I’ll add a vent about Christmas sentiments stamps. So many say “From our house to yours or We wish you a Merry Christmas or from all of us, etc. Those don’t work since it’s just me now. I would like to see some that say From my house…., I wish you a….. or from me to you. Not everyone has a SO or kids still at home. I so agree, from one one person household to another, I totally understand. joblackford. IMHO the Hanukkah example they show is a bit of a cop out for sure. However, since they turn just about every holiday rainbow-ish, I can't necessarily call them out for it with this set, KWIM? I sure would have liked to see them make more of an effort, but most importantly, I am still pretty upset about their "sorry is we offended you" PM to me. #clueless I did end up ordering the set earlier in the week. It is likely my last purchase from them for a long time. I am a very regular customer there, so it will save me a ton of $$$.

Definitely understand your feelings about their "apology" Selfishly I'm happy you got the set because I'm looking forward to seeing the cards you make with it. I've been disillusioned with SSS for a while and I'm not a huge fan of stamping lately, so I should probably just get a paper collection from scrapbook dot com. (I've convinced myself while typing)

joblackford , I’ve offered to loan you stuff before since we’re so close to one another but you’ve not taken me up on it! Once I’ve finished Hanukkah cards for this year, I am happy to mail them out to you to use for a few months so you can stock upon all the Hanukkah stuff for next year’s donation cards. Just holler any time. My order is supposed to arrive on Monday. Also, wanna share what papers you decided to order?

I’ll probably take you up on that, even if it’s next January to prep ahead like you said. (The truth is I have too many ideas and supplies, not enough motivation/energy to actually make all the things). I was going to order the Colorplay/Photoplay collection, hadn’t realized that it was a 2020 release, out of stock in a lot of places. I’ve signed up for a restock notice on that on scrapbook dot com (I prefer them), and I have the CP paper pack on my wishlist, also considering the Lawn Fawn die that just says Happy Hanukkah. I’m trying to remind myself that I could make cards without much in the way of fancy supplies. I think the CP papers and the die would be plenty to make a few dozen cards. Or I could print sentiments on my computer and just use the paper.

So I have a question for you all. If you are planning on making Hanukkah cards for Jewish friends, is there anything I can do to help?
This whole thing has genuinely surprised me. It has also opened my eyes to how little people in general know about traditions and icons important to Jews. We've always been bombarded with Christmas and Christianity, but y'all have not been bombarded with Jewish culture, KWIM?
LMK if I can help. Really.

I finally got to watch Daniel West’s video for the Catherine Pooler Hanukkah supplies. The video is mellow to the point of mind numbing, mostly stamping and coloring, almost all of the card making is in the last 5 minutes. But it was a good opportunity to see the collection a little more closely and to give them positive feedback. www.youtube.com/live/3yptKki7QFI?si=HW-rC9bsOnjZJODm

Photoplay’s Hanukkah collection just came back into stock at Scrapbook dot com. It was still out of stock when I looked a couple of hours ago so I’m glad I procrastinated shopping. www.scrapbook.com/store/ppp-hnk2419.html

So I have a question for you all. If you are planning on making Hanukkah cards for Jewish friends, is there anything I can do to help? I would love some tips and ideas. I have a single wooden stamp from Craftsmart which says Happy Hanukkah and has two stars and a menorah and a vague idea that blue and maybe yellow are appropriate colours but that's about it. I can use cut files if I know what to look for but I'm unlikely to find themed paper locally.

I can use cut files if I know what to look for but I'm unlikely to find themed paper locally. Color wise, anything is perfectly fine. Americans have decided to use blue and white for Hanukkah for no other reason than those are the colors of the Israeli flag. Usually silver is added in but gold is perfectly acceptable, as are entirely different colors. Honest. I did a search on Pinterest for Hanukkah cards last night and put some on a board, I’ll link it below. To be honest, there really isn’t a right or wrong, but please refrain from using a Star of David on a Christmas card, ok? 😉 I tried to save a few ideas that can be used even if one doesn’t have any Hanukkah specific dies/stamps/sentiments. Hanukkah is actually a minor Jewish holiday. It only became a “thing” when Christmas became so commercialized after WW2. Messages of love and light are typically lovely non-religious phrases to use if you want to move away from a simple Happy Hanukkah. The miracle of Hanukkah is that the one day’s worth of lamp oil lasted for 8 days and nights (therefore the messages of light). There are some examples on the board I’ll link. That said, I’d do a search for homemade Hanukkah cards on Pinterest and see what strikes your fancy! This should be the link but if it’s not, let me know. I’m on my phone and it may move over wonky. pin.it/1lodf57I hope this helps a bit. Let me know if you have more specific questions. Also, I believe that leeny is also Jewish and perhaps she has some thoughts to add?

