There is another thread about this where peas have the residents of this small town in thoughts. That’s fine but it’s not going to do a damn thing. It’s certainly not helping the dead. If this is true that the guy was treated at a mental facility then he should have been allowed near any guns. And it gets even better as you read the article. He was trained by our military. This country has got to get over this goddamn love affair with guns that vast majority of gun owners don’t even need. The number of dead seems to be around 20. Twenty people who were just doing their thing are now dead because some angry guy white went a shooting spree. Fuck him and fuck this country for continuing to allow this to happen. From AP. “ Firearms instructor treated at mental health facility is person of interest in Maine shooting: cops””LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — The man identified as a person of interest in a mass killing in Maine is a firearms instructor trained by the military and was recently committed to a mental health facility, according to a state police bulletin. The police intelligence bulletin, reviewed by The Associated Press, was being circulated to law enforcement officials on Wednesday night after the shootings that left at least 16 people dead. The bulletin says the man, Robert Card, had been trained as a firearms instructor at a U.S. Army Reserve training facility in Maine. The document says Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023. It did not provide specific details about his treatment or condition.” The document also said Card had reported hearing voices and had threatened to carry out a shooting at the military training base in Saco, Maine. Card was being sought by police as a person of interest in Wednesday’s shootings. A telephone number listed for Card in public records was not in service. Lewiston Police confirmed in a Facebook post that Card was a person of interest in the shooting and said he should be considered armed and dangerous. The shootings at a bowling alley and a bar in Lewiston on Wednesday night killed at least 16 people and engulfed the state’s second-largest city in chaos. The suspect remained at large as authorities ordered residents and business owners to stay inside and off the streets.“ x.com/ap/status/1717387972272640455?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nw

From an outsider (Canadian) looking in - this is exactly why gun reform needs to happen. Notice how it is mostly all angry white guys with guns? Nobody wants to take all the guns away - they want checks and balances in place so guys like this one (with on the books mental health treatment) doesn't get any guns.

The first paragraph. It was totally unnecessary. She was probably pissed off that she didn't get to start the first thread and as usual starts a second one because it's always all about her. I mean the horror of not being able to start her bulletin board of twitter posts with zero conversation thread.

The feelings of anger are valid. This country is a mess. Nothing will change. Tomorrow will be another mass shooting. Then another. It won't change until we have a more progressive majority in office. That's the truth. This country loves guns and "freedom" more than human lives. The reality is that we have less freedom because there are so many guns. You can't even go to a bowling alley or a restaurant or a school or a movie theater without risk of getting gunned down. How is that freedom? I'm angry. We should all be angry!

Authorities probably didn’t know he was in a mental facility or had guns until his face was on the news and someone who knows him contacted police to tell them who he was. However, there is still the point that we should have more laws that limit gun ownership.

The fact somebody knew he was psychotic and threatening to shoot up a reserve base means a legal duty to warn. Somebody fucked up.
ETA: Of course, there probably aren’t any laws on the books in Maine where a psychotic person's guns can be seized. Almighty 2A

It won't change until we have a more progressive majority in office. This is part of it but honestly, the Supreme Court is the biggest obstacle in making any change. As long as the justices hang on until they are old, senile and drooling, there's no hope. We're stuck with the 3 trump justices for a minimum of 40 years.

I see there is some grousing because a second thread was started. To be clear if you want to do the thoughts and prayers route the other thread is for you. If you want to vent your anger and frustration because of the lack of action to stop this madness this is the thread for you. There is somewhat good news. ABC7 News… ”Maine Gov. Janet Mills said during a news conference Thursday morning that 18 were killed and 13 injured in the incidents as police are still searching for suspect Robert Card.” x.com/abc7newsbayarea/status/1717558271328878647?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nw

