On Netflix. I just watched it, and even though it’s a little far fetched, it sure does give you some things to think about. How dependent we are on our phones and the internet. Are we prepared for another attack against our country? Who can you believe today? How long could we exist without things we take for granted - medical care, food in stores, entertainment that gets us hooked on lives that aren’t our own?
What did you think about the movie? The ending left us hanging. I didn’t think it had closure.

I watched it. I was disappointed in the ending. Frankly, I felt like it was a cop out ending.

A truly harrowing tale of being doomed to Friends reruns for the rest of eternity.

I liked it and thought the ending was perfect. Not everything was implicitly explained but I thought it addressed the current political climate. I thought it was apparent that all of the world’s superpowers joined together to take down the US.

Hated it. And I love this type of movie. Was looking forward to it. I thought the acting was bad. Didn't like any of the characters. It was slow. I didn't think it was realistic. What was up with the deer?

Hated the ending. It was like "oh we need to end this" so bam, that's it! The girl annoyed me.

Apparently the book ended abruptly so the movie was following the book.

I saw a review that warned it was strange and slow and that the end was very abrupt and unsatisfying so I suppose I watched it with different eyes. I kept expecting it to be far worse than it was and I actually winded up liking it.
I felt sad at the end, and I'm very disturbed that it will be *that easy* to take us down. And it feels prophetic.
The characters, especially Julia Roberts really annoyed me in the beginning but then I thought about it after and I felt like they played it right. People ARE annoying. And spoiled, and snotty and weird.
I think the ending was perfect too. We've seen enough Zombie apocalypse movies, we all know what's next. The distraction with the daughter finding her final episode to watch for a moment of peace, happiness was on the mark for me.

I love "end of the world" type movies and this one was so different and really creepy to me. At first I was disappointed at the ending but the more I've thought about it, the more I like it.

My Dh watched it; he really liked it. I just read the book and from talking to him and reading this thread, there are similarities, but also some pretty big differences. I liked the book but did not love it. It has an omniscient third-person narration that would not transfer to the screen, so I feel it would lose some to that fact. Two things with the book I did not like: The abrupt ending (which is a different ending than the movie) and the book had that weird male "sex" perspective that I find intrusive in some books. IDK---just seemed forced at times.

Great potential. Great build up. Extremely poor resolution. Left me feeling pissed off that I watched it.
side note: I really don’t like Julia Roberts. That may have contributed to my distaste for this one

We watched it and my husband was annoyed when I kept pointing out things that didn't make sense or were missing some context. Such a disappointment!

But what did you guys think about the *concept* of taking down our country. I get it was annoying but how did that part make you guys feel? Did it seem plausible?
And isn't it scary how vulnerable we really are if our internet/satellites are taken down?

That may have contributed to my distaste for this one She was really dislikable in this role but I think that was intentional. Ethan Hawke seemed to be kowtowing to her a lot and it seemed like she held all of the power in the relationship.

And isn't it scary how vulnerable we really are if our internet/satellites are taken down? My mind says it's not so easy to "take us down" as they portrayed in the movie. I would hope that our armed forces are prepared for something like this. But yes, it did seem possible. And many people would go off the deep end and not really THINK about what to do, they would react - possibly in the worse way.

I read this book and really didn't like it, so I'm not sure why I watched the movie. I saw the previews and thought that maybe it would be better than the book - and I thought it was. In the book everything is ambiguous - not just the ending. At least the movie had some more concrete storylines. It was definitely too long though.

I found it thought provoking as it could be something we will have to endure in the not too distant future. Who knows what will happen, hence the ending......

I don't think @zee spoiled it with her comment. At least it wouldn't have for me. The thread title does also say spoilers in it.

Apparently the book ended abruptly so the movie was following the book. I haven't watched the movie. I wouldn't describe the book as ending abruptly. I would describe it as ending where things are ambiguously falling apart. It doesn't "resolve" things but that is the point--the whole book is premised on people not being able to access full information.

I was not shocked at the end, until I realized it was the end. Then it was a “you have got to be kidding me.” Only to laugh a few minutes later.
Did some of the events, such as the weirdness with the animals, have an explanation in the book? They felt like lost-in-translation moments.
