Outlander by Diana Gabaldon hands down.
I love historical fiction and this series has it all. A bit of time travel (also a love of mine), great characters and tons of history! It's a series that's very well researched (a huge pet peeve of mine when it comes to HF), and I loved learned about all of the medicinal plants, the early medicine and how Claire made things work and the history that is covered throughout all of the books. I adore the characters and grew to really care about what happened to them.

I have several, it just depends on my mood. Harry PotterWhen I want suspense/death/intense: Patricia Cornwall ~ Kay Scarpetta Series (The first 10 or 12 only) Light mystery: Sue Grafton ~ Kinsey Milhone Series
Somewhere between the two: James Patterson ~ Alex Cross SeriesParanormal/Romance: Kay Hooper ~ Bishop/Special Crimes Unit SeriesA more involved reading: Diana Galbadon ~ The Outlander SeriesComplete fluff: Janet Evanovich ~ Stephanie Plum Series (the earlier ones are definitely better) iluvpink I read the first one and really enjoyed it; bought the second one and forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder! birukitty I love Outlander for all the reasons you listed. Unfortunately I can’t always read them because my brain just isn’t able to concentrate for the length of the book. Having to go back and look all.the.time. is no fun. So I have the Bees book but I haven’t read it yet.

I am not sure that trilogies count as a series but I'm going include them - my favourite author of all times is Robertson Davies and he wrote three trilogies and two thirds of a fourth before he died.
My next favourite series is Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie novels.

#1 favourite is definitely Harry Bosch by Michael Connelly. It’s also one of my favourite TV series.
I also enjoy Lee Child’s Jack Reacher.
I loved Faith Martin’s DI Hilary Greene.

#1 favourite is definitely Harry Bosch by Michael Connelly. It’s also one of my favourite TV series. I didn't really think of those, but I agree. It's an amazing series and one of my favorites for sure. (I'm watching the Lincoln Lawyer, part 1 of Season 2 right now). Along with that is John Grisham's trilogy of Jake Brigance, starting with A Time to Kill. I also *adore* Dennis LeHane's series called The Given Day, also historical crime fiction. But my all-time favorite series is Beartown. Just all. the. feels. Lisa ETA: Steve Cavanagh and the Eddie Flynn series too!

Inspector Lynley series. Author Elizabeth George The people who produced it for TV apparently never read the books as the descriptions of the characters was so far off. In the books the female assistant is described as very unattractive but in the made for TV series, she is an attractive woman.

As much as I love the Harry Potter series, I will no longer touch anything created by transphobe JK Rowling.
I’ve really enjoyed Duncton Wood and Game of Thrones series. One day I’d like to read Outlander.
ETA: there’s a duology connected to a trilogy that I absolutely loved by Leigh Bardugo. The duology is Six of Crows, the trilogy is Shadow and Bone. I read the duology first and was immediately hooked. Great, fast paced adventure storytelling. I also enjoyed the trilogy, which was written first. While I technically read them out of order, I don’t think it mattered much.
Netflix made a series of this world, combining both series together. I haven’t watched season 2 yet, but enjoyed the first.

Valdemar by Mercedes Lackey - huge series, lightly magic but written with a light hand and super relatable
The Atlantis Grail by Vera Nazarian - requires quite a bit of suspension of disbelief, but it’s a good romp. Lol
Wizard of Time by GL Breedon
Okay….now that I’ve outed myself as a COMPLETE geek….lol

Each book has a stand-alone crime, but they definitely need to be read in order for the character development and stories.

I rarely make it through an entire series if it goes on too long. I dropped off the In Death series around #20. Here are the series I have recommended to others. I guess I like paranormal/dystopian in series form.
End of Days by Susan ee (3 books)
Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning (first 5, did not continue with new main character)
Everything by Ilona Andrews. Multiple series written:
Kate Daniels - 10+ books/novellas/spin-offs was supposed to be done but fans won’t quit
Hidden Legacy - romance, 6 books
Innkeeper - great for all ages, fantastic world building, 5 books, overlap characters with The Edge
The Edge - I think I only DNF the third book, 4 books total, overlap characters with Inkeeper
Kinsman - more romance skewed, loosely connected universe but not an overarching series

I also sometimes don't make it through an entire series if it goes on too long. I just lose interest. The main one that comes to mind is the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. I loved it at first, it's funny and sexy. But I think we are on around #21 and I haven't read the last few, the story lines have become increasingly ridiculous and she just needs to pick Ranger or Joe and be done!
I loved the first two or three books of the Outlander series but I've lost interest now. I started reading these books 30 years ago and I can't remember all the details from book to book so I just stopped. I'm enjoying the series on Starz.
My current favorite series is a zombie apocalypse of all things but I love the characters. It's by Sarah Lyons Fleming and the first series starts with Until the End of the World. I listened to the audio version which is narrated by one of my favorites, Julia Whelan. There are 2 more books in that series. Then there is another series in the same zombie universe but with different characters and location (New York City). There are 3 books in that series as well. And now we have a third series in another location which will have 4 books, then there will be a final book to wrap up all the characters in all the locations.
Another series that I still love is the Lucas Davenport Prey series by John Sandford. I've been reading these books since the 80's and I love how the main character has grown and changed through the years.
Other favorites: Hell Divers series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. First 5 are great but we are now on about #11 and it's getting repetitive. Lisa Gardner has a couple of series that I like - one about a Boston Police Detective, D.D. Warren, and one about an FBI profiler. Beartown series The One series by Nora Roberts. I loved the first two but haven't been able to get into the last one. I'll finish it one day.

Lord of the Rings Outlander Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet
I have most of Edward Rutherford’s books. His books are not series but they are long enough they could be if divided by centuries or family stories.
I discovered the Outlander series after watching the first episode of the tv series.
All are historical fiction, except Lord of the Rings.

Hard to pick, but I think Lisbeth Salander stands out to me. And I enjoy the Sookie Stackhouse series. At the time, I loved Twilight, it was the right series for my phase of life then.
Oh yea Stephanie Plum too...her character is very close to my real life world!

The Rebus novels by Ian Rankin are probably my favourite. The Matthew Scudder books by Lawrence Block. Donna Leon's Commissario Brunetti books which are all set in Venice.
And the O.G. which started my lifelong love of police procedurals, both in books and in TV shows: Ed McBain's 87th Precinct. 😊
