I apologize in advance as I know I am stomping, not just stepping, on the toes of some Peas.
Who in the world thinks using "unalive" is a good choice of words? What the He$$ is wrong with saying a person died?
It makes as much sense as saying "I unhungried myself" instead of "I ate something."
I hope never to see "unalive" instead of "dead" again. I will stop but I could go on with my negative thoughts about "He unalived himself."

There was a recent thread about this.
The simple answer is that some words are not allowed in social media. They get flagged and get the content removed.
Words like “suicide” and “died” get flagged, so people say unalived.

It’s literally a work around for built in filters on some social media.

Then use normal words and an empty space in the word -such as de-d...but don't make up crap words. I have not looked, but I feel confident that "unalived" didn't make it to be included in the dictionary.

I am on FB and have used the word suicide and nothing happened.
What social media platform does not allow it?

I am on FB and have used the word suicide and nothing happened. What social media platform does not allow it? You don’t have enough followers for anyone to be worried about your content. Language evolves.

I am on FB and have used the word suicide and nothing happened. What social media platform does not allow it? I see it more on Tiktok where there is a recording of someone speaking. Which is then translated with captions. Maybe some IG stories. Where people are speaking with their followers.

I am on FB and have used the word suicide and nothing happened. What social media platform does not allow it? Many Reddit forums (subreddits) don't allow the use of the word suicide/kill(ed). I can't say that I fully understand the "why" behind that, but it's very much a thing there to use unalive to get around those rules.

Same as when someone says they were "graped" or S.A.'d rather than raped oe sexually assaulted. Seems sills as children shouldnt be on that platform anyway, but that is where we are

I'm not a fan, either. Understanding the current reason for it, or even now learning that it has been in use to some degree for a longer time than I realized doesn't change the fact that it sounds a bit crass to me.
I feel like there are so many other ways one can say that a person has died without resorting to that.
And I feel the same about some of the other terms people are resorting to as well.

I understand the reason for it but I think it's stupid. I also see it used with levity when talking about certain circumstances that seems inappropriate, so I just find the word off putting.

You may find it dump, stupid, and irritating but for those with mental health illness, it is better to hear or read unalived than to have the word suicide mentioned because they could be in a place of very unhealthy feelings and thoughts that they have ideation of suicide.
Be thankful you have never been in that space.

I have not been in that place but I have had a sister commit suicide and know the horrible intense pain of that kind of death.

I am on FB and have used the word suicide and nothing happened. What social media platform does not allow it? I see "unalived" frequently on Reddit. I see it mostly on TT. They do it to ensure their videos aren't flagged and get taken down. Too many violations and they can't post. The message they want to get out is more important than using a replacement word...

Genuinely don't understand why anyone would let an unoffensive word bother them so much. Don't use it if you don't like it, but why waste a second being irritated by something so tiny.

I think the same can be said by people who don't like the word "suicide" though. Not everyone is going to like the same thing. I see both sides of it. I'm Latina. I can't stand the word Latinx because I feel like it cheapens the Spanish language. Why Latinx? Why not select a word that at least sounds like Spanish? Latine, or some other variation? But others would say why would a word bother me? Because it does.

Thank you to those who explained how unalive came about. The only SM I use is IG (very very lightly) so I’d never heard its origin. Makes sense to me.

You commit a murder, fraud, rape, other crimes etc. So it has criminal connotations, when most people no longer see suicide as an actual crime.

We also commit to our spose... commit to the outfit we are wearing today... commit to our plans for the summer... Commit is something we make a choice to do... not to trigger because i do say died by suicide... but i don't get upset by someone saying commited suicide... And i am not trying to be flip about... i hope no one gets hurt by the words in this thread...

Yes, but to commit to something is different from to commit something - it has a completely different meaning.

Many podcast use unalive because the other words de-monetize them.
In the heart community I’m in though someone names a support group the unaliver and it drives me nuts. We survived, not any other made up word.
