I like some of her songs but don't consider myself a "Swiftie"

This is what I was referring to in my earlier post. I have heard so many people say how brilliant her song writing is. So I looked up the lyrics to her top rated songs, and they were (IMO) very basic. I would love to have my mind changed though, because I don't want to be negative about her, so point me in the right direction..... I would genuinely like to know what your favourite songs are. I pride myself on enjoying a wide range of music across many genres, so I really want to like her! But so far I am underwhelmed. Ok, I’ve been thinking about how to respond to your post for days because I think she’s a brilliant lyricist. Then today one of my favorite writers, lecturers, and educators, who teaches a poetry class every semester, announced that the theme of her class next semester is Taylor Swift Lyrics. In the course description, she gives the example that in The Tortured Poets Department alone, TS references the following works of literature: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf The Iliad The Aeneid Peter Pan Little Women The Secret Garden The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Macbeth Romeo and Juliet Various Emily Dickinson poems Just Kids by Patti Smith The Great Gatsby The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford The Shining A Wrinkle in Time The Little Mermaid I don’t think you can call the lyrics “basic” if you need knowledge of a college syllabus worth of literature to understand them. OMG I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to take a class like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IMO, THAT is the way to get thru to kids/young adults! Not any of this read the Great Gatsby or Tom Sawyer or To Kill a Mockingbird and try to have them see how we are still dealing with some of the topics in modern times. myshelly who is this person??? ETA its not just the lyrics tho, its the subtle hints and references... for example, thanK you aimIE - the title is just freaking brilliant alone... and then to dive into the lyrics... it just amuses me how clever she is.

That's a song from 2008, when she was 19. If you're going to write her lyrics off as 'meh' that's up to you, but at least judge based on her more recent work. Honestly this is why I didn't respond to your request. You don't like her - oh well don't care. But if you ACTUAL want to know why people are drawn to her it's that her range is well beyond some top songs on Spotify. That song was released in 2008! It was and is a teen song still trending as many in the next generation of teens experiencing young love relate to it. There are some gems in Red or Reputation, but it's really folklore and evermore where she hits her stride in lyrics IMO and Midnights has a lot of really interesting songs - but again if you don't like her great. I had no idea that the song I quoted was from 2008. My google search was for “most popular Taylor Swift song” and that’s what came up. And when I saw that it referenced Romeo and Juliet, I assumed that it was one that myshelly was referencing. Mea culpa. Believe what you what Darcy Collins , but I was genuine in my question to you. And it's not that I don't like her. I said in my first post on this thread that I admire her, I think she is very talented (as a singer and performer), and that she's a great role model. I'm sure you could. But the thing is, you didn't share anything with me - as you said, you chose not to reposed to my request. My response was to someone else, who said that you need knowledge of a college syllabus worth of literature to understand the lyrics. Anyway, one of my best friends of over 40 years and her daughter are massive Swifties, and I will be going away with them soon, so no doubt they will educate me on the best songs. I’m sure the new album will be on high rotation. Who knows, I might come back as a Swiftie myself.

When my daughter was doing Year 11 or 12, one of the text books that some schools were studying was a book about the songs of my favourite artists. I was hoping against hope that DD's school would do that one, but unfortunately they didn't. I would have gone to English class with her!

Not a Swiftie here although I have nothing against her or her music (some of it's enjoyable to listen to). That said Miles Teller and his wife are close friends of Taylor so think that skews perspective a bit. Bradley was obviously there with his young daughter. No comment on Aaron Rodgers. And Bradley is dating Gigi Hadid, one of her best friends. Bradley and Gigi were at the last Paris show last night also, in the suite with her mom and Travis (and others).

It's so funny that she posted this because I literally said the other day "I swear TTPD is set to become a Broadway play" which would be awesome.

My 33 year old is an OG Taylor fan. I didn't pay much attention until I saw this story on 60 minutes. This was in 2011! I hate the term but she definitely was a boss babe before it was a thing. I have grown to enjoy her music but admire her more.
