Teeny tiny victory, but one I figured y'all would understand my cause for celebration. As many of you know, I was laid off last month. In December, I attended our quarterly-ish in person meetings. I came across the three pages from the meeting (1 page of my notes, the agenda, and 1 page from an activity we did). I threw them out today!
Past me might have hung on to them (as it was only 3 sheets of paper), but I decided I needed to literally let it go. 🤣
This is a vast improvement over paperwork from another past job that survived several years and three (!!!) moves before I finally recycled them.

I can tell this is going to be my biggest decluttering win of the day: I was sitting in the craft room last night and DH comes in modeling a T-Shirt. Why? Because even though he has already gone through them this year, watching the video last night spoke to him about how to do it*** so he wanted to do it again. The going through his stuff voluntarily is getting to be pretty common, but this man is addicted to his t-shirts. Now, he ended up only getting rid of one, but he does love and wear all of those that are left. He even really likes the one he got rid of, but he has 2 for the team and he rarely gets to go to the MLS games so he’s giving the other to my brother. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Then we went through his hanging clothes and I have to admit, even I don’t think there is anything he should get rid of. He has really pared down most categories of his clothes. Except workout clothes, that’s the battle for us this weekend.
***When decluttering an area, say a drawer, the video (Mia Danielle posted above) mentioned the idea of select over shift. She recommended you take things out of the space, say a drawer, and instead of shifting things from your pile back into the drawer one at a time and thinking each time “do I want to keep this,” you select your favorites from the pile. This is because when you are automatically moving things over one at a time you tend check out and not be as intentional, and your brain automatically starts coming up with reasons to keep something. And I realized, this is exactly what happens and probably why I had such an issue with clutter blindness even when I thought I did an excellent job decluttering previously. I hope that perspective might help some of you!

I struggle with this concept with things that are tightly organised such as books - they need to go on the shelves by author (alphabetical) or subject (nonfiction) not by which are my favourites. I'm weeding those out by reading and donating/passing along anything that I won't absolutely re-read and also (and this applies more to my kindle but to print books also) - when a book comes up in my TBR challenge and I don't want to read it (and it's not for some good reason like it's super long and I'm looking for a shorter read at the moment), it needs to leave. 3 more binders went to the donation box and I've noticed that DH added several binders and an accordian file and some small random stuff as well - which is a BIG win anytime he decides to get rid anything.

You’re right it is. I’ve read her Decluttering at the Speed of Life book and didn’t even think about that, and do do that. The way Mia worded it just helped with my mind shift and to realize what my brain was doing, I think. Probably the bit about not picking up each piece and addressing it automatically, rather selecting from the pile. I have always done the opposite as well, which I do remember from one of Dana’s videos about no mess decluttering. After trash, what are the obvious ‘I can get rid of that’ items, the easy ones? I do that by thinking ‘what is my least favorite’ until it’s not an obvious answer anymore. I am doing the same thing with my books right now, if I don’t know 100% that I want to re-read or reference the book I’m going to make myself start reading it again. Now, all of our physical books are nonfiction, mostly health/mental health, so that makes it easier. I’ll start that once I’ve read all of my unread nonfiction books. For now the ones that stood out as probable non-keepers are in a stack on the shelf so I can just grab the next one on the pile and not have to think about it. I like that logic with your books, letting it go if it comes up and you don’t want to read it, I wonder if there is a good way to do that with my fiction books. Right now I’m doing the select over sort method and looking to see which one grabs my eye first. Maybe I’ll move it to a different folder/collection when the blurb on the back doesn’t catch my eye. A 3 strikes you’re out rule. Hmmm, something to think about thanks! He is working his declutter muscles, I bet it will snowball as he does it more and more!

Okay today was minimal decluttering. But I did finish my perfume and samples! Worked more on my lipsticks and chose another reference book to donate. Because I was finally able to convince my husband to get rid of the last home repair book since everything is available on the internet and a YouTube video will likely be more helpful anyway. He’s going into San Antonio tomorrow so he’ll drop of our boxes to donate then. Also got a lot more digital decluttering completed, including getting my inbox down to 28 annoying emails to deal with. I like to keep it to 25, but when I’m not doing great dealing with things it can get up into the hundreds which is where it was a few days ago. So that feels like a big accomplishment!
Now I’m replacing testing the perfumes daily to working on my craft room. I’m excited to see how much more I can get rid of by concentrating on using the ‘select over sort’ method. It’s all neat and organized so decluttering will be easier because I’ll know when I open a drawer I’m looking at all of my say, liquid adhesive and I can make better decisions based on that instead of wondering if I’ve got more stashed elsewhere. I decided I’m starting with the 15 or so sets of the 3-drawer Iris containers, 6 big ones and 9 small ones. At minimum I’ll do one drawer a day. Today was my purple embellishments and first I selected my obvious keeps, which was about half of it, then my obvious items to get rid of. About 25% is left and I put it in a little basket to revisit in a few days because I was trying to talk myself into keeping them. So I want some distance to be objective. I have a 3 compartment container so I’ll fill that from different drawers and on the 3rd day go back and see if I can get rid of things from the first drawer, and so on.
Also, I started shopping for DisneyWorld this summer and was super selective about what we actually needed. Less coming in = a win for me!

