The first class has landed. Time to pull out my CTMH diffuser(s). Not sure if I still have them both (I had a circle and a square open spaces, but not sure if I gave one of them away to someone who was stamping more sentiments than I tend to do). Shakti , she demo's how to DIY a diffuser from cs.
QUESTION: Does anyone use a Vagabond for embossing? Trying to figure out the "sandwich" for 3-D embossing.
I think I saw the diffusers in the drawer under your Vagabond when I visited and we were playing with that stitching folder.

You prob figured it out by now, but Vagabond sandwich for Sizzix and Tim Holtx 3-D is platform only (no adapter), 3-d folder, cutting plate. Other brand 3D folders are different thicknesses. You might have luck going to brand's website or googling for them. I know for sure Spellbinders 3-D is different, but can't remember the configuration.

I did watch both videos this morning. I don't know that I would go to the trouble to make a diffuser, although I saw another video that made them out of heavy weight chipboard, rather than having to cut and stack layers and layers of card stock. I also find myself wondering about making diffusers from old cutting plates. The full plastic/acrylic ones would probably require the assistance of DH and equipment in his maker space. But an old Magic Mat might have similar qualities to heavy chipboard where you might able to use combination of a die/die cutter and craft knife.
Or I could just keep my eyes peeled for some second hand ones. They may well be being snapped up quickly right now after that video, but with patience I think I'll find some. I do feel like I've seen Christina demo diffusers before, actually, though I can't think where that might've been.
Mindy's video I felt was sort of missing some information. The two folders she used for the partial embossing had some design elements that tied them together -- the busier floral folder had some dot clusters in the design that really tied it together with the dot pattern she used on the bottom. She didn't talk about it in her instruction, but I suspect the secret to making the results look cohesive is more than just picking a busier pattern and a simpler one. The second technique was similar in that you need a smaller and larger pattern. She talked about feeling the heart folder to decide which side to use, and that it would work with 3D folders as well as 2D, but not really about how to select folders from your stash that might be successful. Can you use a 2D with a 3D? Who knows?
Has anybody made a card or experimented with the techniques yet?

Just some panels, so far. Used diffuser circle a few times, and double embossed once.

Just some panels, so far. Used diffuser circle a few times, and double embossed once. I had no idea what everyone was referring to when talking about a diffuser, when used with embossing folders. Now that I see your example, I get it! Those are really pretty. I especially like the double embossed one. Very cool technique.

I especially like the double embossed one. Very cool technique Thankyou. That wreath folder for the double embossed one has "Thankyou" in the middle, and I wanted to use it for sympathy cards. After I used the diffuser plate to get the wreath and not the greeting, I decided to try the circle insert with the hearts. Not sure if I will use it that way or make some more wreaths with open centres.

Here is the one card I completed. I was wondering how I would use the circle diffuser with the branch embossed piece, and realized (duh!) that the diffusing technique is much like masking with inks. So I used something I learned from joblackford a few months ago, and once I had inked the branches in green, I placed a circle mask near the center of the panel and inked in from the outside with a darker blue. (CS was light blue). dragonfly sympathy by Gramma Dee, on Flickr

Did you use the diffuser piece as the mask or another piece actually intended to be a mask?
I actually have the CTMH set on the top of my "try to find these on the used market" list, because there are only two.

Well I never knew there was such a thing as a diffuser for embossing folders so I am totally intrigued by the first video. I'm in the midst of making a bunch of die cut cards, but once I finish them up and clean up the craftermath, I am totally going to try making my own diffuser. Fingers crossed!

So I did some quick playing using the Darice Easy Frames and the results for regular embossing folders are pretty good. Trying to get the right sandwich for 3D embossing folders was tricky with the Platinum 6. Top row is regular embossing folders, the bottom is an Altenew 3D embossing folder. If you plan to make a diffuser, it does not need to be as thick as the ones Kristina made in the video. My easy frames are thinner than 1/16". I'm guessing you could use thin chipboard or maybe 2 layers of cereal box type cardboard to make a diffuser. I'm going to try to make a diffuser with a 3/4" diagonal line that goes across a card front.

pinklady, your panels are very pretty. Shakti, someone asked in the fb group about materials for DIY diffusers, and several options were mentioned, including packaging materials.

It seems like Kristina was trying to make the diffuser thick enough to dispense with a top cutting plate altogether. With the Darice diffusers did you use a plate above them? Are they the same 4 1/2 x 6 that the Tim Holtz and one other brand I found are? If it's not a matter of gluing a gazillion shapes together, it might not be so onerous to make one, though it still occurs to me that you can only make shapes you have dies for. The ovals in the TH or Darice sets I wouldn't be able to duplicate.

Haven't tackled the diffuser sitch yet, but here's my first try at double embossing: I didn't like the amount of ink transfer I was getting, so I tried a card stock shim. Not sure it helped where I wanted it to and clearly caused some blotching. I might try again with pigment instead of dye. I was quite surprised after Mindy's demo to discover that for these embossing folders I needed to use the busier botanical first and then add in the bamboo trellis. That seems like the opposite of what she did.

