I just wanted to clarify a couple of things. Firstly, my oldest is my daughter with MS who gets basic benefit but has been turned down repeatedly for disability. Her brain fog and fatigue stop her working- yes she is running the marathon this weekend but sleeps probably 15 hrs a day and can't concentrate on anything. It's depressing as she has a double English and Spanish law degree and was set fair for a wonderful career before all of this. She does contribute half of the small amount of benefits are receives, as does my youngest. When they get extra- like with had a cost if living benefit bonus scheme last year- they both handed it straight over towards the bills without me even asking I gave my bedroom up to my oldest son, because he has his son come to stay and it made sense to me. He and works shifts, so if he was in the living room I wouldn't be able to use it fir large parts of the day-and the only access to the kitchen is through the living room. He is downright mean over money and has also refused to help with the garden ( he did help a little when he first moved in 4 yrs ago but has refused since). I'm battling with how to deal with him ATM. He's a nice guy, but he has given me this huge guilt complex with the middle child syndrome thing. He has said he never feels like part of the family- yet he chooses not to take part in things. For example, he won't commit to joining the rest of the family this weekend when we are going into London to support my daughter as she runs the marathon. When I was in hospital fir both of my cancer surgeries he didn't visit, send flowers etc.Hecwoujdny give me a lift to catch the train fur my chemo treatments- that sort of thing. He has hurt me deeply with that, but I suppose I keep hoping he'll change as I don't want him to end up lonely and alone like his dad. I've definitely taught him how to treat me! I know he will move out and I will see my grandson even less often if I force things ( he lives with his mum 100 mile's away and only comes for part of the school holidays.) I'm afraid he's very like his father - generous to all his mates who thinks the sun shines out of him, but he barely connects with us at home and is definitely taking advantage of knowing that I can't bring myself to lay the law down. This is all very much my own fault because I feel I have to maje up for the fact he feels he missed out as the middle child, with a younger sibling with severe disabilities from birth. I really hope that you are seeing a therapist for these ongoing issues with your son. What he is doing is Elder Abuse and is unacceptable. It is a difficult situation but unfortunately, being the 'good guy' isn't always the best for our children at any age. Living with people involves the work and the fun stuff of being in the family unit. He will not change and it is time for him to leave. Do not let him guilt you as this is Elder Abuse. Your grandson will, in time, hopefully realise that his father is abusing you and will want a relationship with you. PLEASE look after yourself first, then your dd.

It has taken so long for my dh and I to actually have extra money. I am 61. I will retire in 4 years. That scares the heck out of me. I can't imagine living without a paycheck because for so many years, we lived paycheck to paycheck.
I have a new car. If I only had to pay $425 to register it, I would be delighted.
But I understand the cost of living. When I go to the grocery store, I am astonished how little I get for how much I pay.

In Texas it is $75/yr for the license plate registration and $25/yr for the annual Inspection needed to get the license. Used to live in California and don't miss the high cost of living. Same price no matter the age of the car.

In Iowa, my 2017 is still $350 per year for the registration/license plate sticker.

I always feel like there's not really going to be a way to get ahead because you'll just get paid less if things cost less.

I wonder if Massachusetts has Texas beat. They don't call us Taxachusetts for nothing

The main reason I don't get a second dog is the cost. I'd love to have a playmate for mine but every time I go to the vet, it's at least $200 and he also has to get groomed.
I really wanted a pug because I love them but got a rescue because of the cost and the fact that he stole my heart away.

Would love to see your source for that because every chart I've looked at indicates Texas has a lower all-in tax rate than California. DH would love to find something to back up his desire to retire to Napa/Sonoma!

We switched to a cheaper vet close to our cabin an hour away a couple years ago and now even there we can’t get out of the place for under $600 (2 dogs, a year’s worth of Heartgard and NexGard for each, plus an annual exam). It’s insane. And don’t even get me started on the cost for the emergency vet. Both times I’ve had to go there it’s *at least* $800-900. 😕

I have horses. The horse vet comes to me! I don't even have to leave the house and they get sedated, all annual vaccines, annual dental, sheath cleaning, exam, and I am given two free dewormers and enrolled in a program that eliminates emergency after hours call fees for the rest of the year. That costs approximately $550-$600 this year. Contrast that with what the typical visit costs for a cat or dog and you have to go to the vet and sit in a waiting room!

I'm going to start getting his vaccinations at the local Penny Paws mobile vet clinics because every time he needs a vaccination, they charge me an office visit rate. He's only 3 and doesn't need to be seen that often by the vet.

No preventatives purchased (I buy them on line.) She did get her cytopoint shot for allergies ($115 every quarter, but she’ll likely need 5 this year) and her galliprant script (one month of “old dog pills.”) Tested her poop and she got a rabies shot. $450.

My car is a year old. I paid $769 to license and register it. Our plates are good for 2 years, but we pay property tax every year on the value of the vehicle.
Our governor was trying to raise the state sales tax to lower home property taxes. Higher sales tax will slam people in poverty and those living with lower wages.

I can relate to everyone with the cost of everything going up.
I live frugally, but it just doesn't seem to matter. It doesn't matter if I choose not to spend on luxuries, if the cost of necessities is so high it absorbs and over-reaches my minuscule raise (that I have to be thankful for, because I at least have a job).
I have a multi-generational household, with both my kids (adult & minor), and father living with me.
Food cost is huge. I make most of our meals from scratch. Lots of pasta dishes, soups, stews, etc. I buy manager's markdown. I shop at Aldi for most of the food.
I save regularly, only for it to be needed for an immediate unforseen need to come up. Not even for fun stuff. Not even for vacations. Just a savings bumper to ensure we all are housed, all are fed, all are warm and safe.

Well, I live in Florida 18 miles from the coast, newer house. My yearly homeowners insurance bill went from $2,800.00 in 2018 to the $10,000.00 in 2024. I have a mortgage so it is mandatory. This is a major issue in Florida and many are leaving due to this expense and the overall impact on housing costs.
I am a lifelong Florida resident and this is my home, but I am seriously considering leaving due to this and the other dreadful nonsense in Florida.

I don't "think" they can cancel me since they have to give 60 days notice, maybe...

Just wanted to say I'm sorry. I am old enough to remember when interest rates were 17% (to buy a house) and prices were going up by the day.
It got better. It will get better. I hope you are able to get to a better point.
