I am through my daughter. We had the great fortune to attend the Eras Tour in LA (night 1) as the guest of my sister in law. We were on the floor in the 8th row! We are definitely in the Eras Tour film in the aerial shots. We had from December to August to learn every song from the concert. My daughter gave me a crash course in all things Taylor Swift. I knew her bigger songs but I really didn't know much about her personally.
Well, let me tell you, there are few people in this industry as smart, kind, creative and talented as Taylor Swift. Her lyrics are amazing and so insightful and fun. I am happy she is getting the accolades she deserves. We are also in favor of her relationship with Travis Kelce. Even my 80 year old mom is a fan now!
I love that Taylor is something my daughter and I can share and talk about and make tons of friendship bracelets while listening to her music. It has definitely bonded us.

I really only like two of her songs so definitely not a Swiftie but it seems to be fun for those that are so I like it for them. She seems to encourage community and friendship.
I'm not a pop type of person but it seems that some of her recent songs are darker which I like a bit more. Channeling my inner goth.

Just watched the video. I don't know if the little girl with the pink headband by Bradley Cooper is a big Swiftie. Everyone else looks like they are having fun.
I am not a Swiftie. Nothing against her or her music, just not my jam.

Hell yes I am! Okay a little story for those interested. My daughter has been a fan forever and I was ambivalent at best. Red was on our car where you could put in like 5 CDs and I let each of my kids put one in for when we were schlepping places and I could tolerate some kid music. But I never had a single song on any of my playlists or really followed anything about her. Enter Covid and Evermore/folklore. I sat in our basement when they were released and listened to all of them with her. I really liked a lot on those albums, and honestly anything that gave my kid even a bit of excitement and joy during that time was going to endear me. That's also when we watched her documentary which really humanized her for me.
Enter Era's tour. It was a major operation with me, my daughter, her bff, her boyfriend, my husband all doing our best to get tickets. We ended up with 2 sets of 6 and shared 6 with our neighbor who had struck out. We were of course tasked with learning the playlist and I honestly never appreciated HOW PROLIFIC she is - even my husband was amazed at the range of her music. People often dismiss her as a one note, writes about her ex-boyfriends, but they've clearly never gone through her insane catalog. Anyway, I picked up some songs that I liked and added them to my playlist beyond my homework. Then there was my mom and daughter spending HOURS and HOURS on her taylor swift "costume" - thank you Taylor for giving them that time together - and yes turned my 78 year old mom into a Swiftie.
The concert was amazing and inspiring at the sure joy she brought to almost a hundred thousand people. I had a great time and seeing the genuine kindness she inspired - it was a great day and worth every $ spent and forgone as we could have resold for a fortune. My daughter texted me continuously during Midnights release from a thousand miles away as she listened to the album - we shared laughs at the KC insanity as my husband is a long time fan. Yes we've bonded over it.
And I think she is an inspiration - not because she's a billionaire. But because she has worked HARD on her craft. People mention her voice quality. She was slammed for not having a singing voice and has worked and worked to improve. Sure she'll never have the range of some wonderful singers, but that's just fine with me. She has been knocked down and written off and just kept writing and singing. I admire that about her. And her savvy business sense is obvious to even her haters. And finally she has an amazing way with words that unless you've really sat down and plowed through her catalog, you probably can't appreciate. There are songs that spoke to my daughter during times that were really rough and lonely for her - that I don't think anyone would be surprised by.
But anyone who has experienced loss and warning if you have, especially miscarriage/young child, be warned it can hit hard - Bigger than the Whole Sky is beautifully painful. It's one of several of her songs that shocked me how closely she could hear what's in my head.
So - for all that I'm a proud Swiftie - even if some of her fans are a little out there.

Not a Swiftie here although I have nothing against her or her music (some of it's enjoyable to listen to). That said Miles Teller and his wife are close friends of Taylor so think that skews perspective a bit. Bradley was obviously there with his young daughter. No comment on Aaron Rodgers.

Darcy Collins you explained it so much better than me. I really only knew the popular songs, but learning the deeper, more meaningful ones (folklore has probably replaced Rep as my favorite album) gave me a whole new appreciation for her as a writer. Personally, I believe that’s where her true talent lies. Listen to “mad woman,” “my tears ricochet,” or “illicit affairs.” Evermore has equally emotional songs. I think TTPD is an album for the fans who appreciate that aspect of her.

I jumped on for Folklore/Evermore and then got into the Swiftie universe more when Red came out (those were my first three albums of hers). Loved the Eras tour and movie, have the 1989 cardigan, I’m all in at this point. It took me longer to get into the pop albums, but the good part is I am now more open to pop in general and am, eg, seeing Olivia Rodrigo this summer.
Sometimes it us fun to like the popular things!

So I looked up the lyrics to her top rated songs, and they were (IMO) very basic. I would love to have my mind changed though, because I don't want to be negative about her, so point me in the right direction..... I would genuinely like to know what your favourite songs are. I pride myself on enjoying a wide range of music across many genres, so I really want to like her! But so far I am underwhelmed.

I don’t think I qualify as a true Swiftie, as I don’t like her early/country stuff. Especially when listening to a studio recorded version. Live is a bit more tolerable.
Once Red came out, I was all in! Love everything she done since. Never been able to see her live, but we keep trying.
In general I don’t like current pop music and haven’t for a few years. I typically listen to hard rock/heavy metal, or old favorites from the 90s-10s. Taylor & Olivia Rodrigo are my exceptions. TTPD is on repeat at my house. DW is definitely a Swiftie.