I totally forgot about the diffuser technique. I made a circle shaped one back in the day with chipboard. I don't think I still have it. I can't imagine making one using that stack of paper! I agree Mindy's technique looks good (swirl and dot card) because her choice of embossing folders don't compete with each other. The heart card is too busy on the top portion (the red) and my eyes don't know what to look at. The bottom portion where only the swirls are inked is better to my liking. Interesting timing, I watched this Meghann Andrew YT on Sunday. And like this technique. (not part of the OCC class)

The ovals in the TH or Darice sets I wouldn't be able to duplicate. The Darice Easy Frames are only 4 1/4 x 5 1/2. Yeah that's why Kristina did that but honestly it seemed like a waste of paper to me. I had to try out a few different sandwiches but this is what I ended up with: Old school 2D embossing folder – Platinum 6 used the 2D sandwich printed on base. Altenew 3D – Platinum 6: Base plate, 1 cardstock shim, embossing folder, Diffuser, cutting plate Spellbinders 3D – Platinum 6: Base plate, embossing folder, Diffuser, cutting plate *left a faint impression in open diffuser space so I need to revamp this sandwich. If you were to make your own diffusers the size is going to depend on what size cards you tend to make most. If you are only making A2 cards then 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 will work fine.

Nothing new today. I preferred Jennifer's video, but I think because I find her voice interesting to listen to, like a real live chat, whereas his was very flat. I also preferred her explanation about which side to ink. Not all my folders have writing on them.
I inked a couple of panels. Debossed tire tracks and embossed bird on grass While I had that bird on grass folder out, I embossed it with vellum. I liked the look of the embossed vellum on darker cs, especially after I brushed ink over it, so I finished another card

Yes, I see this morning that I jumped ahead by inking my embossing folder.
Watching today's class, I want to run right out and buy a brayer. Which I could probably actually get at the fancy art supply store in town....

If anyone else is brayer-less, really impressed by the results Jennifer got with one today, and lives relatively close to a Michael's, their Recollections stamp ink brayer is well-reviewed and there's a 30% online coupon which I used to order it for in-store pick up. Under $10 including sales tax!

Just a FYI: I was on the Spellbinders site looking for a particular club kit embossing folder and was happy to see that all but their very most recent embossing folders are on sale. Some are 50% off. Betterpress is also on sale, as are other items but I tried to keep my eyes facing forward and only ordered folders. Yay me. Anyhow, have fun shopping!

The things I love from SB has never been their dies, but their embossing folders and some of their stamps! I'm not sure I need any encouragement, but it's true that as I've pulled all my folders together for this event, I am seeing some gaps. And even though I didn't finish the class, in that Altenew alcohol marker coloring class with Kelly taylor, she did mention texture as being important in creating backgrounds for cards where you want your coloring to take center stage....

No time to do more than look at the samples today. Watched a couple of minutes of the first video. I am not sure now if I actually PURCHASED that 3-D balloon folder, or just WANTED to buy it LOL. I have cut balloons before to use as masks and/or stencils for birthday cards. Thinking there was a class in one of the Crop & Creates where we embossed with a detail die, then used the outline as a stencil to colour the flowers? Have never tried it with an embossing folder...

I picked up my brayer and I'm still playing with my plants and trellis. DK likes it better with the leaves and trellis "facing" the same way, rather than one debossed and the other embossed. Easier with the brayer. Trying to decide what else I might try from yesterday. I'm not at all sure how I feel about Jaycee's embossed inlay cards.
I didn't get the balloons because I have SO MANY balloons.... I'm not sure I really have any of these large, plain dies to cut simple shapes to emboss, either. I suppose I should watch and then decide.

I just watched this video that mentioned a sale on SSS embossing folders and this technique looks easy and fun. I feel like I probably have a folder I could do this with, if not using circles perhaps using squares or stripes.
I have struggled to get good results with Spellbinders embossing folders in my Big Shot. I'm not sure if it's an issue with compatibility, finding the right sandwich - I've tried every damn thing with one of them which makes me wonder if it's a lemon.

I assume that "every damn thing" would include Spellbinders' recommendation on their website for using their folders and dies in Sizzix machines?

Grumble. The free videos folks have posted are making me wonder why I paid for the class (though the cost was modest).
Or at least the cost was modest before the 4 half-price SB embossing folders and the one in shopping cart at SSS....

OK. Finished a card! Not sure I like the sentiment placement, but it's only on with temporary adhesive anyway. I also made a "you are so kind" one. I figure if I get this job, I owe my internal referrer who is fielding all my needy, paranoid messages a thank you card! It might need some bling or something, but as is, I think it's a nice, simple, somewhat masculine birthday card. I'm not sure I'm inspired at this time to try anything else. I can't find any two in my stash to try Mindy's technique, but I think that will be resolved when my SB order arrives next week. I only have two folders with dies, neither of which I think is quite right for that shaker technique. I do have a stamp and die which would coordinate with a folder I don't have but would work really well for that. We'll see how long I can resist -- have I mentioned I'm an anxiety-shopper?! I could try some more of the inking techniques from day two or find folders that might work for Cathy's slightly different take on double-embossing. And, of course, see what's on tap for today!

Another card: I had a somewhat similar tile embossing folder and a somewhat similar SB die cut pack, so it's pretty similar to Jaycee's. Don't love, but it's "better than horrible".
