This is a great summary of Trump’s attempts to interfere with the border deal and Republicans response. heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/january-26-2024Meanwhile, Trump’s attempts to destroy the bipartisan border deal, in which Democrats appear to have been willing to give away more than the Republicans out of desperate determination to fund Ukraine, are being called out for cynical politics. The news is awash today with stories condemning the Republicans for caving to the demands of a man who is, at least for now, a private citizen and who is putting his own election over the interests of the American people as he tries to keep the issue of immigration alive to exploit in the 2024 campaign. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) told his colleagues: “I didn’t come here to have the president as a boss or a candidate as a boss. I came here to pass good, solid policy…. It is immoral for me to think you looked the other way because you think this is the linchpin for President Trump to win.” Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) told Sahil Kapur and Frank Thorp V of NBC News, “I think it’s crap…. We need to get that deal done to secure the border. If they want to keep it as a campaign issue, I think they need to resign from the damn Senate.” But while Trump is apparently telling Republicans he will “fix” the border if he gets back into the White House, Greg Sargent noted yesterday in The New Republic that when Trump was in office, “[h]e too released a lot of migrants into the interior, and he couldn’t pass his immigration agenda even with unified GOP control.” And, of course, he never got Mexico to pay for his wall, as he repeatedly claimed he would, while President Joe Biden, in contrast, got Mexico to invest $1.5 billion in “smart” border technology and to beef up its own border security. The White House has refused to abandon negotiations even as Trump trashed them. In a statement today, Biden said that negotiators have been “[w]orking around the clock, through the holidays, and over weekends,” to craft a bipartisan deal on the border, and he called out Republicans who are now trying to scuttle the bill. “What’s been negotiated would—if passed into law—be the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we’ve ever had in our country,” he said. “It would give me, as President, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed. And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law. “Further, Congress needs to finally provide the funding I requested in October to secure the border. This includes an additional 1,300 border patrol agents, 375 immigration judges, 1,600 asylum officers, and over 100 cutting-edge inspection machines to help detect and stop fentanyl at our southwest border. Securing the border through these negotiations is a win for America. For everyone who is demanding tougher border control, this is the way to do it. If you’re serious about the border crisis, pass a bipartisan bill and I will sign it.” Biden seems to be signaling that if the Republicans kill this measure, they will own the border issue, but he is not the only one making that argument. Yesterday the Wall Street Journal’s editorial board, which slants toward the right, wrote: “[G]iving up on a border security bill would be a self-inflicted GOP wound. President Biden would claim, with cause, that Republicans want border chaos as an election issue rather than solving the problem. Voter anger may over time move from Mr. Biden to the GOP, and the public will have a point. Cynical is the only word that fits Republicans panning a border deal whose details aren’t even known.”

Bullying elected officials to ignore a problem in order to use it as a campaign issue is despicable.