I don't know what the number is but she did donate to our local foodbank. And on top of that, how she has treated her staff, with those bonuses and perks. Also, another tear jerker.. Ronan.. "The lyrics are based on a blog by Maya Thompson about her three-year-old son Ronan, who died from neuroblastoma in 2011. Swift wrote and produced the song by putting together quotes from the blog, crediting Maya Thompson as co-writer."

Then today one of my favorite writers, lecturers, and educators, who teaches a poetry class every semester, announced that the theme of her class next semester is Taylor Swift Lyrics. In the course description, she gives the example that in The Tortured Poets Department alone, TS references the following works of literature: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf The Iliad The Aeneid Peter Pan Little Women The Secret Garden The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Macbeth Romeo and Juliet Various Emily Dickinson poems Just Kids by Patti Smith The Great Gatsby The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford The Shining A Wrinkle in Time The Little Mermaid I don’t think you can call the lyrics “basic” if you need knowledge of a college syllabus worth of literature to understand them.

Yep, I'm a Swiftie, and now my 10-year-old daughter is, too, and I love that we share that. What can I say, the music moves me. I feel like on every corner of the internet, I see people asking "But WHY? I don't get it..she's not that good" and such, but really, can anyone explain why they love this or that musician, or that artist, or this writer? It's all art, it's always going to be subjective.

When I read comments by people claiming that her song writing is brilliant, I wanted to find out what I was missing out on. So I went to Spotify, checked which of her songs had the most listens, then played them and looked up the lyrics. I was underwhelmed by both the songs and the lyrics. What can I say? And just because she mentions Romeo and Juliet in a freakin song, doesn't mean she is a lyrical genius, or that one needs "knowledge of a college syllabus worth of literature to understand them." Meh. I haven't looked at the lyrics of the songs from her latest album, nor have I listened. At that stage they were not in the most popular on Spotify, because the album had only just been released. Maybe they will be a bit less "basic." But oh dear, I didn't go to university...... hopefully my Year 11 and 12 English Literature classes 38 years ago will have given me enough knowledge to understand her brilliant and complicated lyrics.

Wow. I didn’t expect a rude response. You asked someone to change your mind. I wasn’t arguing with you, just offering an example. And that’s not the correct song for the Romeo and Juliet reference. I mean, obviously that is a reference, just not what I was talking about as I specified which album. Nevermind. It sounded from your post like you actually wanted to talk about this. I see that’s not the case.

Who else has seen the new TTPD performances from her first Paris show? They are amazing! INCREDIBLE The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and Who's Afraid of Little Old Me? were especially fantastic but they were all great. I wonder when they started working on the set, costume, choreography, and visuals changes? Conceiving, executing, and practicing all those changes is a big lift - seems like way more than could be done in a two month break. I was in meetings all day yesterday and have a flight this afternoon, so I won't be able to watch a live stream again today :sob:

Honestly this is why I didn't respond to your request. You don't like her - oh well don't care. But if you ACTUAL want to know why people are drawn to her it's that her range is well beyond some top songs on Spotify. That song was released in 2008! It was and is a teen song still trending as many in the next generation of teens experiencing young love relate to it. There are some gems in Red or Reputation, but it's really folklore and evermore where she hits her stride in lyrics IMO and Midnights has a lot of really interesting songs - but again if you don't like her great. I have no doubt I can pick apart your favorite artist as meh - I'm just not petty enough to ask you share something you like and then be rude about it.

I've been a Swiftie since before the term was around I guess. I remember her performance of "Tim Mcgraw" for the first time when she made an appearance at a country awards show at 16 singing it to the real Tim McGraw. It's still my favorite song of hers for the sentiment/innocence. I couldn't get tix for the 1989 tour, but saw Reputation, which just blew me away - I became a bigger fan after that. I honestly just love that she gets ppl so bothered. It reminds me of the quote about "well behaved women are rarely remembered." I am a bit older than she, but I have to say her lyrics have taught me words I didn't know and she has also helped put into words feelings I've had about the female experience in life, work or relationships (love, family, friends). Also the simplicity of it all is sometimes the complexity! Like talking about a relationship in which she fell hard in love as a young adult and ended up really hurt with many ups and downs....saying she remembers it "all too well", like that just cuts right thru for me. I remember that relationship I had all too well. AussieMeg nbd if it's not your cup of tea, but I think with the songwriting and lyrics, if you know her process more I think that's where the admiration comes in. She often starts with a poem or phrase, then writes a song on her guitar or piano, then goes to the studio and collaborates to turn it into something everyone can hum and get stuck in their head. In recent years, she's done things where she links songs on different albums through certain words or sound, so you know she's relating those moments, feelings or people. She also loves irony. The public/press says she's a serial dater who will write a break-up song about her latest guy and she writes Blank Space, which I still think is probably one of her best. Because of all the public scrutiny lately I've been thinking so much about this..like female performers... why all so controversial and judged? Madonna, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Lady Gaga.... then think of big male stars... the Beatles, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Elton John. Maybe that last one didn't have it so easy, but the others all sang about unrequited love but no one said they were complaining or drowning in their own tears?! <can't find soapbox emoji> Who else has seen the new TTPD performances from her first Paris show? They are amazing! Yes! I've been obsessing this morning... I have to say, and maybe fellow Swifties can validate?? I feel like with each album it takes time to warm up and you have to listen a few times before you really start hearing it and understanding it. So knowing that it came out 3 weeks ago, obviously the tour part was in planning for much longer with the set, props, costumes, choreography, etc. The songs she added are the ones that I have been drawn to in just the past week with relistening to the album, like how does she do that?!? She knows her audience and that's why she has so much success. IMO.
