I'm really glad to see other people who like young adult fiction too. Harry Potter, Elinor Brent Dyer, Helen Dore Boylston, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Jane Austen, as well as Bill Bryson, Rosamund Pilcher, Maeve Binchy, Jean Auel. Easy reading. Jodie Piccoult but they've become a bit monotonous.
I've spent most of my adult life feeling a bit guilty for still enjoying kids' stuff. But it only recently hit me that I like wholesome stories with minimal swearing, and there aren't many adult authors that don't descend into perversion and obscenity. I suppose there isn't much that hasn't already been done, so they're trying to be different and shocking to get sales. Maybe.

It is young adult fiction that is basically a retelling/reworking of Fairy Tales set in the future in a world that is reminiscent of Blade Runner. There are robots and space travel. The first is Cinder (somewhat based on Cinderella), then Scarlet (little red riding hood), Cress (rapunzel), Winter (Snow White). I love them so much that I bought a set for my 6th grade classroom. They would also be appropriate for middle and high school students. They are Harry Potter-ish in length.

James Patterson - Alex Cross Series Tom Clancy Vince Flynn - The Mitch Rapp Series, all about the CIA and covert operations. I was heartbroken when he passed away. The guy that took over writing the series….. it just doesn’t have the same vibe.

Sarah J. Maas (ACOTAR, Throne of Glass, Crescent City) Susan Dennard's Truthwitch series Jay Kristoff's Nevernight series & Empire of the Vampire Jessica Townsend's Nevermoor series - similar to HP, but still in process of releasing all the books
Mostly YA for me and these are the ones I read annually or right before another book is released in the series.

I don't really read series much (I don't like reading about the same characters over and over again) but I'm on book 2 of the Sweet Pea trilogy by C J Skuse at the moment and enjoying it. Described as a cross between Bridget Jones and American Psycho it's very entertaining.

I have several, it just depends on my mood. Harry PotterWhen I want suspense/death/intense: Patricia Cornwall ~ Kay Scarpetta Series (The first 10 or 12 only) - Yes, I am so angry at how she ruined Scarpetta, and even Marino & Lucy (who I always thought was a brat)Light mystery: Sue Grafton ~ Kinsey Milhone Series - loved this series! I was so afraid Grafton was going to pass away before she hit Z, and thankfully she made it.
Somewhere between the two: James Patterson ~ Alex Cross SeriesParanormal/Romance: Kay Hooper ~ Bishop/Special Crimes Unit SeriesA more involved reading: Diana Galbadon ~ The Outlander SeriesComplete fluff: Janet Evanovich ~ Stephanie Plum Series (the earlier ones are definitely better) - I also hated that she couldn't pick btwn Ranger & Morelli, and once she introduced that damn monkey, I was like "peace out."

The Cormoran Strike detective series by Robert Galbraith (a.k.a J. K Rowlings) Same! I can't wait for Book 7 to come out in September! I adored the first five, but that last one was a giant slog. I couldn’t wait for it to end. I think that her editor really needed to get in there and clean that thing up. A few I haven’t seen here: Karin Slaughter Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series Tana French James Lee Burke’s Dave Robicheaux series Alan Bradley’s The Sweetness in the Bottom of the Pie Laurie R. King’s The Beekeeper’s Apprentice Sherlock Holmes, of course!

Its got romance and action and characters you care about. There are several facebook groups for her rabid fans but be careful not to join the spoiler group until you've finished reading!

I really enjoyed The Greek Village series by Sara Alexi. Just checked Amazon and am notified that there are two books of the 19 available that I haven't bought yet...okay then, off to purchase!
Jack Reacher
The Welsh Princes trilogy by Sharon Penman
Not a series as such as they are actual travel diaries but I've read pretty much all of Dervla Murphy's travel books. I travelled the world with her words from the comfort of my armchair.

