Do you have a "fear of missing out" (FOMO) regarding papercrafting (e.g. shopping, classes, crops)? Please share your perspectives. TIA.

If I get fomo it's usually due to not being able to go to a crop because I have something else planned.

I get FOMO about new AE releases. Nothing else really triggers FOMO for me, but I do find myself with FOMO re: WITL, DD type scrappy events.

Good question. I think the whole industry is now set up on the Costco model--if you don't grab it when you see it then it will be gone forever. Manufacturers are set up to produce one run of each collection. When that collection is sold out, it won't be restocked. LSS's are afraid to stock too much of anything for fear of it staying in the inventory too long. Popular things are snapped up before I can get to town. I forget which retreat we discussed earlier this month sold out in less than TWO MINUTES on line! Last week MFT brought a die set "out of the vault" and it sold out before I even knew I "needed" it. My email is full of "ACT NOW!" and "SALE ENDING TONIGHT" messages. So often I feel that if I don't act now I will miss out on the great product or super low price. And *sometimes* I act on that fear and order immediately. Most times I am delighted to receive that happy mail when it gets here. But truthfully that product I HAD to have stays neglected in its packaging waiting for a time I a) am scrapping or cardmaking with that theme and b)I can remember where I put that new had-to-have item ...

My FOMO comes with Pinkfresh Studios and other events. It is the price that deters me from attending. And I see all the goodies and hear all the excitement but in the end I realize that I don't need to collect more than what I need and will use regularly. So it is short lived.

I have been known to succumb to a really good sale - but I'm REALLY REALLY trying to only buy the items I know I will love from brands and designers I trust. I have learned over the years what I will use and what will sit in my stash.
I do attend some crops and classes with friends that I probably wouldn't go to on my own, or spend the money on, but the group experience is worth something and I don't want to miss out on the group activity.

I had a huge FOMO issue during Covid lockdown. I bought a lot because I watched all the online classes and gatherings and had to have whatever was being shown because it was so cute or looked useful and I felt a connection to the crafting world. I am now destashing a lot of that stuff because (1) I don't remember what I bought some of it for (2) I am no longer interested in it and (3) what the F was I thinking when I bought it!

My FOMO is usually clearance boxes. I try not to buy them, no matter how great the deals are. But, then you guys post what you got...

that's a complicated question...and I really don't know. Overall, not usually I think. But every now and then, I end up with something I might not have otherwise bought (looks at the recent Pinkfresh box...and the one I had bought previously). In general though, I've been fortunate enough to end of with enough destash papers from others that many of the things I missed out on the first time around have eventually ended up in my scraproom. And having too many choices overwhelms me so right now, I'm much less focused on acquiring stuff. My FOMO comes with Pinkfresh Studios and other events. It is the price that deters me from attending. And I see all the goodies and hear all the excitement but in the end I realize that I don't need to collect more than what I need and will use regularly. So it is short lived. YES - I think the events (online and irl) sound like SO MUCH fun but the price isn't in my budget and adding random stuff I might not keep using isn't needed either.

I would agree with grammadee about the model...buy it now or it is gone forever. I have spent a lot of time tracking down retired product (ahem, Basic Grey and Sassafras Lass), so I have a bad habit of if I like it I buy it, even if I don't have a use for it right now. I have gone through most of my old stash and I still like the bulk of the product, so I don't have much guilt but I also need to practice more careful management of my stash. I am lucky to have a close friend that I scrap with, so I don't feel too much FOMO with respect to crops. If we don't go together, I know that we will usually make it up with some scrappy time together. With respect to classes, I recognize that I don't usually keep up, so I have enough archived content to keep me happy...if only I felt the same about my paper "archive"

No, because I don't buy any branded stuff. I get what I get on AliEx, if it's no longer available, something similar or identical will always turn up later. Anything else I get second-hand, and there's a small shortlist of stuff I'll always pick up - thick chipboard, solid coloured cardstock, day planner leather binders, storage pockets, good markers or pencils. Everything else is a case-by-case "do I have one of these or not, and if not, would I use it and is there space for it."