David Hogg posted this.. ”Republicans do not give a single fuck about stopping crime or protecting our communities. They are arming the very terrorists who are slaughtering children and our country.” Here is a response that perfectly, IMO, shows the mindset of some and why it’s hard to make any headway of getting rid of guns tgat shoukd not be allowed in our streets. KN posted the response below which started a thread/discussion KB ”It’s not the guns.” Responses #1 “Then what is it??? Why isn’t this happening in other countries regularly like it does here if it’s not the guns? You and I both know why, though I don’t expect you to admit it.” KB “Other countries have plenty of violent crime. AR15’s account for a small amount of violent crime in the USA. This conversation is pointless though, because there are so many guns in the USA now, they are never going away. There is no way to effectively ban them and/or confiscate them. So fascist leftists will have to think of another solution other than more gun control.” Responses #1 “And what is the solution being offered from the gun worshipping right exactly? More “thoughts and prayers” How’s that worked so far? 🙄” KB “Fortunately the right is making great progress for 2A rights. Most states have constitutional carry now. Since over 90% of mass shootings occur in gun free zones, probably would be a good idea to let people carry everywhere. Bad guys are carrying everywhere whether there is a sign or not.” Responder #2 “But 90% of mass shootings do not occur in gun free zones. It is also an exclusive US problem that the rest of the world solved by banning guns or heavily controlling access. Cause and effect and you refuse to acknowledge either.” KB “Actually, yea they do. Except when you include gang violence into the stats, but that just proves other points that gun laws don’t work. And the USA has so many guns, they will never be effectively banned or confiscated. You’ll always have armed criminals and everyone else who can’t afford private security will be left defenseless. The Reality of the situation is guns aren’t going anywhere, you have no choice but to find other solutions other than more laws and control.”

It does feel like we are doomed. I have to fight with those feelings though. They want us to give up. But we all have to keep fighting and get out there and vote for every election. Because our votes matter, especially in our own communities. I urge everyone to stream their county board and city government meetings if they are available on line. Extreme right wing agendas are in full swing at every level of government. It really is scary times.

There is no “safe place” in this country anymore because of guns. They’re everywhere and what happened in Maine can happen on a street near any of us, or on our street. Maybe if people fully understood this they would be more inclined to, you know, actually do something about it. The Recount… ”Our small state of just 1.3 million people has long been known as one of the safest states in the nation. This attack strikes at the very heart of who we are & the values we hold dear for this precious place we call home.” — Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) on the Lewiston shootings” x.com/therecount/status/1717562347852546298?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nw

pinklady hit the nail squarely on the head. We could have majorities in Congress, but the Supreme Court is where gun laws go to die. It doesn’t even matter if it’s your state legislature that passes restrictions. It doesn’t even matter if the reform is merely a tweak. Almost all of them get challenged in court. Every SC decision on gun laws has severe repercussions to other existing laws. Do y’all remember Bruen from last year? Politico (bolding mine): “… more than a dozen state and federal laws have been invalidated in whole or in part since the Bruen decision. Thirty percent of civil cases and nearly 4 percent of criminal cases that have cited Bruen have resulted in the invalidation of gun control provisions, among 284 total decisions addressing Second Amendment claims. This flurry of legal activity greatly outpaces the immediate aftermath of the 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, which endorsed an individual right to bear arms irrespective of service in a militia.” Note “…outpaces Heller”…as if Heller wasn’t bad enough. How did this happen? Because Bruen established a framework under which gun laws’ constitutionality will be evaluated henceforth, and one of those demands is tying the gun law to historical tradition. Yep, people…never mind that the PRESENT America is bedeviled by gun violence; if your gun law cannot find a HISTORICAL tradition to underpin it, you’re SOL. This is the reality we face. What the SC's conservative majority will uphold to their last breath is the absoluteness of the Second Amendment. Their ethos is EXPANDING gun rights, not limiting them. Will continued public pressure change the status quo? Will continuing to vote in lawmakers who maybe can effectuate change by legislating durable laws work someday? I don’t know anymore. I truly don’t. All I know is giving up is not an option.

What's sad is he told them he was hearing voices... why was he released? I guess he got the gun illegally but he should have been kept for mental care! There are very, very few hospitals to take care of people with mental health issues and even fewer beds within the facilities that exist. A friends son had to stay in the ER when dealing with mental health issues for three days until a bed opened up for him (and then he had to go to a neighboring state for an available bed). Sadly, these hospitals move people in and out as quickly as they can to free up beds for someone else. We really need to do better to make sure people are in better shape before they are released.

Look, I think we can be both personally concerned for the safety and well-being of the people directly affected by this particular mass murder (other thread) and angry as hell that there are so many guns, that gun ownership is so easy, that people with serious issues can get them, and that "more guns" is the offered solution by a lot of people. And lizacreates is also obviously 100% right -- the current Supreme Court is an impediment to getting or keeping the legal changes we need to have the country the majority of us want to live in. It's incredibly frustrating.
