I talked to my dr about weight loss options and she's putting me on semaglutide this week. My sister just started on it and had a weird reaction when she first started and hasn't lost very much weight.
How much can I expect to lose weekly and have you had any weird side effects on it?

Will you be doing the injections? Also, do you know what dosage you are starting on? Initially I started with the tablets (Rybelsus) that you take daily in the morning before eating/drinking anything. I lost a good bit of weight on that, but in large part due to the horrendous nausea I could never get rid of. It was difficult for me to look at food, much less eat it, so I lost too much too quickly IMO. After 2 months I made the switch to injections and have had no reactions at all. With the injections I dropped about a pound a week and for the past 4 months have not lost any more weight. My total weight loss since Nov is 25 lbs. (and I have a normal A1c for the first time in over 10 years!) and am at a weight I can live with, although the doctor would like to see me loose another 5-10 lbs.
Good luck to you as you start the injections. Hopefully they will help you with the weight loss and you have no negative reactions.

Will you be doing the injections? Also, do you know what dosage you are starting on? I will be doing the injections and I'll be starting at 1000mcg/25mg/ML according to my prescription. My sister had really bad diarrhea after her first injection and has lost about 5 lbs in two weeks. Not sure how much is from the side effects or the actual drug. She says she's less hungry and has been eating healthier. I'm hoping that it will cut my cravings and that I'll eat much less than normal.

I'm hoping that it will cut my cravings and that I'll eat much less than normal. That's about the rate I lost at when I started on Rybelsus. It killed my appetite and I wasn't hungry. When I did eat, I would be full after just a few bites. Honestly, I think I lost too much too quickly because for a few weeks there I looked pretty haggard, especially in my face. DH & DD were a little concerned. Once I switched to the injections and was able to eat more normally, the weight loss tapered off to about a pound a week and my overall look improved. Now that I'm at a stable weight and at maintenance dose, I do have occasional cravings though not to the extent I did prior. I don't feel hungry all the time, don't think about food much and can't eat large portions. I could still improve at making better food choices though!

I started yesterday myself. So far no real issues, just a slight headache. I've been diagnosed with insulin resistance so I'd like to get that in check as well as lose some weight.
I think with any weight loss you are better off losing slow and steady, so just be patient if you don't see big losses right away.

I've only had nausea a couple times, most when I've eaten too much.

For the most part, my worst side effect has been sulphuric burps. I had these too (worse on the Rybelsus than on Ozempic) but haven't had the burping issue for at least 4 months now. So there is hope that once your body gets used to the medication those will cease!

However, vestibular migraines kept me dizzy and at home most of the summer so I feel like I've missed out on too many social occasions. I'm trying to avoid that again so I've decided to make Monday mornings shot day so hopefully I will feel well for the weekends. Especially with working from home, my mental health needs social interaction and to get out of the house. My sister started Wegovy about a month ago, and she's not really had any side effects.

One of my best friends has been taking the injections for about 2 months now and she got nauseous the first couple of shots but then when she started moving her shot location (from her stomach to her thigh) she quit getting nauseated. I think she looses just about a pound a week. She has told me that anything sweet that she eats makes her sick, so she has completely cut out cokes, candy and sweets. I know she also has to really focus on eating protein so she gets that before she is too full.

I'm wondering how it will affect my diet and if I will have to give up certain things due to nausea or whatever. I'm a little nervous about giving myself the shots and I may have my mom who is diabetic and a pro give them to me!