I get FOMO about new AE releases. Nothing else really triggers FOMO for me, but I do find myself with FOMO re: WITL, DD type scrappy events. This is me too. Ali’s DD, Halloween and WITL gave me FOMO. When Shimelle released her recent collection, I had FOMO. I’m glad I have it but I probably could have calmed down and bought later. I wonder if there’s something about having a recognizable spokesperson who hypes a collection that then fuels my FOMO?

I only FOMO a little bit. My main problem is I’m usually “late to the party”. LOL. I’ll watch card making process videos, fall in love with the paper they use only to find out it’s an old video. I go down a giant rabbit hole trying to find a paper line that’s mostly sold out or discontinued. I did that recently with a pattern from Mintay. All I could find was full price with exorbitant shipping prices. I finally found it from an Etsy seller, 40% off retail and reasonable shipping. I bought the whole line and now I’m wondering what I’m going to do with it. It is really pretty, though. LOL

I wonder if there’s something about having a recognizable spokesperson who hypes a collection that then fuels my FOMO? That's a parasocial relationship - which does amplify FOMO, because you trust the person you've seen and spent a lot of time with, even though they know nothing about the audience. It's another psychological exploit that companies use to push their product.

I used to have bad FOMO, but then all of the scrapbook stores around me closed. I really like seeing things in person to know for sure what the colors look like and how it feels.
Another cure was buying too much SC/AE stuff on sale, and then discovering I didn't like a lot of the products. I especially don't like things like pleather, cork, plastic/acrylic, wood veneer, or other 3D embellishments. Giving away/selling those items fixed a good chunk of the FOMO.
I think another thing has been how expensive items are now ideas. Granted, it's been 12+ years since I lived in a town with an LSS, but $1.79 for a regular sheet of double sided paper is too much for me.
I have enough stuff to last me until the end of time, and I have other things I want to use my money for. I could have easily bought a car (or at least my first car) with the money on spent on sb supplies. I want to be a better steward of my money now.
[Just as a note, we'll see how well I do when I go to We Create in September- aka, the event that sold out in just under two minutes!]

The main FOMO I have is for in-person crops. We don't have any in my area, and I don't know anyone in real life who scrapbooks. I've done online crops, but I feel awkward doing them, especially when it seems like the other people already know each other.
In terms of products, I sometimes have regrets if I've skipped over something that is useful. I don't regret passing up kits that aren't my style, and I don't need too much of anything--so even though 49 & Market is my jam, I don't need every collection. I don't know if this is FOMO or not, but I made sure to preorder the AE "Joy" stamp because it's one I know I will use often. I'm trying to be more intentional with my purchasing because I don't want to leave behind a lot of junk for my children to deal with someday.

I had FOMO with the online events - especially Scrapbook & Cards today Crop & Create. Because they tend to have a large number of company partners and classes I start to think I am really missing out if I don't sign up. I will say I have curtailed my FOMO because I realized that half of the classes were companies that weren't my style and/or I didn't care for the products used. I'm still doing online events just trying to really think about the style and products before I commit. I'll likely still do the SCT Holiday event and Pinkfresh events. I did sign up for an upcoming Spellbinders event so I'll have to see if I like it enough to do more of theirs in the future.
Sometimes I get FOMO for paper collections and there are times when I finally decide I want the collection, it's sold out (like Cocoa Vanilla Boy themed collections).

In general, no fomo. Specifically, I don't do social media from my phone at all. So I have to wait until I get home to my desktop computer. If there's message board drama happening, and I am away from home >> at work....I can't wait to get home and catch up on the message board posts....especially if there is a current drama happening. I have to be "in the know" about it.

Only certain AE products, mostly the albums & some of the embellishments for DD & WITL. I'm ok if I don't get some of the embellishments I want but the albums would be the hardest things to miss out on because of the ring sizes being so much bigger than other brands.

Not so much anymore because I don't buy much scrappy stuff these days, at least not new. I pick up things thrifting or on marketplace. I probably wouldn't have felt fomo if I hadn't learned about the $3 stamp sale echo park had a few weeks ago (never promoted it on their fb, only in email and with a drop down on their website) until too late. Disappointed? Yeah. Fomo? Not really. I am very happy with the 17 stamp sets I got for around $55 w/tax, though.
I do feel that way with hobbies I'm actively invested in, to a degree. I tend to buy diamond paintings only on sale and not even a limited release could get me to pay full price...but this week I ended up overpaying for some brand new jigsaw puzzles because of them being limited (reproduction will happen but not with the logos for the organization they made them for and I kinda want the logos and to not wait 6+ months) because their website was having issues...but I complained and they gave me a satisfactory resolution. The 3 puzzles from this limited run cost me what I spend on thrifted puzzles in probably 3+ months as most of the puzzles I buy are between $1.24 and $2.49 (except the $700 one I found new open box on marketplace for $100 a couple of weeks ago...yes, I had FOMO with that one because it was a once in a lifetime opportunity).
If I were still regularly involved in the community, my answers would probably be different.

