How about if I say something like “Hi, if you get bored there’s more stuff in the bedroom to get rid of. Or ONLY IF SHE ASKS. Maybe that is safer. Is she aware of how much you appreciated what she’s already done? If that’s the case then personally, I’d wait until she offers since she knows you’re open to it. I thanked her profusely and told them we were paying for their anniversary dinner and hotel night. They do so much for us so I made it clear I was open and I will just keep quiet unless she asks. Thank you for the advice. You should see the kitchen!

She got rid of 3 big kitchen garbage bags of stuff. The freezer looks like a show house. I love it so empty!

Went through a fabric cube in my craft room - there were three digital photo frames in there. I've added photos to two and set them up in the library/guestrooms. I don't know where the power cable is for the third so I'll ask DH and if we have it - I'll add photos and set it up, if not, it can leave. Fabric cube is empty and folded up.
I did find a bag of cables and adapters. I'll be handing to DH to decide if they are needed or not. Also found a camera card - I need to see if I can find a card reader.

My organizer is coming tomorrow to organize my family room and kitchen. If I weren't so exhausted from preparing for her visit, I'd be over-the-moon excited! I've made a lot of progress in the family room over the last few days, but haven't had time to get to the kitchen. So hopefully, we'll make quick(er) work of the family room and then have plenty of time to address the kitchen. Looking forward to new ideas I haven't thought of for organizing these spaces!

Daily declutter task from My Simpler Life Declutter Calendar: Go through your plastic bag/foil area. From yesterday: We have 4 knives, 8” chef’s for him, 6” chef’s for me (or maybe it’s a santuko now that I think of it), a pairing knife and some huge knife (not a cleaver) in another brand that he doesn’t want to get rid of because he says he uses but can’t remember for what . We need a bread knife for very rare occasions, but that’s one of those things that a substitute doesn’t work nearly as well. There is one in the same set as our main knives, but I have a hard time thinking of spending almost $300 on something we’ll only use a handful of times a year just because it’ll match and I find the handle super comfortable. Oh, and 4 steak knives from the Chicago Cutlery set we got when we were married in 1995. Yeah, it’s past time to replace those. What knives do you have? Any you wish you had? Any you should probably get rid of…or did yesterday?

Small update for today. Most of the things I posted yesterday on Buy Nothing are already gone, and one more thing is heading down the road today! Yeah! I still have a few more things to post but with the weather supposed to get cold again for the next few days I think I’m going to flip my schedule and go to the chiropractor and Costco today so I can fill up my gas tank when it’s 40° outside instead of 20° tomorrow. It will warm up again later this week so it might make more sense to post the rest then when people will be more likely to want to jump in the car to come grab it. I know for myself I’m more inclined to venture out for something I don’t absolutely need if it’s not miserably cold.

What knives do you have? Any you wish you had? Any you should probably get rid of…or did yesterday? too darn many but that's a hill DH apparently is willing to die on. If it was just me...we would have my chef knife, my bread knife, the tomato knife, the utility knife, the cleaver, and maybe ONE set of steak knives...and if I could find a replacement for my fruit/veg knife that DD broke - that as well. (If anyone know where I can get a knife with a long, narrow, curved blade...). The only one of these I don't use regularly is the cleaver. but at some point years ago - DH won two sets of knives that included steak knives and an additional set of steak knives - he was convinced to give one set to DS, he found a knife block for the rest at a flea market and they've been on the counter, next to my knife block - ever since. I've suggested downsizing, I've inquired as to whether they are all needed, ...he wants them to stay.

DH has one OVERSIZED knife blocks that is full - and 2 knives in my block. No he doesn't cook and while he will help prep if asked, with the exception of slicing meat, he uses my knives.

That is so funny. That somehow just owning the knives is important, I think it’s what’s referred to as self-identify clutter. I shouldn’t laugh, I have plenty of that myself. For me, it’s the hardest thing to let go of, much more than sentimental clutter. I had never heard of a fruit knife, or tomato knife for that matter, so I looked them up. Is this what you’re referring to when you say fruit knife? That’s really the only one I could find like that. I’m wondering if it has another name. When you Google they all refer to a paring knife. DH is the chef in our kitchen, so in the rare times I try and dictate what’s in there all he has to do is give me a “really?” look, you know the one, and I remember it’s his domain and (mostly) stop arguing my point. I did try with the huge knife because I don’t remember seeing him use it unless the other knives were dirty