My best friend and her daughter started taking it last year and they both have lost tons of weight on it. They both had nausea in the beginning but I think that’s about it. It really took their cravings away and my friend said she just doesn’t even think about food anymore.
I may ask about it at my next dr appointment. I just hate taking any kind of medication but I really need to lose weight. Good luck! 😀

The needle is very small and sharp, it honestly doesn't even really hurt.
I take tirzepatide (mounjaro) so it's a little different, but I've lost about 10 lbs a month since starting. 29lbs so far. I have heard it is generally tolerated better by most people and tends to cause less nausea than semaglutide. It also costs more. It acts on both the pancreas and liver, not just the liver. I have insulin resistance but not full blown diabetes. I wish it would be approved for this use. I have to get it from a compounding pharmacy, and who knows how long that will be legal as Big Pharma has already gotten the legal ball rolling to shut that down. I'm gonna have to turn into a Walter White and make my own.
I'm not really nauseated, though for the first day or two my stomach is slightly unsettled.
Food doesn't sound good. I sometimes have to force myself to eat. Fatty foods upset my stomach so I skip those. No more fast food. I can eat sweet things, but I don't crave them at all and keep them to a minimum. I mostly eat bagels and hard boiled eggs and fruit, very little meat, not as much veggies as I should but some of them cause GI upset. I take vitamins. I generally eat once a day now.
Overall I feel fantastic bc food is not the focus of my life. I will say I don't take in enough calories to give me the energy to do hard workouts, so the best I can do besides my job is walking the dog (we usually do a 3 mile route). Running and lifting weights is not in the cards right now. I'm sure when I'm at more of a maintenance dose, I'll be able to eat more calories and do more strenuous activities.
I do get light headed when I stand suddenly (I have low BP) and have to take in some salt when that happens. Gatorade is a life saver. That's not a common side effect.

I had done some research (if you call Tik Tok and Facebook research ) and had herd people have less side effects injecting in their thigh so that is what I did yesterday. And my thighs are pretty meaty but I really did not feel the needle at all. Felt a bit dizzy yesterday, but if it does not get any worse than it was I can deal with it. I do think it is affecting my appetite already. I made homemade chicken noodle soup for dinner last night in case I was a bit nauseous and had some leftovers for lunch. I also grabbed a greek yogurt I was going to throw a few choc chips in for after lunch as I usually want something sweet, but have no interest in the yogurt at this point. My doctor told me I have insulin resistance after running all my bloodwork, and never said I have diabetes...but I know the pharmacy had to talk to him before filling my script and I'm not sure what was said at that point. My fasting blood sugar is always around 120, which I think some doctors would classify as diabetic, but my A1C came back as 5.4 and the reference says <5.7 is consistent with absence of diabetes. But people on Facebook were saying Ozempic is no longer covered by insurance unless you have diabetes and mine was covered by insurance. Just hope it continues to be. I'm very tired today and I've heard electrolytes should help with that. But I am going to have to choke down this Liquid IV because it is so salty.

I really hope that it will take the food cravings away because I have a very unhealthy obsession with them and it's really the cause of my weight gain since my divorce. Feeling low- go to food! Celebrating- go to food! I lost 30 pounds on WW last year but hated it because I was restricted and I gained it all back. I'm just hoping something will replace the desire to eat and replace it with something healthier.

According to my Dr, I'm pre-diabetic but I'm not sure what my A1C is for sure. I didn't even attempt to run this through my insurance but my sister shared that she gets it at a compounding pharmacy and it's only $100 per month so if I scrimp a little bit, I can afford that. It's much cheaper than I thought it would be actually.

As you begin to lose weight, pay attention to other conditions you are on medication for. If you lose a good deal your other dosages may need adjusting. I have been on BP medicine for 15+ years, with my dosage increasing over the years as I gained more weight. Around the 2 month mark on semaglutide, I started having symptoms of low blood pressure. Over the next 3 months they reduced my BP medication (Valsartin/Hctz) dosage 3 times! I went from 360/25 to 80 (with no HCTZ)!!!

heckofagal I cannot tolerate that Liquid IV, it's so disgusting! It's like ten salt packets in one Crystal Light. Gatorade only for me, it's not too sweet and not as salty. Or I put salt on a hard boiled egg.

