We're discussing this at our house right now, because we're giving something to someone & they said they would come over at "around 2PM" to pick it up. They need help loading it, so we're kind of all keeping an eye out for them. And at this point it's 2:28. So we're discussing whether or not 2:28 still falls within "around 2:00" or not, LOL! I think maybe they aren't home & it's taking them longer to get here than expected. And I have no plans to go out right now anyway, so it's no big deal. But now I'm curious what others imagine when someone says "around" such and such a time. For me, I think I'd go with 15 minutes before or after the time, for a total time period of half an hour. What say all of you? (Note: my post originally said "about" instead of "around". But then I double-checked & realized I had it wrong! )

I would be antsy by now. I would expect 10 minutes before or 10 minutes after.

For me, about 2pm would be an hour either way BUT, if I was the person picking up I would have been there at 2pm OR in touch with you this morning to narrow down the time once I know what the rest of my afternoon is shaping up like.

My kids are antsy because I called to them around 1:50 & told them to be ready in case we needed help getting the furniture into their truck. And they're now sitting around, twiddling their thumbs, & giving me the stink eye.

Somewhere between 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after. Like, I plan to be at a friend’s house about 2, meaning depending on traffic, I’ll be as close to 2 as I can. If it looks like I’ll be later than that, I’ll notify them. I usually say “around” instead of “about”.

This is me as well. I won't send them a message about it until after 3pm, but if I were the one picking it up, I would have been there sometime between 1:55 & 2:05 if at all possible. And if I were going to be later, I would have sent a message.

I would think "about" would mean 10 minutes either way. "Around" maybe 30 minutes.
But I deal with people who run on "Indian time" which is a whole other thing.

Well I'll just admit that I am usually very noncommittal about time. If I said around 2, it could be I show up at 1 and it could be I show up at 3. Then again, if anyone needs me to be a certain place by a certain time, they all know me and make it abundantly clear and I respect that. But this is pretty much because I am pretty laid back. I also don't hold it against anyone when they show up at my house either.

Somewhere in the vicinity of 1:50-2:15/2:20.
By 2:45 I'd be sending a "where are you?" text.

2:50--they messaged that there was a problem at their house & that's why they aren't here. We rescheduled to give them time to deal with the issue.

To me, it would be 10-15 minutes before or after, but I know to others, it can mean a few minutes before 2 or anywhere up to 3 or even maybe a little after 3. People sometimes just don't get it that their time is not any more precious than theirs.

I'm always early for everything so if I said I'd be there "around 2:00" I'd probably be there a little before 2:00. If it was close by I *might* leave my house at 2:00, if it wouldn't get me there much later than 2:05....like if I was picking up something from my Buy Nothing group. lol.

They came at the new time---actually about 10 minutes early! And now we have one less big item sitting around that we don't want, so that's a win-win.

To me around means I don't want to say I'll be there at 2:00. I could be 10 mins past 2.

10-15 minutes before or after. 2:28 is around 2:30, not 2:00

Somewhere between 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after. Personally, I'd be within 5-10 minutes of the time I gave. But I'd give someone else a 15-minute leeway if I were waiting on them. With cell phones, it's just too easy to update someone on your status of you are running behind. That would be the polite thing to do.

Around 2 sounds to me like shoot’in for 2 but not trying to be on time. For some reason that song like anywhere from 5 minutes till 2 and a half hour later.

Or…….you could have my family! Going to lunch, “around 11”. Texts me at 10:30, leaving now. Ok I give her travel time go out to wait for her to pick me up, and it’s another 25 minutes.
Generally when I say “around” a time, I try not to be any earlier than 5 minutes before, and 15 minutes after, but my entire extended family has no concept of time. A party starting at 2 this past weekend didn’t start til 3.
My sister in law was 15 minutes late to my wedding, WITH the flower girls!

'Around' to me means 10 to 15 minutes before or after the actual time. I hate making people wait for me as much as I hate waiting for other people.
Glad they made the new time and picked up the piece of furniture!

Within 5-10 minutes. I'm not a fan of 'around' what time.. but I guess if I am traveling further than a 10 -15 minute trip... I will say Around xxx time, knowing it will be no more later that 10 minutes. And I will specifically say give or take 10 minutes..
Your scenario to me is late. That isn't 'around'.

10 minutes before or after 2.
But I have learned my lesson. If I am waiting for someone, and they give me that answer, I let them know when I will be available. If they say around 2 - I will say I am here from 1:30 to 2:30 - if you aren't able to make it then, reschedule at my convenience. Sometimes people take advantage of peoples time.
If I am legit going to be around the entire afternoon, I'll let them know, but if not - I give them the time that I am willing to wait and then I leave.