I finally got my grandmother’s photo albums and my mom’s quilts packed away in archival boxes/tissue. I’ve been getting DS8’s baby stuff gathered to take to a consignment sale. This morning he was saying he needs “merch” (basically toys from a stupid youtube show he watches). I told him the toy closet is officially out of space and I’m not buying him anything but he could sell some of his little kid toys to get money towards the stuff he wants. He’s actually on board. Goodbye huge paw patrol play sets! Good bye large dinosaurs and dump trucks! And cross our fingers that nothing comes in the way of tomorrow’s long overdue plan… emptying our storage unit!

I think it is amazing that you are starting him so young on this, I think he will benefit for the rest of his life due to this lesson. Good job mama, and fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Week 6-Kids’ Rooms:. Let’s get shelves done first (if appropriate). Use same method: examine, toss/save/donate, replace onto shelves. This is a good time to get rid of games with lots of missing pieces, or save for while you’re in the playroom in case the pieces are hidden there. Desk drawers: go through (or have your children if they’re older) and sort out what papers need to be saved and what can be tossed. Get rid of old magazines, old McDonald toys, toys in pieces, broken crayons, non-functional pens. make room for the stuff on top of the desk! Clothing Drawers and Closets: Again, check for current sizing. Too small? Donate to a friend’s kids, Goodwill, or homeless shelter. Torn? Can it be used for rags? Box up anything to be saved for a sibling. Label and the box and put it away now. Throw out anything not able to be repaired! Have your child try on questionable items. Before we go further. have you thought about taking curtains down, and washing? Better start now! Throw the bedspread & blanket in the wash too! Time to check under the bed for the nasties down there. This might be a good place for under-bed storage containers. Once everything is picked up off the floor, don’t forget the ceiling fans, and wash your ceiling fixtures. Now’s a good time for windows & blinds too! Don’t forget to dust, & polish any wooden furniture. If you have boxes stored in bedroom or closets make sure you have a good marker with you to mark the outside of boxes with contents. (You can do this but I find that giving the box a code number, letter or name and not marking the contents directly on the box but instead on an index card placed in your SHE box, you can at anytime change the contents of the box without writing and rewriting on the box what is inside. You can use the same methods for playrooms or play areas. Perhaps if you have a hobby room and no children, you can use this for your sewing or craft room. If you have none of the above, then take a relaxing bath. Then go over any areas that still need “doing”.

This was how I motivated my kid to downsize the stuff she no longer played with when she was younger. I routinely sold off her outgrown clothes at sales like that and told her that she could keep all of the money from the toys that sold at those sales. She was pretty quick to decide there was a lot of stuff she could let go of! RE: the large dinosaurs, I’m actually looking for some because I saw something online that they help repel deer and our rain garden at the lake needs serious help, LOL.

I have been doing some paperwork and eating lunch now. I want to do a little more paperwork before switching to cleaning/decluttering but my plan is to do some general cleaning but also get my spring clothes and décor out of the crawl space and put the Valentine's stuff in. We are going to Florida in a few weeks so I will probably need some warmer weather clothes. I can just leave the bins in my sons closet until I am ready to get the rest of the items out (it won't be warm enough for them here for quite awhile, most likely). I also have some décor that I bought and need to decide if I am keeping or not, so having the non-holiday décor to look at decide what I need/don't will be helpful in making those decisions.
I also saw someone on IG who has a "homes that heal" challenge and printed off the decluttering guidelines for that to see if that helps me stay on track.

iamkristinl16 Is that the one that has decluttering your whole house in 30-days? If so, and you get the info from her, will you please let us know if she gives more detail in what she emails you than I can see on the printout on TikTok. I tried to look for something to print but could only find the IG to comment and she’ll email you and I just got my email cleaned out so don’t want to sign up for another one! Good luck this afternoon I hope your cleaning and decluttering goes well. We are going to work on hanging up our art around the house that we took down years ago to paint. And I hope to do a little work in my craft room. Now, whether that’s dotting or decluttering, we shall have to wait and see

We did it! The storage unit is empty! A little less than 7 years ago we rented a 10x10 climate controlled unit to prep for our move. In 2020 we managed to downsize it to a 5x10 unit. Tomorrow I will go to the office and sign the vacate notice. 3 large things never even made it in the house and went straight to the garbage pile. The rest is all piled in the basement to be gone through. It will be so nice to have that all that extra money each month.