1. So what? You do understand the importance of giving aid to Ukraine? Right? If not then it shows your ignorance. 2. From the Washington Post “Biden is referencing a new expulsion authority senators have negotiated that would kick in on days unauthorized border crossings reach 5,000 over a five-day average, according to two people familiar with the outlines of the deal who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations. That authority would shut down most asylum screenings for migrants crossing illegally. Migrants could still apply at ports of entry, where a set number of asylum claims would need to be granted, they said. Migrants would be expelled indefinitely until crossings dipped below 3,750 per day, which would end the expulsion authority period. The deal also changes the U.S. asylum process with the goal of reducing the average time for an asylum claim to be resolved from several years to 6 months, the people said. It also raises the standard for migrants to be able to make an asylum claim in the first place. Some Republicans’ goal to dramatically curtail Biden’s use of his humanitarian parole powers for certain categories of migrants is not in the final deal, they said.” 3. The Federal Government is responsible for border protection. Not the states. Abbott overstep and the Supreme Court agreed. 4. Exactly how. Be specific. And how do you know terrorists are coming across the border? Where is your proof? 5. In 1986 when the Immigration Reform billed was passed we were told they solved the problem with this new law. And when they gave immunity to the roughly 2.9 M folks here illegally we were told they wouldn’t need to do it again. Problem was neither side fully enforced the bill. So we have the mess we have today. George W Bush wanted to pass a new immigration reform bill but members of his own Party wouldn’t support it. And the Republicans haven’t want to pass any immigration reforms since. Senate Republicans & Democrats have finally come to the conclusion something needed to be done and came up with the current bill. Problem is, which you are ignoring, is trump doesn’t want Biden to sign any immigration reform bills because if he does it becomes a win for Biden and the Republicans lose a “weapon” to use against the Democrats. trump has members in the House that are willing to give him what he wants and that is to sink any immigration reform. And you conveniently ignored this in your answer “All eyes now turn to the House, where Speaker Johnson has to decide whether his loyalty is to America first, or to Donald Trump.”. So the question becomes will the Republicans in the House work with the Senate to pass a new immigration bill or bow to trump and do nothing. 1. If the Ukraine money is not a big deal he wouldn't have left it out that he's holding protection of the border (one of his major responsibilities) hostage until he gets more billions for Ukraine. Money for Ukraine has absolutely nothing to do with Biden’s job of securing the border. 2. Biden ALREADY has the power to do all that and hasn't bothered in 3 years. 3. The federal government is responsible for border protection, but they're actively preventing it from being secure. Someone has to do it. 4. Taking down walls, demanding the razor wire be removed, going to court to stop Texas from preventing illegal border crossings, removing the remain in Mexico requirement, reinstating "catch and release" are just a few specifics of Biden actively preventing securing the border. "The arrests of individuals in the United States allegedly linked to Hezbollah’s main overseas terrorist arm, and their intelligence-collection and procurement efforts, demonstrate Hezbollah’s interest in long-term contingency planning activities here in the homeland.” -FBI director Chris Wray in a congressional hearing November 15 & FBI Director Christopher Wray and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas are warning that terrorists are currently a "heightened threat" including at the southern border. 5. From Politico: Late Thursday, Trump released a statement saying the nation is “better off not making a deal” unless it’s “perfect,” and he called the current Senate effort “meaningless.” Marco Rubio @marcorubio Biden people admit they don’t want to secure the border What they want is bipartisan support for a Senate bill they know is dead in House & that he will never enforce anyways Then he can both keep the border open AND blame House GOP for it Marco Rubio @marcorubio A “deal” will allow Biden to pretend he’s doing something about the border but it won’t solve the problem. If he won’t even enforce our existing law he is NOT going to enforce even tougher ones. I have no idea what your rambling about Ukraine is about. Marco Rubio like many of the current crop of Republicans lies and he does it a lot. You asked what President Biden has been doing the last three years. He tried following a policy the Obama Administration tried. In the big picture this policy would actually make sense when it first came about but unfortunately circumstances show it’s not viable. Migrants looking for a new home is not just a United States problem but a worldwide problem. Look around and answer the question how to stop migrants from leaving their country. Just think of how less of a problem immigration would be if that one problem could be solved. Oh and fully enforce immigration laws. The Republicans go on and on and on and on about “closing” the southern border. Their solution was building dumpster don’s wall. Problem is this country has 4 borders. Surely the Republicans aren’t THAT dumb they think if they put the fence across the southern border that it will stop migrants from coming completely and that they won’t try and come through one of the other three borders? Migrants have come by boat to the Florida Keys. So are they going to build a fence around those islands? Fences along the entire east and west coast lines? Then there is the border with Canada, build yet another fence? In one of his speeches dumpster don said he was going to put an “iron dome” over the United States. I’m wondering if he thinks the iron dome is an actual dome. You still haven’t addressed the elephant in the room that the Republicans, especially dumpster don and House Republicans, don’t want any kind of immigration reform passed because it takes away a “weapon” they can use against the Democrats.