Wait, I thought she only published through Y? She did only publish through Y. Her family said Sue Grafton would not have wanted a ghostwriter to write Z so the series is ended with Y.

Thought of another one………
S.T. Abby - The MindF**k Series
This series was raved about on Facebook’s Group - “Psychological Thriller Readers”. The covers of the books turned me off but after sooo many “raves” I looked into the descriptions of each book more. If you liked the Dexter television series, these books might be for you. ALL 5 books were 5 Stars for me.

I thought I remembered that correctly because I read a headline that said “The alphabet ends at Y” and knew right away that Sue Grafton must have passed. Thank you elaine and mnmloveli, I just downloaded a couple of samples to try out the books you recommend.

Marie Force Gansett Island and Green Mountain series... love the way she writes these families... but they are complete and total fluff... also her treading water series.... S/O Outlander is on Netflix... i keep wanting to watch it... but feel like i should read it first... thoughts??? Not to derail this thread I like those series, but as she has gotten farther into it, it annoys me when she goes into long lists of characters who are for example, attending a gathering. It's like she can't write a new book without mentioning every single character from the previous books. Dont get me wrong, I still read them, but that bothers me!

thanks, Meg! US peas: The Faith Martin books are on Kindle Unlimited. I just got the first one and saw that 17, 18 and 19 are on there as well. they all might be. AussieMeg - do they need to be read in order? Yes they do. Each book has a stand-alone crime, but they definitely need to be read in order for the character development and stories. Humph. I got all excited thinking I'd found another mystery/crime series to read but my library doesn't have these. The DC library (which I have a card for also) has them but only in book form, and I'm definitely not going into DC to pick up a library book, not to mention driving back to return it. haha I might suggest the series to my own library.

I read a lot of series, but if I had to classify them as "favorites" I'd probably come down to:
-- Narnia -- Lord of the Rings -- Harry Potter -- Laura Ingalls Wilder -- The Tripods (John Christopher) -- Louise Penny -- Thursday Murder Club (Richard Osman) -- Mitford (Jan Karon) -- The Cat Who... (Lilian Jackson Braun)
I picked these because these are the ones that I reread regularly. Well, except for the Thursday Murder Club books...haven't re-read those because they're still new to me. My dd just introduced them to me. But I might re-read them one day.

I love the Chet and Bernie series by Spencer Quinn (pen name of Peter Abrahams). Bernie is a former detective turned PI. Chet is his k9 school drop out (there was a squirrel involved) dog and partner. What makes the books such a great series is that they are told from Chet's point of view, with usually hilarious results. They're obviously a mystery series, but are on the lighter side. They are always my go-to books!

Anything by Sarah J Maas! *A court of thorns and roses series *Throne of Glass series *Cresent City series
The Black Witch Chronicles by Laurie Forest
Harry Potter I prefer to read young adult, though I could argue that Sara J Maas isn't totally YA. When I was a librarian in a previous life I needed to be able to recommend books for my Jr. & Sr.high students and I got hooked. I read books to escape/entertainment factor, YA and fantasy fits the bill for me.

I'm HORRIBLE at finishing series... By the numbers : I'm on book #20 of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, they make me laugh, and they're comforting. Also, the Sue Grafton alphabet series, I still need to read W, X and Y so I've read 22 of them... By number of times read and reread: probably the Gordon Korman Bruno and Boots books, or Little House on the Prairie books. On the you will bury me with this book series scale: Harry Potter or maybe Outlander. I am not caught up on yet, those books are long! Series in progress... so many. Like I said, I am horrible about finishing series, but have no problem starting them... Great question

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett; I have read these multiple times and they never disappoint.
I love Anthony Horowitz and three of his series: the Sherlock Holmes series, the Hawthorne and Horowitz series, and the Susan Ryeland series.
I always read Weir, Gregory, Cromwell when a new one comes out; but honestly, they are starting the feel like the same story written over and over (and OVER) and I'm often left wondering at the end why I bothered.
