My son is a volunteer coach at his former high school. Another coach was on a surfing trip to Baja Mexico. All those on that trip are presumed dead. link |

Incredibly sad. I just saw a headline earlier today showing that they were missing. I hadn't realized their bodies had been (presumed) found already. And two were brothers. Just heart wrenching for their friends & families.

It's awful. The news here has been about the two brothers who are missing, now presumed dead along with the other surfer. So awful. The brothers' parents are on their way to identify their sons. That's something that no parents should ever have to do.

We assumed that they were dead, but of course hoped for a positive outcome.
Son is devastated, while not admitting he is devastated. He seemed confused when I told him how sorry I was.

I was watching the local news tonight, and the views they were showing of the shoreline of Baja are gorgeous. It is no wonder surfers like to go down there. Very sad news though.

On a personal level, this terrifies me because my daughter and two of her roommates are planning to go to Baja after a concert near San Diego next month. One of her roommates grew up in that area but I don't think that will make them any safer from crimes against tourists. |

Make sure they stay in tourist highways/areas and don’t wander into remote locations. There were four bodies found. The fourth was the owner of the ranch where the bodies were found. Even locals are not safe. |

She & I talked about this story and when I mentioned what a target her car will be with a Pennsylvania license plate, she immediately agreed. Their plans are still up in the air so this was a really good conversation starter.

I wouldn’t worry about her plates, but border crossing times with a car can sometimes take hours, depending on the time of day. They can walk across the border. Either take a trolley from downtown San Diego to the border, or park in one of the car lots next to the border. After they get across, they can take a taxi. Walking into Mexico is usually fast, coming back into the states can take awhile, even with walking. |

And I also would be terrified if one of my girls was heading that way. It's interesting, because my first thought when I heard three men were dead, was that they had been murdered. I have always thought that Mexico was dangerous, and not somewhere that I would ever consider going. But numerous people have said no no, it's fine, just stay in the tourist areas and you'll be safe. (And yes, I realise that these guys were not at a tourist resort.) I sure as hell would not want my daughter to go there. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that I would be on my knees begging her not to go. |
