I’m going through my jewelry and I have a lot of necklaces that I no longer wear. They are not really in style now (currently I prefer shorter more simple necklaces). I will likely get rid of many but am curious if others save clothing or accessories that are out of style with the idea that you will wear them when the style comes back? I generally don’t with clothes because even when the general style comes back there are slight changes that still make your clothes look dated. And who knows how long it would be before it comes back? But I’m not sure if that is the same for jewelry? What do you do?

I don't keep costume jewelry for the same reasons I don't keep clothes. If those necklaces ever were the in style again your personal style would be different and they would still feel dated.

Costume jewelry also tends to darken and look dingy over time IMO, so no, I would't keep that for the next time it's trendy.
I'll also be 70 or nearly so by the time any current trends come back around. Bodies change over decades even without weight gain/loss. So keeping clothes would likely be pointless.

I keep and use stuff that I enjoy/find practical. I don't worry about them coming back in style.

I have stuff because I like it, not because it's trendy. It wouldn't occur to me to keep anything for any other reason than I liked it.

I’m not sure anything I wear is currently in style LOL. It’s hard to wait for something to come back into style if it was never in style to begin with!
I wear mostly jeans/khakis/polos/fleece at work (university-branded polos and fleece).
Most of my casual clothing is chosen for comfort, so it is mostly the same as what I wear for work but not branded and add some tshirts and sweaters.
For “dress up,” I have a couple of basic black dresses with classic jackets to wear over them. Some are somber for somber occasions and some are more colorful for celebrations. I also have classic black slacks and simple blouses for the same purpose.
ETA: “Waiting for the style to come back” pretty much describes my scrapbook stash!

i actually seem to time it (specifically with shoes) that i call it and get rid of things RIGHT BEFORE they come back in style. doesn't bother me though, i tend not to prefer styles that have come back - maybe it just reminds me how old i am?
right now it's flared pants (which i never loved) and severely square toes shoes/boots. i am not buying either.

My general rule is if I love it, I 'll keep it. Most costume jewelry has its time. I generally wear the pieces I received from my mom, so other items are rarely kept.

I don't wait until it comes back. I just wear it. I have a lot of big "statement" necklaces from when that was popular and I still wear them. I just like the way they look. I have a couple cold shoulder tops I wear in the summer, too.
But would I keep something with the idea of it coming back in style? No.

No and my regrets are few but I do have a couple. One pair of brown boots and a classic plaid winter blouse and a dress or two. Keeping too much doesn't work for me due to a super small closet and I get overwhelmed with too much of anything.

No. Who knows if it will ever come back. I don't worry about trends. I wear what I like for the most part.
I've also stopped buying costume jewelry. I'd rather save up and buy a nicer piece of jewelry.
It's a good reminder to get rid of some older necklaces I have out of sight.

Not intentionally. I have some flared yoga pants that I just never got rid of and apparently they are back in style. But usually I am pretty good about purging my clothing once a year. As for jewelry, I am not much of a jewelry person. I usually just wear my wedding ring, small earrings, and my watch. So, I’ve purged a lot of my costume jewelry.

I've been debating replacing or painting our oak trim and doors (do plan on painting the cabinets in the next few months) and some people have said the oak is coming back. I kind of don't think it is coming back for trim (especially in many other parts of the country where it has been out for awhile) but maybe for flooring and other furniture. But it is slightly different shades and graining than what most of us have. Time will tell!

No, I don't keep trendy pieces if I am not wearing them. I have a collection of classic jewelry (that is higher end) that I do keep and wear despite what trend is in. But for the cheap stuff? It goes once I dont wear it on a regular basis.

I tucked away my skinny jeans that still fit and purged my old ones that were too small. I got rid of most of my statement necklaces and waist high belts from the early 2000s but I did keep a couple of favorites. I do have a bin of 2000s clothes I plan to let my nieces pick through soon, they are growing up in the same suburb I went to middle school and high school in and according to them I have a lot of “vintage school merch” they want to wear when it’s their turn to go to the same schools.
I tend to err on the side of classic styles and I don’t get too trendy when it comes to clothing but I do like to play around with accessories, it’s less of an investment and I don’t feel as bad if I don’t wear stuff for a while. I am not going for the super wide leg look for pants and jeans but I have tried out straight leg and boyfriend cut for something new without looking like I’m trying to be 20 years old.