When you Google they all refer to a paring knife. close, I think. Mine had a longer blade but yes, a thin curved blade similar to that - it's not a smooth edged blade but not super serrated either. I've been looking for a replacement for a long time but it's been elusive

Knives are definitely a 'guy' thing! A couple of weeks ago I asked DH to take my 3 largest knives to be sharpened. A few years ago he discovered a knife shop near us that is run by a group of guys who actually make some exquisite knives. They sharpen knives as well and I won't trust anyone else with mine now. Of course they did a fantastic job with my knives - and DH came home with a new handmade paring knife. I love his reasoning too. I didn't send my paring knife that go round because I don't have another that I like and wasn't sure if he'd have to leave them for a few days. He figured if he bought another one I could then send my paring knife in for sharpening! Engineer logic! I also had him take in a set of 6 Zwilling steak knives that had become dull and we were considering tossing. They said that while the serrated edge can't be sharpened, they could add an edge to the back side. Made a huge difference and now we have some everyday steak knives! We still have - and use - the first good knives we purchased in 1982. We started with a paring knife, a 6" utility knife and a 10" chef's knife. Over the years we have added more knives and all are either Zwilling, Henckels or Wüstof - and are the brands I recommend. People tend to confuse Zwilling and Henckels, but they are separate brands owned by the same company. The difference is that Zwillings are made from forged steel and made in Germany or Japan, while Henckels knives are stamped steel and made overseas (China, India, Thailand). Wüstof is forged steel and made in Germany. Those who thrift/estate sale shop should keep an eye out for those brands. A good bread knife can do double duty as a tomato knife. Just go for an 8" or 9" blade. A super comfortable handle is also a big consideration. If you don't like the feel you won't use it as much.

I'm nearly 34 and still do this... 🙈 I'm not as bad as my parents, though I do have the grocery bag full of grocery bags that I'm whittling my way through (mostly because I refuse to pay for grocery bags and I have a small collection of reusable ones to use). I would like to have matchy matchy, but DH doesn't really care, so we have a few containers we keep things in.

I LOVE that commercial **GypsyGirl** , saving it to show DH. Thanks for that because I see so few commercials these days I would have missed it for sure! We have all glass leftover containers because I like to be able to go from the freezer to the oven and I try and avoid food in plastic for health reasons in general: it’s the only reason we don’t own a sous vide machine. And I just remember using our old food containers growing up (Country Crock Chef’s Spread ftw) and my food literally tasting like plastic when we used it to microwave, you could see where the line of the food and the greatest damage was. Oh, we do have plastic containers that we use for camping only but it’s stored separately so I always forget about it. linda So glad you found one, I didn’t see that when I did a search for tomato knives! We only eat tomatoes as spaghetti and ketchup so I’ve never looked into them. Otherwise I’d totally use that as an excuse to buy the bread knife **GypsyGirl** ! But I can get my Granma’s old bread knife, it’s good quality and the handle is okay. We looked at those brands you listed and Shun, Miyabi and one other forged one I don’t remember. At Sur la Table you can test them out on a chopping block with vegetables so we both took our time with all of the chef and santuko knives and both loved the handle and feel of the Miyabi Artisan knives. Our other huge one that he doesn’t want to give up is a Zwilling or Henkles I believe, I’m one of those people who gets them confused! It was a hand me down to replace our Chicago Cutlery. Granma’s bread knife looked and felt like a Cutco knife I tested, I like their quality as well. And now that I’ve looked I really, really want the steak knives to go with my set, but our “steak knives” we purchased that match our regular utensil collection (they’re not, liars) work well for almost everything. Again, can’t justify the price for half-a-dozen uses a year. And no, I do not apply that logic to my crafting supplies!

I do live in the South, but most of the people I know well enough to know their food storage habits are matchy matchy people! 🤣 I also don't generally don't buy foods in those kinds of containers - so I don't have incoming sources of it. I did use the Hillshire ham containers when I lived in Tallahassee, but they were designed to be used for food storage after you ate the ham! They finally wore out, so I no longer have them. Like dewryce I also prefer to use glass containers for my food storage. It makes reheating things so much easier!

