I read the thread from 2021 and LG and Samsung seem to be poor performers. I found a Samsung that has exactly what I wanted (4 ice types), snack drawer, 2 freezer drawers, about 29 cu. ft, and fit the width requirements. Our Kenmore has lasted 25 years, and still going, but I'm ready for a new one. We have wasted a lot of food and we've ruined the white door (magnets rusted). There are some great deals now, but I don't want a fridge that only lasts 5-10 years. lol.
Has Samsung been better?

LG and GE are Consumer Reports top rated French door refrigerators. The first type 3 are LG. The LG LRFXC2416D Refrigerator is top pick. About $2,200 |

I want to say it is 8-10 years with really pricey ones going up to 14 years.
But not the fridges of our childhoods that were avocado green and lasted 3 generations lol

My mom's fridge is literally from the 1940s and is still running like a champ! It's a GE. I have a Whirlpool now, it's about 5.5 years old. I don't know how my old Kitchenaid fridges are doing, they were each about 5 when I moved and left them behind.
So far I have had no issues with Whirlpool appliances.
I did discover that I don't like drawer freezers. I far prefer the side by side where part is a freezer.

We have all Samsung appliances and I’ll never buy Samsung again.
Local repair companies won’t service Samsung appliances, which means we were stuck using the Samsung technicians for our 2-year-old dishwasher that broke and our 2-year-old washing machine that broke the day after Christmas.
The tech came to the house 3 times to fix the washing machine (after quoting us $550 for the repair), and the part arrived broken all 3 times. After the part arrived broken for the 3rd time, and we had to use a laundromat as a family of 6 for almost 2 months, we bought a new washing machine. NOT a Samsung.
The Samsung technician for the dishwasher quoted us $880 to fix the machine. We said “no, thank you” and bought an LG dishwasher that day.
The Samsung repair company is atrocious. It’s impossible to schedule an appointment, repairs are extremely expensive, parts are hard to find or arrive broken, and the machines don’t last. My advice is to avoid Samsung at all costs.

We bought a GE French Door fridge new almost 2 years ago and it's been great. Granted, it's only been a couple of years but I love it.

I did discover that I don't like drawer freezers. I far prefer the side by side where part is a freezer. DH said the freezer drawer was like digging through a child’s toy box. I kept it organized with bins, but he still hated having to dig through it. We went through 2 French door fridges in 11 years. The Kitchenaid died in 6.5 yrs. Replaced it with a top of the line LG. The first 3 years the compressor was replaced twice. After the warranty was expired the ice maker motor died. We have since switched to a built in counter depth columns and are much happier. |

Because of all the tech and how they are made and being energy efficient, fridges do not last long. Yup. Planned obsolescence. Companies don't make money if they make products that last 20-30+ years. They want your money much sooner than that. |

I also have columns, meaning I have two separate appliances: one dedicated fridge and one dedicated freezer. I love mine, but you need more room than a standard fridge/freezer combo, so they’re not an easy replacement for most people unless renovating.
My fridge and freezer are each 33”, for a combined 66”. (They can be installed together or separated, but mine are together.) The counter depth keeps stuff from getting lost in the back, and the full-height appliance means that I can be way more organized. I’m also not dealing with a freezer drawer that I have to dig through or skinny doors, since each column has its own door that’s 33” wide.

As it is taller it is easier to see everything and things don’t get hidden or lost in the back. We have found that we have less food waste as well because we see and use things now.