This week I got 3 more big bags and 1 huge box of kids books out. There are only three more bags left, and they WILL got out this next week.
I also put out the four Halloween pumpkins, which someone took quickly.
I put out a metal folding chair that I found in the basement (which hadn't been used in many years.
And put out a huge foldable Amazon tote(?) that a delivery person left with several small packages around holiday time. But Amazon drivers never recollected it. I tried leaving it out for them, but none recovered it. I put it out with the trash this past week, and someone took it.
I also organized the basement shelves that hold cleaners and paints. Putting like with like.
I'm feeling really good about the amount of stuff leaving the house.
And my guilt about the kids books is gone, finally.
I was thinking about how when I worked at a thrift store years ago, everything was dated, and if it didn't sell within the three week period, it was trashed on the fourth week. And that was if it even made it to the sales floor in the first place.
I also thought about how even the library trashes books sometimes.
AND.... I did choose to keep two books for myself from all those kids books. Caps For Sale and Amelia Bedelia and the Baby.
I read Caps for Sale to my two oldest hundreds of times, easily. So many times. The rhythmic listing of the cap colors as the salesman put them back on his head would lull them to sleep every time.
Amelia Bedelia and the Baby was my favorite as a very little girl. My mom read it to me. And that was why I bought it to read to my kids. They liked it, but I loved it.

I got the decluttering bug so as soon as I post this then we’ll work on hanging everything! I find freecharlie ’s list of things to do that day thread very motivating, but I’m concentrating on decluttering and organizing right now so I think if I continue posting what I’ve done at the end of the day here like I have the past week, it will serve the same purpose and hold me accountable. Which has really helped me this week. My Daily Decluttering & Organizing LogDeclutter Calendar Task: Yes, I took a nap today. But that just means it’s a day that ends in ‘Y’ Craft Room: Did a couple more small embellishment drawers, am averaging over 50% leaving my possession with these particular drawers! Make-Up & Skin Care: Finished going through lipsticks and deciding which ones look best, but didn’t get it down to 5. Some of them are so similar that I need to do an experiment and see which one wears the best. Books: I’m super excited, we finished going through all of our reference books and have them down to 28 that we are either definitely keeping or definitely going to read and expect they may end up staying. If that holds true we will have cut them in half from the non-fiction books we have remaining. Then a stack of a dozen we still want to read, but don’t think we will end up keeping. Digital Decluttering: Tons of digital decluttering this weekend, at least a couple of hours. I’m doing 5-minute blocks in different areas everyday so I wasn’t seeing the progress as quickly as I would if I concentrated only on one thing. But I find I can do more when I vary it up lil this. Anyway, I’m really starting to notice the difference now. Misc. Decluttering: Was putting something away and ended up going through a drawer of my filing cabinet and getting rid of some office supplies. And then going through all of the non-pen, post-it type office supplies and made a stack about a foot high to see if my teacher BFF wants them. Things like spirals and paper I wasn’t using, paper folders, dividers, accordion files, etc. Once I decide on a document scanner and software/filing system and implement that there will be tons more that can leave. But for now they’re well organized in attractive magazine holders and we don’t need the space, and just knowing that I’m down to basics feels amazing! We also tried using an old steam cleaner but it didn’t work so into the trash it went. I went through all of our cake decorating supplies and trimmed that down to the bare basics. The real bare basics this time! Letting go of a pair of china plates so we are down to our wedding china and Christmas china. Yes, we use both! While doing that I noticed a second set of napkin rings for our wedding china I had forgotten about so we selected our favorite and donated the others. And I decluttered a project by adding several charms to my San Antonio Spurs charm bracelet!

Thank you iamkristinl16! I like her first post. It suggests that for every delivery you get you should fill the delivery box with donations. At this point, I’d have nothing left Right now we are keeping the big boxes our monthly order comes in along with bulk TP and other large items for our donation boxes. And I need one right now and don’t have one! But we haven’t been filling the smaller ones! Ugh, I hate when I have the time and energy for something but it’s just not working out for whatever reason! Hopefully fresh eyes will help. And remember, if it doesn’t work in your freshened space you don’t have to keep it! Delta Dawn If she offers to help you, I would assume she is sincere and have a couple of projects for her to choose between. It might be best to wait for the clothes so y’all can switch over the clothes in between seasons as well. And she wouldn’t have to help with the whole storage room, maybe really take a look at what’s down there and figure out what you need help with the most. Then once she does that you’ll be able to work on it a lot easier when you have time.

Or ONLY IF SHE ASKS. Maybe that is safer.

That’s a pretty major win right there! And LavenderLayoutLady that’s quite the accomplishment too! Getting rid of our kid’s books was hard, but made a little less so because I gave them to one of DD’s elementary teachers that we both adored and know she will put them to great use. I kept a small box of favorites for myself just because I loved them or DD did. Some I kept just because I especially like the art style of the illustrations. My alarm clock crapped out last week and needed to be replaced, so it will be going in the trash tomorrow when it gets picked up. I’m really going to take some time this week to get those things posted on the Buy Nothing group. I meant to do it last week but was kind of sidelined because DH was home more than usual and it’s harder for me to stay on task when he’s at home puttering around or watching tv.

If that’s the case then personally, I’d wait until she offers since she knows you’re open to it.
