Probably very frustrating for you, but take her back. You should be able to return everything, right? Eventually this will be one of those stories that gets retold when she is a full grown adult.
My son's girlfriend in high school ended up wearing the exact same prom dress as another girl a year older than her. They weren't friends, but they did take pictures together and took it all in stride. Years later the other son married the other girl. They always giggle at the pictures they took together. What can seem so important in high school definitely can change. Right now it is important.

I'm assuming its this - sorry too lazy to shrink it - and yeah, this isn't a prom dress at all. Sorry.

Well, I'm too late to the discussion as I see you have already decided to take her shopping for another dress. I truly do think that's your best response. I like the suggestions of having her include a friend or two, so she won't feel pressured by you - even if there's not really any pressure, she's got that in her head.

Still figuring it out actually as she has turned down my request for prom dress shopping episode 3 and is currently at tennis practice. I think I'm going to go hug my oldest who wouldn't have gone to her prom if you paid her a million dollars, and eat a lot of ice cream

If you have Amazon Prime, she/you could order a bunch of dresses to try on and return the others. Just double check for free returns.

Everything shiny, or sparkly was too long (she's 5'4") and I have no sewing skills. You can get hem tape and just tape a hem up if all you find is too long. It’s nit quite permanent but should last a day for the prom.

And she's not wearing it, it's already in my trunk ready to be returned.

Did you only shop at the mall? I think it's very hard to find prom dresses at chain stores. I think you'd have a lot better luck at a store that specifically stocks prom dresses and they *should* still have lots of dresses in stock. Even a place like David's Bridal will have better options than department stores.

Are you part of a Buy Nothing group? Many people have given and received dresses in specific styles (like 60s) and have had great options. I would also check consignment and thrift stores.
Good luck!

After seeing the dress, I agree that it would be a good idea to take her shopping again. It's a nice dress, but definitely not Prom-worthy, and not particularly 60s themed. But this time, I'd encourage her to take a friend, and you can hang out in a cafe while she does the rounds herself. That way you can't "pressure" her to buy something she doesn't want. (I'm sure that you didn't pressure her the first time, but why open yourself up to a teenager's accusations a second time! ) Good luck!

As a mom of a teen girl, I feel your pain. I don't know how many pairs of shoes I bought and returned. Oh, yeah, I forgot that one. We had to buy 5 different pairs. She ideally wears a women's 11.5 so we had to buy online, likes a heel but can't walk in them if they aren't sturdy enough, blah blah blah...

I just went to the link and searched Prom Dress. There were many prom dresses that came up. Good luck! I'll be in your situation next year.

When my mom, sisters and I went on a cruise years ago we all needed dresses for formal night on the ship. We went to a few stores and ended up at Penney’s after prom season had passed and we shopped the clearance racks. All four of us found fancy, sparkly dresses in our sizes on sale and I don’t think we ended up spending more than a hundred bucks total on all of them combined. It was quite the score!

At first I was gonna say no way but then I saw the dress. That's not a prom dress and I really don't think it's cute at all. If she liked it that would be one thing but she obviously doesn't. Whether you meant to pressure her or not, whatever. I say drop her off and let her choose something new on her own.

I am seeing prom photos this year and the dresses all seem to have trains. Can someone explain this trend to me? How do they dance or do they not even dance anymore at prom?

How do they dance or do they not even dance anymore at prom?it seems that dancing barely happens. It's all about the pictures! My DS just went to prom. They took pics, took a party bus up to the venue, stopped along the way for bigger group pics, and then went to the venue. Our HS serves food (a lot of them do not). I joked that he needs to eat $80 worth of food (that was the cost of one single ticket). Prom was 7-10. I think they got there around 730 and left by 9!!!!!

I’m glad you are taking her back shopping! There are not a lot of life events as pressured as the prom, and it would be hard to be there not feeling comfortable with what you are wearing.

I would think if the dress has a train there would be a way to bustle it up in the back for dancing just like with a wedding dress.

DD’s dress for her senior prom had a train. There wasn’t a way to hide the bustling buttons, so I made a ribbon loop that I sewed into the seam. She said that it worked well.

It's funny how dresses are still sometimes bought for beauty/photos rather than practicality. I remember wanting to buy a beautiful emerald green Jessica McClintock dress for prom. It was knee length and had sleeves that wrapped around the sides of the shoulders. I looked so amazing in it but I couldn't raise my arms hardly at all and I needed to do that to dance! So I passed and bought a purple dress with a slanty skirt, a black lace overlay, spaghetti straps and a medium sized butt bow. Very 1990 and I still had it. But hey to each, there own! The green dress can be seen here: www.ebay.com/itm/175449765491

I wore a Jessica McClintock for my junior prom. I loved those dresses! I made a wedding dress in about 1992 with the same sleeves. We worked hard to hit the sweet spot where she could lift her arms and yet still get the look that she wanted.

I agree that taking her back is the way to go.
And sometime well after prom I think is a good time to gently discuss standing up for herself, saying something while shopping/when whatever occurs, and not placing blame on others for our own decisions. If she can’t stand up for herself with you, how will she be able to in other situations?

That dress is ugly. When you do take her shopping again, ask her what parts she likes and doesn’t like on each dress. It may help her narrow down the style she’s looking for.

She says she has no interest in going shopping again, or looking at Amazon for a dress. She "has it all figured out" and to leave her alone about it. As far as I know there's no prom dresses hidden in her closet and she has a tennis meet tomorrow afternoon until 7 pm, so This is just par for the course with her this this school year

If you're gonna return it, you'll be at the store anyway. May as well shop again.
