My household has a disagreement when it comes to warming up your car in the cold weather. One says it is better to not be blowing cold air, so keep the fan on low until the air coming out is warmer, then turn up the fan. The other says to turn the fan on high right away, so the interior benefits from the not as cold air as the heater warms.
It isn’t a fight or anything, just something we disagree on and I thought it would be interesting to get the Peas take.

Personally I don't turn on the heat until there's a chance of some not-frigid air coming out of the vents. I'm already cold enough when I get in the car, and the interior always feels even colder than outside, so I don't need more cold air blowing on me.

If my car is parked outside I will put the fan on high and run the defrost. I mainly want to make sure I have clear windows. I’m not going to go out a second time to adjust the fan. If my car is parked in the garage and I just want it warm when I get in, I just start it. I probably don’t have the fan setting all that high. If my car has been in the garage, I probably won’t bother warming it and I’ll complain about how one of the things I hate most about winter is getting into a cold car.

I turn the fan on high and defrost while the car is warming up, before I am inside. If I am warming it up while driving I leave the fan on low because I don't like cold air blowing on me. It really doesn't take long at all for warm air so I am turning on the fan pretty quickly to warm up.

I should clarify - if my car was, for example, parked in a parking ramp and it was cold, I would not turn the fan up until it started blowing warm air. I hate having cold air blowing on me. In my original post I was imagining myself starting my journey from home.

I think part of the answer depends on how the heater in your car functions. Our heater must have a warm/hot car engine to provide heat. Turning it on immediately would not send heat.

It’s something my husband and I have occasional squabbles about. I like to turn on the air full blast and suffer through the transition, and he likes to start it on low. I did get a new (to me) Honda a month ago, though, and it warms up much more quickly than my other car did.

If it’s below a certain temp, my car automatically turns on the defroster full blast and the seat warmers and side mirror heaters when I start it. I turn the defroster fan down as soon as the window is defrosted because it’s loud and I don’t like the air blowing on me.
My remote start does the same.

My biggest goal when warming a cold vehicle is having a clear visibility. If you sit in a cold vehicle without a fan going, your breath will frost up the inside of your windows. I select defrost only and high fan. In my vehicle, that selection also turns on the rear window and mirror defrost that melts the ice through direct heat. When the engine is heated up and the windshield is clear, I flip the selection to AUTO and cut back on the fan.
If I have to sit in the car during that process I have heated seat and steering wheel, so pretty comfy for me, if not all my passengers...

I have no idea. My guess is that I'd let it warm up long enough that hot air would be blowing through it. I have to leave my keys in it to warm it, so that isn't going to happen. Thankfully I have a spoiled car (and me) that doesn't spend too long outside.

I vote full blast. If my car needs to be warmed up, that means the windows need to be scraped off so I'm not sitting in there. By the time I make it around the entire car, the heater is usually finally blowing warm air...

I just leave it on the desired interior temperature and let the car figure it out. I never manually adjust anything except the temperature.

I’m in So Cal so my cold is probably much different that most of your cold….but if my windows are foggy I blast the defrost with heat AND the AC button pushed. This defrosts way quicker that just heat at the windshield.
If my windows are not foggy, I drive a bit before turning in the heater so there’s no cold air is blowing at my face.

I'm a full blast kind of girl. I crank the blower up whether it's warm yet or not.

If I don't pre-heat the car before getting into it, I don't turn the fan on high until the air that is blowing is warmer than the air in the car.

My heater is used mainly to defrost my windows. And then I set the temperature in the car to between 70-72 and let the car do its thing. I remember as a kid, when we would stay late (past midnight) at my relatives house for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, my dad would go outside about 5 minutes before we would leave. He would start the car, get the heater going, and defrost the windows. The car would be nice and warm when we piled into it.

I leave my seat warmers on and turn it on for 10 minutes before I leave on really cold mornings. In the summer, I turn the AC on before I head out for lunch and the end of the day.

I don't crank the fans until the engine block starts to warm up. I don't want high blast cold air.
If I start my rig before I get it, to warm/defrost - then I crank the fan so it does blow hard, because I am not going to be in it for a while yet. My god I do love the heated seats though. I love my toasty buns!
I love that my big semi truck is warm already when I get it. It sits in the heated shop, so it is at 60º before I even start it. I'd have to plug in the block to start it otherwise, it won't start if it's cold. It will complain and smoke and chatter at anything much below 60! It flat out won't start below 40.

I think this is a matter of personal preference, honestly. The Auto setting on my car will blow on low until it warms up, and then blow higher.
It's not pleasant to be blasted with cold air but I do usually turn it up right away to get the defrost working more quickly. But I wait until the car is moving so that the air gets warm quicker.

We can turn our Jeep on remotely before getting in. If it’s below a certain temperature, the heat will come on full blast automatically. Once you get in, something (not sure what) makes the fan turn down to a normal setting. It also turns on both seat warmers. It’s fantastic!

I have an auto start - through the Ford app on my phone. I can get in my car and it seems to be blasting - or maybe it’s just my last setting I had it on when I turned it off - I don’t use it super often so I can’t remember.
I do like to wait for there to be warm air before I blast it though. And I generally use the seat warmer while I wait for that!

I don't. My car doesn't take long to warm up so I turn it on and get moving. Usually within 5 minutes or so the heat is warm.

I would do the same.

If I'm starting my car and letting it warm up while I go back inside, then I will turn the fan on higher. If for whatever reason I am in the car while it's warming, I will leave it as low as possible until it warms up.
