I used to keep my large cast iron skillet in there. But then one day my daughter called in a panic. She got home from school to black smoke everywhere in the kitchen. The cat jumped on the stove turning on the self cleaning feature. I had one of those rubber handle thingies on the handle too. Plus the oven door lock will not unlock until the oven is cooled down to a certain degree. It was a HOT MESS.

My Dad was a firefighter and taught us the oven was for cooking only. And nothing other than maybe empty pots were to be put on the stove top. He saw too many house fires caused by improper use of the stove/oven.

I have a very small galley kitchen. At one time I put the loaf of bread in there, just so it was not taking up the tiny counter space. Turned oven on to preheat and created a melted wrapper on bread situation. ...and that was the end of storing bread there...or anything else there.

No, I don’t.
My MIL kept all of her snacks in her oven. I remember my grandmother keeping bread and crackers in hers.

I had a friend years ago who kept dirty dishes in hers. I think she didn’t have a dishwasher. It kept the kitchen looking tidier. I did this exactly one time. I was a brand new army wife many moons ago and we had been at our first posting for about a week. I had been making cookies when I saw the CO's wife come up to the door. I tossed all the dirty dishes into the oven, wiped the counter, put the finished dough in the fridge and welcomed her in. She was a very nice lady, explained where to find things on the base and essentially just welcomed me to the this weird new world and left after about a half hour. I turned the oven on to preheat, got the dough out of the fridge and put it on the cookie sheets. As I was doing this, I noticed a very unpleasant smell and I suddenly remembered the dirty dishes - they were mostly Tupperware, and they had started to melt. It wasn't pretty.

I used to store cast iron in there, but I got tired of having to move them all the time. They are stored in the basement now and can be brought up if I need one

Yes, my skillets are in the oven. I have a small kitchen and use skillets in some way for 85% of cooked meals, so it makes sense for us. Because they are oven safe and we access them often, I feel pretty safe doing so.

Nope, but I keep my cookie sheets in the 'proofing drawer' underneath the oven. Never knew it was for that until I started watching the Great British Baking Show. I just thought it was for storage! It definitely is for storage. If it were meant to hold food, the sides and back would be higher to prevent dust from getting in there. IDK if British oven drawers are different in some way, but here, they are for storage

Yes. The turkey roasting tin lives in there, because it's too big for any of my cupboards. I take it out when heating the oven but if I forget, it doesn't matter much.

One time a friend of mine had made a sheet cake and stored it in a large rectangular Tupperware container. She was getting ready for a gathering and temporarily put it in the oven to make space on her countertop. Someone needed to heat something in the oven and the results were not good! My mom used to store tupperware in the oven as the kitchen in the house I grew up in had zero storage. She killed TWO ovens that way. My parents were rarely angry with each other, but I still remember how pissed dad was the second time she killed the oven by preheating it with the tupperware in it.

Never have, because I don't like having to remove things in order to cook something in the oven. I don't like have a pile a clutter (removed items) taking up counter space while something is cooking in the oven.

Our house is 100+ years old, our ovens are from the 60s, they’re a very specific size and of course you can’t find replacement parts for them. All that to say, one oven only heats up to about 250 degrees (the other works fine), so we keep stuff in the “warming oven”, namely the baking sheets dh uses in the smoker cuz they’re big and we haven’t found a better spot to put them.

It never occurred to me to store anything in there. An old bf of mine introduced me to the concept when I smelled burnt plastic as I was preheating the oven to make dinner for us. "Why would you leave a skillet in the oven?!" said I. "'Cuz that's where they GO!" said he. LOL
Thus, in one lesson I learned a) that people use ovens for storage, and b) that I should never, ever think about doing that myself!

Nope. Pizza stone lives in the oven. Cast iron skillets are on the range top. We use them pretty much exclusively unless making pasta or rice. The warming drawer stores cake pans and jelly roll type pans We have a slim upright cabinet for cookie sheets and cutting Boards. Frying pans are in a long drawer. Pots with kids are in lower cabinets facing the stove/ovens on pull outs.If we stored stuff in the oven it would be very bad since we use it all the time. Gas top/electric ovens Bold mine... Do they enjoy the rolling in and out?? 😂😂😂😂 That’s awesome! They do enjoy it very much!

No, but we did in the small house I grew up in. Pizza pans, cookie sheets and skillets.
I have a very healthy, very fit and active friend who moved into a teeny 1BR condo in a senior living facility. She has the tiniest kitchen you've ever seen! Ditto living room, dining area. Tiny. She stores all of her shoes in her oven!

When I was a kid, leftover desserts, like cake or brownies, were stored in the oven. More than once someone would preheat the oven and smell baked goods before remembering food was in there. We don't store anything in our oven. As a side note, when we bought our first house, it had a large kitchen. At the first viewing, I was opening drawers and cupboards. Except for a cupboard of dinnerware and a cupboard of food, the entire kitchen storage was full of fabric and craft supplies. This included the oven. Turns out the owners did not cook. Since they ate out for most meals, the storage (we are talking an insane number of drawers and cabinets) was put to better use. This reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City, didn't she keep clothes or shoes in her oven? Also I think Carol from RHONY used her oven and kitchen as an office, if I remember correctly. 🤔 I have put the cast iron skillet my husband uses in the oven until he gets around to cleaning it. He's very particular about it and wants to be the one to do it. So, for that reason I like peabay's idea of putting neon post-its on the oven.

No, I use my oven a lot. My mother's favorite joke was "My husband said we could just get rid of our oven but it is such a good place to hide my wife's Christmas presents."

My father-in-law passed away a few weeks ago and when we cleaned out his apartment, we found literally dozens and dozens of plastic WalMart bags stored in the oven. Thank God he never used it but still!!!! I guess he figured it was an electric oven instead of a gas oven, it would be ok.

We keep our iron skillets in there for some reason. I do keep my Iron Skillet in the oven when not in use. It is so heavy and I use it quite a bit so it is just the best place for it.

No. I can see this only leading to a disaster. Even if I remembered, chances are my husband probably wouldn't check before he preheated the oven. If I am out of room in my cabinets to the point I have to store stuff (that could easily melt) in my oven, I need to declutter.

Nope, but I keep my cookie sheets in the 'proofing drawer' underneath the oven. Never knew it was for that until I started watching the Great British Baking Show. I just thought it was for storage! The oven in this house has a drawer labeled “Warming Drawer.” I have never had one before so I wasn’t entirely sure what to use it for. There is a dial on the stove front that operates the warming drawer. I don’t have anything in it yet. That may change as I continue to unpack.

My mom kept all her (clean) pots and pans in the oven. She rarely used her oven - so I guess it wasn't too much of a hassle. I use my oven more often, and do not keep things stored in there.

Never. lol. If I stored things like cookie sheets or cast iron skillets in there I know I would forget and turn the oven on, then as soon as it got nice and hot I'd remember. Then I'd have to deal with blazing hot pans and cookie sheets. Or, if I stored other items that weren't heat proof I'd forget also, turn on the oven, then regret it as soon as it heated up. \ I do store cookie sheets, pizza pans, muffin tins, etc. in the drawer underneath. I'd never heard of a "proofing drawer" until I started watching "The Great British Baking Show", lol. But I also have never had anything that needed to be "proofed", and I don't plan to, so storage it is.

Nope, I use my ovens too much to store things in them. I’d have to constantly move the stuff out to use the ovens and that would be a hassle. Plus I have enough other storage to keep all my pans, Tupperware and other kitchen stuff in cabinets.