I did notice this… Greg Sargent… ”A strange thing about media coverage of Trump and the border: It largely erases his term as president. He didn't fix anything. He too released many migrants. He couldn't get his own plan passed *with unified GOP control.* My new piece gets into this:” ”Here's what I'm trying to suggest: There is a deeper indictment to be offered of the GOP tanking the border talks at Trump's demand beyond saying "they want chaos." MAGA also opposes fixing the system in ways that facilitate migration, which is their ultimate nightmare.” A random response with a lot of truth in it IMO ”A strange thing about the MAGA media bubble & its deliberately misinformed audience. Facts don’t matter. Truth is irrelevant. The lies and propaganda are all that do matter-and they are delivered as the gospel truth.” From the article in the link…. ”Either way, the key question is this: What exactly are Trump, most Senate Republicans, and the House GOP rejecting as insufficient in terms of “securing the border”? At the center of the talks is the $14 billion that Biden has asked for to fund new border enforcement agents, expanded detention, expedited consideration of asylum claims, and other border security measures. Republicans initially said that’s not enough without major policy changes. So Democrats agreed to many policy concessions. Negotiators have reportedly agreed on provisions such as raising the bar to qualify for asylum, more expedited removal of some migrants from the interior, and a trigger that effectively closes down asylum seeking if border encounters climb too high. I can add more: Negotiators have also been discussing the creation of a whole new process for administrations to remove asylum-seekers who fail their initial screening, according to sources close to the talks. What’s more, due to that and other policy changes on the table, the emerging deal would end up spending substantially more money on immigration enforcement than even what Biden has requested, according to the sources. That Republicans reject all these serious new restrictions—including much more border security spending—as insufficient shows how extreme the MAGA-fied GOP posture on this issue has become. To illustrate the point, consider that Republicans have also pushed to gut Biden’s parole programs, which admit tens of thousands monthly who apply from abroad. Democrats have rejected this, angering Republicans who insist those programs abuse Biden’s parole authority. But it’s important to understand why Democrats are rejecting this. These parole programs provide alternative legal pathways for migrants to enter the United States by securing a sponsor from afar and then flying into the country. Rather than requiring them to come to the border and seek asylum, this creates an orderly, rules-bound way to enter instead. This is a crucial innovation under Biden: The idea is to shift incentives away from the very sort of migration—crossing the border and then requesting asylum—that is creating the strains on the border infrastructure that Republicans claim to fear and loathe.” You can read the entire article here… x.com/gregtsargent/status/1750857724898816103?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nw

Yes, you do. You've already previously responded to it. Whatever you want to deflect with doesn't change the fact that Biden doesn't need a "deal" to secure the border. He already HAS that power. He's not only CHOOSING not to do it, he's actively preventing it from being done. No, I didn't. The razor wire seems to be working, as shown by Dan Patrick yesterday. An area usually covered by thousands of illegal immigrants was COMPLETELY empty of illegal immigrants. Yes, I did. I did when I quoted Marco Rubio: "Biden people admit they don’t want to secure the border What they want is bipartisan support for a Senate bill they know is dead in House & that he will never enforce anyways Then he can both keep the border open AND blame House GOP for it." Marco Rubio "A “deal” will allow Biden to pretend he’s doing something about the border but it won’t solve the problem. I believe this is called kicking the can down the road. Here is a statement from Mike Johnson. His response to any possible legislation is for the President to take “executive action”. The problem with executive action is the next president can overturn it. It’s better for the country to actually have legislation in place that can’t be overturn by a whim.
The very fact he doesn’t want to work with the Senate to come up with any immigration legislation is proof the Republicans in the House don’t want it. The fact is very few if any legislation that originates in one chamber is accepted/supported as is. There is discussion and compromise. Johnson is clearly not interested in doing this. Because again, they don’t want it.
“My statement on President Biden's endorsement of the Senate border deal:
President Biden falsely claimed yesterday he needs Congress to pass a new law to allow him to close the southern border, but he knows that is untrue.
As I explained to him in a letter late last year, and have specifically reiterated to him on multiple occasions since, he can and must take executive action immediately to reverse the catastrophe he has created.
The Immigration and Nationality Act coupled with recent Supreme Court precedent give him ‘ample authority’ to ‘suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.’
As my letter stated, President Biden can begin to secure the border by ending catch-and-release, ceasing exploitation of parole authority, reinstating the Remain in Mexico program, expanding the use of expedited removal authority, and renewing construction of the border wall. The President must start by using the broad legal authority he already possesses to reclaim our nation's sovereignty and end the mass release of illegal aliens into our country.
According to reports, the Senate's pending proposal would expressly allow as many as 150,000 illegal crossings each month (1.8 million per year) before any new ‘shutdown’ authority could be used. At that point, America will have already been surrendered.

Exactly. If Biden won’t even enforce our existing law he is NOT going to enforce even tougher ones. Your ignorance is showing again. It's common sense. If Biden has the ability to do something and not only chooses not to do it, but prevents anyone else from doing it, then he very clearly wants it that way.