Hanukkah is actually a minor Jewish holiday. I am aware of this and I wonder whether Hannukah cards might be offensive to some for this very reason -- sort of emphasizing a minor holiday as an also-ran sort of thing. So, is it safe to assume that someone would appreciate a happy Hannukah card just because they are Jewish?

Thank you MichyM - that's helpful and to follow along with Shakti's question -is there another holiday that cards would be appropriate for also.

My impression, correct me if I'm wrong, is that many people who identify as Jewish celebrate Hanukkah even if they're not particularly/at all religious, in much the same way that many people who were raised in a Christian tradition/culture but never actually went to church (like myself) celebrate Christmas.

If you would like to send cards to your Jewish friends in other occasions, Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year) and/or Passover would be appropriate holidays to do so. That said, I can’t tell you the last time I sent or received cards for those occassions.

My Hanukkah supplies arrived today, along with a few other things! The CP papers are lovely. And I love my new Lawn Fawn word die, so bold and simple so I can make a bunch of cards quickly and easily. It really only fits landscape-wise on an A2 though, which simplifies the decision making process. I happened to get the Simon Hurley candle die with my order and did a quick sample and then I wondered, could I use it for Hanukkah too. Does this read too much as birthday candles? Or since it's clearly not trying to be the correct number of candles for a menorah does it work? I'd appreciate your opinion MichyM Question by jo.blackford, on Flickr

I went to Michael's at lunch and got a sheet of their one double-sided Hannukah 12x12 paper and their Hannukah sticker pack. They also had Rosh Hashanah and Diwali stickers.
Darn autocomplete.

I also have the CP patterned paper and need to start playing with it. This coming week will be Hanukkah cards week I’d love to come up with a few designs that I can “Mass produce” for donation without getting bored from making the same design! I’m kind of on the fence with the amount of candles on your card joblackford, but, as you all must be aware of by now, I’m a particular person. I know…I know 🤨 I think maybe using a darker blue might be more successful in conveying the Hanukkah intent? I was scrolling through Hanukkah inspiration again on different manufacturers sites and noticed that one of the designers used 8 candles to replicate a Hanukkah menorah. A Hanukkah menorah has 9 candles. While I understand that they were representing the eight nights of Hanukkah, they did not include the most important candle, the Shamash, which is used to light the nightly candles. I appreciate the questions and desire to be respectful a whole lot! I hope other Jews might chime in as well. I’d really like to know others’ thoughts on Hanukkah cards.

I can easily mask this stencil or crop the panel to get 9 candles but I thought if many more than 9 was OK it would make for a relatively easy card to mass produce. I think it needs more of *something* anyway. Not sure if editing the subject of this thread to mention Hanukkah would get more eyes and opinions on it.

I am always appreciative of any greeting I receive around the holidays and especially grateful when those who really know me take the time to send Hanukkah greetings. I just wish if people are going to even try to create something for sale for any holiday other than Christian holidays, they research before putting their products out there. As a side note - love this page Hanukkah FailsShakti - was that Recollections brand paper and embellishments?

The stickers definitely were; the paper probably. And the sticker set is much bigger than it looked in the store. I think the Rosh Hashanah one is equally extensive.
FWIW, Joann seems to have zero Judaica. Nor does HL, but that's not surprising to me.

I picked up new Hanukkah supplies for this year. I have several Jewish friends and now my dd’s boyfriend that I include in my holiday card mailing. I also look for winter and solstice-type supplies for my atheist friends.
My eyes were opened to the Hanukkah Simple stories line. Beautiful papers and I will be picking those up to keep on hand.

I started making some very basic Hanukkah cards with the ColorPlay Festival of Lights collection. This was the first batch I finished, very quick and easy, but when the sun comes out tomorrow I'll have lots more to share. The coated paper is lovely and vibrant but a bit slippery to work with. I made some more simple Hanukkah cards with the last few sheets of paper + some random gold and navy blue cardstocks. I printed my own quick sentiment to fit where I needed something on the Sheetload cards on the right. I have 4 more cards laid out to use up the scraps and then the ColorPlay papers will be all gone. I think that totals 49 cards out of the 12x12 paper pack I didn't love the coated texture of the paper but it worked for quick, bold cards. Oct 22x Hanukkah cards by jo.blackford, on Flickr