I've done online crops, but I feel awkward doing them, especially when it seems like the other people already know each other. You should join in one of the online crops here - they are very low-key on Google Meets and sometimes we all chat, sometimes we all put our heads down and create in companionable silence, and most of the time it's a mix. I was really hesitant about joining in but I really enjoy it now and everyone who does them is really nice...they are usually a small group of 2-8 or so.

I don’t know if it’s FOMO, but I definitely keep my eyes and ears open for paper crafting events that let me use what I have.
I don’t know anyone local that’s still a paper crafter so online events and crops are the only places I find people in that community.
Maybe I have FOMO of missing the opportunity to find scrappy community wherever I can?

Yes, but only certain things. I have been scrapbooking for so long, there is very little I have FOMO there. But card making (as a hobby in itself, not making cards from leftover scrapbook materials) is a newish paper crafting hobby for me, so I do have FOMO for certain events/classes that are happening, particularly companies that I enjoy their style. The good thing about card making is that most stamps, dies, stencils, etc. tend to stay around longer than scrapbooking releases, so I don't feel to need to immediately jump on products soon as I see them. I let the idea percolate for awhile.

Always have fomo - can’t buy so many collections and from so many sites due to never getting free postage and/or postage costs being so ridiculous that it’s not worth placing an order in the first place. $60 postage for one Kelly purkey/paper person kit meant I never got to get any of the collections I loved so much as I just can’t justify that. Have had to curtail orders from citrus twist due to the postage costs which is awful as I love their stuff. Most manufacturers have items that relate to events that I am not a part of as I am living in another country - 4th July is a USA only holiday but so many items centre on it for July. In a way though I think it’s good as it means I really have to like something to get it, but all the money I’ve wasted on postage over the years would just be so scary to calculate…

After moving and not having most of my stamps/dies that match for 9 months, it's almost like Christmas again. Not much FOMO going on now as my craft room and storage area shrank by almost 50%. I'm in a "what can I sell so I can unpack what I really like. But I will admit, Jennifer McGuire gives me FOMO on occasion . . . so I'm not totally over it. And I did cave and buy the Altenew Spring Garden class. I like to see what the class features, rather than just know the teacher's themes. My stash is large enough I don't need to have things that aren't my style.

I absoultely have FOMO from a good instructor or youtube video...lots of times I will see them do something with a product I didn't think I needed and then the end result is so awesome I think, "OMG I have to have that!" Usually it's a stamp and die set.

Yes, for themed paper collections I didn't think I'd ever use... and then we do something that fits that theme, and by then it's disappeared from existence. Now I try to plan ahead... are we going within 100 miles of any cowboy things in the next decade? Maybe I should buy that ranch paper just in case...
I don't take a lot of classes or go to crops so most of my FOMO is from watching videos on Youtube.

I am definitely an impulse buyer. Is it FOMO? Maybe. But it’s sometimes more a matter of do I want to wait to get this, or is it something I will use now? I really like Queen & Co. products, but sometimes if you miss the release, you won’t be able to get it for two months. If I’m not sure that I love it, then I wait to see what others do with it. Will they come up with a use or idea that doesn’t occur to me? If the latter, I wait. If I am excited about the product and think that I will use it now, I try to get it the night of release.
However, at convention, I definitely had some FOMO and gave into some impulse buying, since I did NOT know if I would be able to get the items later. For example, I bought some extremely cool background dies at Tall Mouse in the past. When I have used either of them on a card that I posted online, I always get asked, “Where did you get that background die?” The company that designed and made those two dies no longer sells either one. They have new background dies, but the old ones were better IMO. I’m really glad that I got them when I did. And of course, at Convention last Friday, I definitely bought some dies because I knew I might not be able to get them later.