Oh I do but to be honest there comes a point when it becomes clear either you can’t or won’t see what is clearly evident. Explain to me why Johnson does not want to work with the Senate to come up with an immigration reform bill that the Republicans have claimed is needed? Isn’t that Congress ’s job to write and pass legislation that a president will either sign or veto? So far President Biden said he will sign it. The Senate took the time to “hammer” out a bill. So why is Johnson not doing the job he was elected to do? I mean if you can just say the President can do it by executive order then why do we need Congress? Boy just think of the taxpayers money we would save if we dumped Congress. They are there for a reason and the Republicans in the House are choosing not to do what they were elected to do. Isn’t that dereliction of duty on their part? Who was that Republican in the House that ranted on the House floor that since the Republicans in the House have had the majority they have done nothing to run in? What’s name? Chip or Chips? I have to say not taking up immigration reform and punting by saying the President can do it by executive order is kind of proving what Chip was ranting about on the House Floor.

I have to say not taking up immigration reform and punting by saying the President can do it by executive order is kind of proving what Chip was ranting about on the House Floor. When the only response you have is personal attacks, you've got nothing. No, you obviously do not. Yes, that is where YOU are right now. He already explained it. FFS, you even posted his explanation in your post that I responded "exactly" to. As you said, you can’t or won’t see what is clearly evident. You didn’t address this…. “The Senate took the time to “hammer” out a bill. Isn’t that dereliction of duty on their part?”

He misspeaked and there was more...
*** At one point, Trump said, "We got Mexico to send two thousand, twenty eight thousand troops."
** In another instance, Trump said he will bring "peace through earth" instead of his traditional slogan of "peace through strength." One social media user simply wrote, "Huh?" Another verified user wrote, "As opposed thru Mars?"
** In a third case of verbal misfires, Trump appears to mispronounce the word "February."
White House correspondent Christian Datoc replied to that one, saying, "Somebody. Anybody. Under 70. For all of us..."

Here’s some good news, from today’s (Sunday) Washington Post: “ The European economy, hobbled by unfamiliar weakness in Germany, is barely growing. China is struggling to recapture its sizzle. And Japan continues to disappoint.
But in the United States, it’s a different story. Here, despite lingering consumer angst over inflation, the surprisingly strong economy is outperforming all of its major trading partners.
Since 2020, the United States has powered through a once-in-a-century pandemic, the highest inflation in 40 years and fallout from two foreign wars. Now, after posting faster annual growth last year than in 2022, the U.S. economy is quashing fears of a new recession while offering lessons for future crisis-fighting.
“The U.S. has really come out of this into a place of strength and is moving forward like covid never happened,” said Claudia Sahm, a former Federal Reserve economist who now runs an eponymous consulting firm. “We earned this; it wasn’t just a fluke.”
On Friday, President Biden hailed fresh government data showing that annual inflation over the second half of 2023 fell back to the Federal Reserve’s 2 percent target. Coupled with Thursday’s news that the economy grew by 3.1 percent over the past 12 months, the Commerce Department report showed that the United States appears to have achieved an economic soft landing.” www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/01/28/global-economy-gdp-inflation/We need all of the positive news that we can get!

trump was found to have sexually assaulted a woman and as far as this guy is concerned it’s no big deal and so what if the President of the United States sexually assaults women. Aaron Rupar. ”MARGARET BRENNAN: Trump was ordered to pay $83m to a person that a jury found he defamed after a separate jury found he sexually assaulted her. Does it give you any pause about him returning to office? SEN. JAMES LANKFORD: It doesn't” x.com/atrupar/status/1751638739585999273?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nw

”Three U.S. service members were killed and 25 injured Sunday in a one-way drone attack at a small U.S. base in northeast Jordan, near the Syria border, U.S. Central Command announced.”

The flag is to be handled with respect, not man-handled, particularly by hands we have no idea where they have been!

No more news or speculation about Trump’s syphilis hands? I saw a quick mention on SNL weekend update last week, and they used the waving Trump as b-roll on Morning Joe, but nothing else.
I do not wish sickness or stigma on the average person, but I would like to see Trump feel shame for something in his life.

I do not wish sickness or stigma on the average person, but I would like to see Trump feel shame for something in his life. I would like that, too. I believe it will never happen, as he's incapable of accepting blame for anything ("It's unfaaaair," he constantly whines). www.sciencefocus.com/the-human-body/shamelessness