My sister’s in-laws are younger than my parents by probably at least a decade and sister’s MIL saved every kind of plastic container you could imagine. I’m talking 5 qt ice cream pails nested and stacked floor to ceiling in three separate stacks, margarine tubs numbering in the hundreds, same with cottage cheese containers, Cool Whip tubs, etc. I didn’t believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. It was crazy. I have a very small collection of things like that. I like to use them when I’m out in the garden to bring stuff in, or the three pound tubs from cottage cheese are the perfect size to store a batch of homemade ice cream made in the Cuisinart (I think it makes about 1.5 quarts and none of my regular containers will hold it all of it in one container, plus I don’t like holding them hostage in my freezer for something more long term like that).

She didn't cook during MY lifetime afaik (she died on my 12th birthday at 88) and had been in and out of nursing homes in between spells at home with caretakers for at least a decade. I don't remember Granny or mum saving/using them but my MIL and SILs certainly did and it took a bit of effort to break dh of the habit of saving every single container in case it might be useful.

How exciting, definitely let us know how that goes! Plus, if she has any great tips. Maybe you could live stream it? Well, the live-stream didn't happen, but great suggestion, nonetheless! My session went really well. Two organizers and I worked for three hours. I couldn't believe how much stuff they pulled out that I hadn't even touched yet, and I thought I had done such a great job of preparing for their visit. For a while, it looked like multiple bombs had gone off in my family room, but it always has to get worse before it gets better, right? We sent five bags to donation and pitched at least three (I didn't pay attention to the exact count). I have multiple bags and three baskets of items for DD to go through when she comes home for spring break. The organizers took care of sorting and boxing those items, which should really help DD when she goes through them. I'm not a quick decision maker and I sometimes have a hard time multitasking, so the hardest part for me was working on my own area of the room while both organizers worked on another section and asked me to decide on each item they uncovered. Keep? Donate? Pitch? I ultimately went with my gut, and although I got rid of a number of unread books, which I may regret, the space we created kept me motivated. We only got through the family room and didn't even touch the kitchen. I ended up finishing off the family room tonight and will start on the kitchen tomorrow. I intend to hire the organizers to come back again to suggest storage ideas for the kitchen and work on decluttering and organizing the dining room. And once those two rooms are finished, I'll move on to our bedroom/my closet, which is a complete disaster. I think I'll tackle the bedroom on my own because a lot of it requires trying on clothes and I can't really picture doing that with someone else coordinating the project.

Daily declutter task from My Simpler Life Declutter Calendar: Clean out one kitchen drawer. We have 2 more drawers to go through so this prompt is timely. Several of them are still full, so I’m going to need to reorganize, and probably get pieces that don’t take up as much space. They were perfect when we moved in, but we’ve changed the way we cook quite a lot since then so we have more stuff we use. I prefer to store like with like, but I think we are going to have to take out some less used items and move them to a cabinet. He’s a giant so he’ll be able to reach no problem. Do y’all have any drawer storage you can recommend? I’m considering those bamboo lengths that fit by pressure. We have this, which I love, but the categories we have in there are too big now: whisks, tongs, spoons/spatulas. It’s just the two of us and takes forever to fill the dishwasher so we like to keep enough to get us through that time.

Legacy Girl I am glad it went so well! About what percentage would you guess you got rid of? I think you made a good decision getting rid of the books, because I bet that led to you getting rid of more other items by not second guessing yourself, ya know? And you can always check out those books or buy used. How does it feel? How did they work? Just come in and start helping you go through items, or did they talk to you about your goals? Did they say “we need to get rid of (this much)?” I am curious as to the procedures, I like helping my friends and family and am always looking for feedback, what worked and what didn’t. Did they take the donations with them? I have never heard of them using 2 organizers, I think that’s a great idea so the homeowner can really see the progress in a short amount of time. Otherwise I think a lot of people would be understandably discouraged and not continue. You could always try on all the clothes and then have them help you with your room and closet. Please keep us posted as they come!

Today I managed to get through the fridge and the pantry. Tossed a large trash bag of expired stuff. Most of it was stuff bought for the Christmas dinner we never got to host because we ended up with Covid. 7 open pickle jars in the fridge! DH rolled his eyes at me when he got home from work and I told him it was time for another round of his favorite game “Will you eat it?” He had 9 different bags of chips/pretzels etc opened and 75% eaten on the snack shelf. Drives me batty. He appreciated how much space is in the pantry again. DS was thrilled to discover the 1/2 eaten box of captain crunch berries he didn’t know was in there because it was tossed in the back.
I also switched a bunch of activities out in my classroom today and I actually put them away where they belong instead of just tossing them in a bin or cabinet like I usually do. Starting to build some small habits.