A few years ago, my daughter asked if we could get some choker necklaces and I was like sure but I have a bunch in my jewelry box. She put her hand on her hip and was like “uh mom I don’t think you know what I’m talking about. These are cool.” I was cool once, kid! I showed her my stash of 90s chokers and she was thrilled. I got rid of all my velour lounge sets and now I’m buying her new ones, wish I had kept the originals. I always regret it when I get rid of stuff. My style changes a bit but my favorites remain my favorites so I say keep what you love.

Now I'm looking at what's in and thinking I need to go reclaim a couple of pairs!

I might have on to things because I love them, but not in the hopes it will come back in style. My thongs and platforms and super low cut Silver flares from the 00s were all retired long ago.
My overalls and jumpers and crop sweaters from the 90s, ditto. I see overalls and crop tops etc out again but I'm off the opinion that if I wore it once, it's probably not for me the second time around.

I'm not very trendy so I'm not holding onto anything hoping it comes back. At 62, I wear what I like and what fits my body and my lifestyle. The rare trendy pieces I buy, I buy inexpensive so I have no problem passing them on or tossing them.
I asked a friend awhile back if she kept clothes that don't fit anymore in case she can wear them again and she said the question that she asks herself is not "could it fit again but would I wear it if it did" and she finds the answer is usually no. I've been doing that too and find that it's easier to get rid of things that might fit again but I know I won't wear them anyway even if they did. Same rule applies to trendy. My question isn't will it come back in style, but would I wear it if it did. Being older, I have seen a lot of trends come back in style, but rarely, if ever, have I repeated them personally.

I ask myself this as well when it comes to clothes. I ended up deciding to donate most of the jewelry. At this point I really think that shorter (or at least not the super long necklaces that I wore maybe 5 years ago) look better on my body.

I definitely keep accessories. This was a lesson of my mother's that I follow. Jewelry just doesn't take up that much room and I often find that I wear things years later. One of mother's costume jewelry necklaces came from a high end department store we had in the 1970's. It would have been considered modern then. She is wearing it in one of my favorite photos of her taken about 10 years ago. I wore it to a wedding around that time and I've worn it recently. I got rid of the huge 1980's and 90's earrings because I just don't have the 'big hair' to pull those off anymore. I don't keep handbags unless they are in very good condition.
I've also got a selection of scarves that go back to the 80's (and one of my aunts from the 70's.) I've been wearing one of those 80's silk ones this winter because it goes with a sweater I bought last year. I received a couple of compliments on it and I doubt anyone had any idea it was that old.

I didn’t have a ton of clothes back then so I wore what I had until it literally fell apart.

I've never been a trend follower. I've never been one to jump on a bandwagon. If I like something I purchase it, wear it, use it, etc.... If I purchase something, I keep it indefinitely or until it wears out or I longer want it. If I no longer want to keep something, then it gets tossed, donated or given away.
If I purchase something and it happens to be something that society in general deemed "the current in thing".......my purchase was NOT made because other people were buying it. My purchase was made because *I* liked it.
If someone wants to judge me, because *they* think I or my home isn't up to date or in style..... that's their problem, not mine. I don't worry about what other people think of me and how I live my life. I humbly do what makes me happy.

I buy mostly classic pieces that aren't trendy. Black, white, and blue jeans take up most of my closet. That said, I'm going to be pissed if wide leg pants come back because my legs are the thinnest part of my body.
I have some statement necklaces, but they're meaningful because I either bought them when we lived in Asia or my best friend made them from beads she collected on her travels. They always come back around after they go out of style for a bit. I love them and they dress up my boring wardrobe.

I don’t really have much jewelry that’s trendy. It’s pretty much classic stuff that I wear depending on how it coordinates with my clothing. If I do have the occasional trendy piece (a few types of earrings come to mind) they’re so inexpensive that they’re not worth holding for their next go round.
