses and heels. I don’t pay attention at all to what anyone else is wearing.

I have had season tickets to Broadway Dallas for 4 years. There is everything from formal wear to casual wear. My friend and I usually dress business casual. Every once in a while we will wear jeans and nice tops, but usually it's a dress or black pants.

I like to dress up which is usually a dress. Last time it I chose slacks and an embroidered blazer. I realized too late for that performance that I had no black tights to go with the skirt I'd picked out and it was too cold to go without. I don't get many other occasions for dresses or skirts particularly in winter.

I'll be there Sunday evening with a girlfriend. I'm planning on wearing black slacks, heels, and a nice sweater with lace sleeves.
Now that I'm not as slim as I used to be, I don't wear dresses or skirts as often as I used to. I don't feel as comfortable and not as attractive, so I tend not to want to go out as often. Typical middle age trap I've fallen into.

On my way to dinner and the theatre right now. Wearing a nice blouse, a nice pair of jeans, and ankle boots. This is in Seattle where I'll fit in with everyone else. Normally I'd wear a nice pair of pants instead of the jeans but I'm losing weight and all that fits me are 2 new pair of jeans I recently purchased.