I have had slight nausea problems all along, but after my last increase in dose (yep, you have to go up from time to time for it to really keep working), I had problems that kept me close to the bathroom. My pharmacy couldn't get it for a few weeks, and after the break and starting back, I haven't had any problems, other than sulfur burp (which anti-gas medication handles). Any stomach problems are at their worst the 2nd day after taking the medicine, so if I take it Sunday night, my worst day is Tuesday. Burps are worse around day 5-6, if they occur at all - it isn't every week. I do get light headed when I stand suddenly (I have low BP) and have to take in some salt when that happens. Gatorade is a life saver. That's not a common side effect. This is important to note. As you begin to lose weight, pay attention to other conditions you are on medication for. I do take meds for my BP. I also take meds for hypothyroidism. I was having hyper symptoms so we lowered my dose 5-6 months ago and that is what set off a horrible period of Vestibular Migraines for a few months (fluctuating thyroid has always had that effect). I'm hoping my thyroid treatment is not affected.

Weight loss depends on many things, including how much you weigh and how you modify your eating.
My cousin was about 100 lbs overweight. She started the shots several months ago and also began eating two meals/day instead of 3 plus snacks. She was pretty nauseous in the early weeks. I remember her becoming concerned about losing too much weight too quickly early on. During the first couple of weeks she was averaging one pound per day and then it slowed down a bit.
At this point she has lost at least 50 lbs. and is continuing with the shots. I don't know how it affects everyone, but I thought I'd let you know how things went for her.

I have been in for 3 months and lost just shy (.4 lbs!) of 30 pounds.
I track all that I eat and my goal is to eat under 1600 calories a day. I have no issue with that now! I also try to eat about 100+ grams of protein. My nutritionist said that was very important-to track and make sure you are eating stung healthy overall (but there are still times I eat things like fries or ice cream!)
My biggest side effect has been some constipation. I have to make sure I eat salad, fruit, and veggies regularly. I eat a pear about every day along to keep things moving.

Semaglutide did not work for me. I have heard that 10-13% of people are considered non-responders. I was on it for 4 months and did get to the max dose. Such a bummer!
I had nausea at times, but they prescribed anti-nausea meds which helped a lot. Hopefully you can get those if nausea becomes an issue!
Side note: Just started tirzepatide (Monjouro) and already feel like it's going to be better for me. I have 40 lbs to lose. Good luck to all of us!

I have been on it since March of this year. I was very lucky and had minimal side effects. I was nauseous for about 1 day after eating a few slices of pizza on vacation. I do have constipation but that was an issue before starting Ozempic. I have lost about 60 pounds so far. I am on 1mg right now. I am also a type 2, insulin dependent diabetic and also have some severe cardiac issues. I am hoping the medication will also help with my cardiac issues.
I don't have much of an appetite since taking the medication. I do try eat lot of protein or drink a protein shake. I also go to Planet Fitness 3 to 4 times a week. I walk on the treadmill and use the weight machines. My dr is quite pleased with the results.

I lost 6.4 pounds my first week, but after that I averaged about 7-8 pounds a month. I’m down about 45 pounds total.
My husband started just over a month ago, and he lost 4.2 the first week. (He’s down 10 now.)
I haven’t had any real side effects… occasional nausea (but never vomiting) when I’m not eating enough protein, and some fatigue the day or two after my shot.
Good luck!

Did any of you notice any side effects with alcohol? I'm a wine drinker and wondered how it would go with the medication.

I am a type 2 diabetic after being pre-diabetic for 25+ years. I just started month 4 and the second month at the full dose. I’ve lost 25 pounds so far. My A1C dropped drastically even before I got to the full dose. If you get too nauseous you out can try injecting in your thigh instead of stomach. I also find focusing on getting protein in first and try to get 100 grams a day and plenty of water. If you don’t like the liquid iv, try drip drop — it doesn’t taste quite as salty as the liquid iv. Kinderlyte also works well and does t taste bad.