We have a built in SubZero and honestly I’m not a huge fan. For as big as it is, it won’t fit a large pizza box or a large cookie sheet, the shelves don’t adjust to convenient depths, things like that. We have a Whirlpool French door at our lake cabin that has ice cubes, crushed ice and cold water through the door and even with all that going on it still holds WAY more than the SubZero at home. Plus each side of the shelves adjusts separately so it you have something tall like a 2 liter bottle of pop or a tall layer cake you can make it fit in there somewhere. And it fits a half sheet pan with a lid or an XL sized pizza box like a champ! Even the drawer freezer has built in sections making it easy to find what you’re looking for, including a tall narrow slot at the front that’s perfect for a couple frozen pizzas. I love that fridge so much. |

I've been wanting pellet ice, but don't really want to deal with machine for that. I was really hoping I'd have more options for ice to save my teeth. LOL

Their upright freezer was bought second hand somewhere around 1980. Both are probably energy hogs, but are going strong. |

Typing that all out seems crazy for a family of 3, but they have different uses. I've been wanting pellet ice, but don't really want to deal with machine for that. I was really hoping I'd have more options for ice to save my teeth. LOL Then I'd focus on having a fridge that fits your condiments and every day items well. We have a french door Samsung that came with the house and it's a PITA to add anything into it. It has the big drawer in the center, which I like. But then it only has 2 levels of shelves on the top. I have a hard time finding a place for my condiments because the shelves are at least 12" high and not even the full depth of the fridge. I can get 6 cartons of milk, but not my mustards! It does have the door where you can open one side and access just the condiments in the door, and then can also open it up to get into the entire fridge. I like that feature more than I would have thought. IMO, they are all problematic. Some will last forever without ever thinking of it, others go in a year. It's all a cr@pshoot! |

LG makes the top rated appliances on Consumer Reports for Refrigerators, Ranges, washers, and dryers.
I think also microwaves- we love ours but I dont remember if I looked it up in CR
My dishwasher is a Bosch

Have a counter depth Samsung from 2018 and never again. Four compartment, top french door bottom two you can select functions. So far the ice maker has been repaired or replaced three times and it is having issues again. Also, the plastic bins on the door crack, barely loaded and one had a bag of spices, nothing else. Other than that it has been fine.

Wouldn't it be more efficient, in the long run, if we were not replacing them every 5 to 10 years and filling our landfills and using up more stuff to make them? I've been wanting pellet ice, but don't really want to deal with machine for that. I love my nugget ice maker. I keep mine in the basement and transfer the ice to the deep freeze as it makes it. That is not without some work though! The ice is really wet as it accumulates in the machine, so I use a heavy duty salad spinner to remove as much water as I can, then I bag it and deep freeze it. I got one of my kids a smaller version nugget ice maker and she keeps it on her kitchen counter and just bags the extra ice sometimes and puts it in the refrigerator freezer - since that doesn't freeze as hard, she says you can easily 'bang' the bag on the counter to break it up more. I absolutely love my nugget ice maker! It does require some maitenance. I am a bit of a clean freak, so I sanitize mine often with a bleach solution and also de-scale. I wasn't de-scaling and that came back to bite me, but i got it going again. |

We had a Samsung for 12 years with no issues at all. We just a few weeks ago had to replace it and got an LG. So far I love it. Lots of room because of the slimline ice maker. Plus it was on sale at Best Buy with 12 months same as cash.

I had a Samsung French door stainless steel in 2012 with bells and whistles that lasted a smidgen over 5 years. The ice maker went within two years. Never again.
I replaced it with a bottom-of-the-line Whirlpool French door stainless steel in 2017. It's still going strong (hope I'm not jinxing myself). But there's fewer things to go wrong.
I think I said before--my repairman says that Samsung makes two things good--TVs and phones.
I still have my 1989 GE side by side in my garage that is 90 degrees most of the time (but 45 degrees today lol). It's still going strong.

But they don’t satisfy most modem customers. great point. i believe that too even if i'm probably in the minority that doesn't use or desire most of the new features found on new appliances. to my point, most of new appliances are computer driven. gone are days of strictly button and toggles. repair people love to say the motherboard is shot and there are no more updates or replacements. planned obsolescence. that's what happened with my washer. motherboard went out and the repair guy said it wasn't worth the time or money to replace it. time to get a new washer. same with my computer. no more IOS updating so i can't use some apps. time to get a new computer. |
