Although it has only been 11 days of 2024, I haven’t bought anything I don’t need. I’ve asked about the Stanley Mugs and Color Cubes here, but they haven’t been purchased. SO said to buy one of them as a birthday present to myself. I’ll reevaluate my “wish list” at the end of the month. I did find some more books to put in the donate pile. I have some magazines that need to be thinned out too.

I now buy things with the thought in mind " Is this something I am just going to be purging in a year or two because I really din't need it, don't have room for or I bought just to be one of a crowd." It's amazing how much less you have to deal with down the line if you just don't bring it into the house in the first place.

A few tears and 11 boxes later but now all dad’s clothes are boxed and ready for donation. I still have a bunch of misc things to go thru along with cleaning out his bathroom vanity drawers but it can wait. Today I’m going to start on the guest room. Somewhere in that room is a bed and a dresser and I intent to find them!

I have some magazines that need to be thinned out too. Check out this Essential Color Card Deck which is popular with quilters. The set has 200 cards and is only $29.95. It's been on my Amazon wish list for a couple of months now and I'll probably get it for my birthday in March. What I prefer about this set is that each color is a separate card and you put your own combinations together. When you turn each card over you will see the color plans (complementary, analogous, split-complementary, and triadic) for that color. There are also neutral cards which show the various hues and tints.

I followed the rabbit hole of decluttering YouTube videos and it motivated me to get rid of 1 thing from my nightstand drawer that I just did this week and 6 things from the closet that I did within the last month to change seasonal clothing to donate, a couple to throw away,

there were two bowls of catchall misc. on the kitchen counter. dh was complaining about them. I got rid of one bowl and the other has minimal stuff in it. a victory. and dh and I, after some discussion, put led tube light replacement tubes up in three lights in the basement.. they haven't worked well for 15 yrs(?).. so now the basement is bright. our basement is damp, full of stuff.. not finished in any way at all. and it has a garage space that I can barely get my car into.

I’m declaring victory today. Two trash bags and a few boxes later and I found the bed in the guest room! I still have to tackle the closet, I have dresses in there from when I worked (retired 11 yrs ago) that should have gone 10 yrs ago.

Still working on my room with getting clutter out.
After the snow I need to work on my shed.
Tomorrow is going to do final prep before we stay below freezing for a few days and get snow.

I did save a few of dad’s fire dept t-shirts and an almost new sweatshirt. I’ll add those to the ones I kept from DH for a t-shirt quilt.

In decluttering our junk drawer I found that while we started with a reasonable number of pens, office supplies, cutters, they multiplied and now we have way too many in there. After testing the ink and throwing away 2 pens (both red, is that a thing?), about 10 were relegated back to DH’s work and the rest to our office supply storage. 2 small measuring tapes, 2 utility knives, 2 correction tape applicators, 5 or 6 sharpies, 3 eyeglass wipes, etc. And found one key we aren’t sure goes to a current car so will check in the am. Oh, and we were reminded of an electrical outlet that needs to be replaced we have 1 white and 1 black on our built in buffet. So that came out and will hopefully get taken care of this weekend. We also need to reinstate our battery box. We had a generic divided box with our batteries stored in this drawer, but then we were gifted one of those huge ones with the testers, which doesn’t fit in here. The garage is right there but it’s still more of a pain than I’d like so I made an executive decision.
Oh, and I put feet on the bottom of my divided office supply organizer so hopefully that little annoyance will go away.

I have a small bin with travel toiletries, extra brushes, hair dryer, etc. I purged about half of the contents. There were too many old sample size shampoos, etc. that I tossed. I also got rid of a bunch of miscellaneous junk in there.

Daily declutter task from My Simpler Life Declutter Calendar: Organize your junk drawer.I love our “junk drawer” it’s full of super handy stuff. To make things easier to find, consider trays or dividers. This can be anything from an office drawer organizer to to separate bins to cut down cardboard packaging (like food items and shoe boxes). Whatever you’ve got lying around right now. If your drawer isn’t already pretty streamlined, maybe don’t go shopping for the perfect organizer right now, live with the newly decluttered contents and see if you want to remove or add anything. Or, if there is zero organization in there and you need something to tide you over, the dollar stores typically have something that will fit the bill and give you a better idea of what you need. Whichever organizer(s) you choose, make sure they either fit the drawer close to perfectly or have non-slip feet on the bottom. Our drawer is huge so our tray slips around pretty easily, even on a drawer liner.

There is also a clear version - Museum Gel which works well for class, crystal and clear objects/glass table tops.

I have gone through all the bottles of Mucinex in the house over the last 4 days. It’s usually very helpful. Not so much with whatever crud I have acquired.
Jay had taken it on Thursday and seems to have overcome the illness.
Mostly, we just toss whatever Nico has destroyed. LOL!
Halter, leash, 2 beds, ? toys.

Oh yeah, I bought some at a pea’s recommendation (possibly yours ) and used it for keeping photos aligned. I forgot about using it for the drawer this time, though I have in the past. Thanks so much for the reminder!

Yesterday I cleaned out my office closet--didn't get rid of any 'extra' pictures (stored in photo boxes after I scrapped the best ones) or negatives, but did toss an entire giant box of old greeting cards, and over half of my sewing stash of patterns and notions (those will go to a friend), as well as an old adding machine and shredder. There's so much breathing space in there now that I'm not closing the doors just so I can sit and stare at it for a while Today's job is to take all of the decorative storage boxes that I emptied down to our basement storage room ... and then remember that they're down there the next time I think I should buy something to store 'stuff' in!

Finally got all the outside stuff taken care of. Baby has enough straw for this cold snap, but not the next one. Somehow some of it got wet and molded. Ugh. I am going to be worried sick over him til this passes.
Inside goals for being hunkered down: price stuff for flea market booths, work on in progress scrapbook pages, clean room.

I cleaned out all my kitchen drawers today and thanks to dewryce all my cutlery trays now have no -skid feet on them. So nice to open a drawer and not have it sliding back into that bit of void space in the back.

It was the one thing of theirs that I knew no one (other grandkids, aunts and uncles etc) would be fighting me over if I said I wanted it, and as I don’t sew I needed something easier than a quilt 😁 I was able to make some extras into roses for my cousins and aunts as well so they all got one (I got the ones that matched from each grandfather)

What do you keep in your junk drawer that might sound odd but you find yourself reaching for time and time again?
Rubber bands (we use them daily) Clothes pins (to hold cereal bags, chip bags, etc, closed unused twist ties (I toss them after use)
two pairs of scissors scotch tape batteries hammer wrench two different screw drivers the little key to bleed to radiators zip ties
we do have little organizer trays from the dollar store, so everything has it's place.

For a small win, another bag of books has left the house.
I have gotten very good at not bringing in things for myself without them having a clear, needed purpose.
Even free things.
Especially free things.
This past week we had a strong storm roll through that snapped many branches from the trees. I spent time picking them all up, putting them in their pile to be chipped up once real spring comes. The woodchips will go into the compost.

Even free things.
Especially free things. This! I have been guilty of this in the past, especially with family items. I've also noticed over time that others here seem to as well. No more of that though! Unless I have an immediate need (not a use, but a need) for an item, I graciously thank them for the offer and pass. The reason I say it has to be a need and not a use is that it is so easy to fall into the trap of "I'll be able to use this item in a project someday". Experience has taught me that 'someday' will most likely never happen and the item becomes clutter (aka junk) in my way.
