We were typed in our 20s prior to going on our first overseas assignment. Since we were going to a hardship post, we were happy to see that both of us are A+. We figured if an emergency arose we always knew where a good donor was. Have you had them typed? Two O positive parents can have O negative children. Two A+ parents can have an A- child as well! That is the case for us. She has been typed multiple times, as well as showed up as ours via Ancestry DNA testing!

I used to know. They told me I’m O+ after my last surgery but I swear that wasn’t what I was before. I think the nurse didn’t read my chart right. I know it can’t change and I have been curious if I really am O+.

I found out the first time I donated blood in college, O-. My kids were all immediately tested after birth to see if I needed an extra RhoGAM shot, but I only remember the ones who were O- like me lol.

I used to donate blood on a regular basis and the Red Cross gives you a frequent donor card that has your blood type on it.
When my son was going through his cancer treatment, the Mayo Clinic wanted to have all of his bloodwork done at their own lab in Minnesota. Since we lived in California, I found a place that would draw the number of vials that were required and put them on dry ice to ship them to the Mayo labs. My son was very concerned about the number of vials needed. It was the largest volume of his own blood that he had seen and it really upset him.
So to help him put it into perspective, I decided to donate my blood and took him with me to see the much larger volumn of blood taken from me. They would not allow him to come back to the draw area, but when I explained why I needed my son to see that I could donate a full bag and be ok, the nurse had him come and stand in the doorway and she held the bag of my blood up so he could see how big it was in comparison to what he had taken with his many blood draws. He was shocked that I could get up and walk after having so much blood removed. It made a huge impression on him and he stopped being afraid of his frequent blood draws.

I got my type when I gave blood at our local blood bank. Prior to that I was always told by my doctor that insurance wouldn't pay to have blood typed.

O -
Congenital heart patient here. My heart and the type of blood that runs through it has always been a subject of interest as long as I can remember.
Both parents were RH neg, but when my mother remarried, after her first child with SD, she began to have trouble with RH incompatibility , and after my second half sibling, she only had miscarriages. This was in the 60’s, though, I know they do so much more to help now.

You probably can't unless you want to pay for it, most likely. It's not a necessary lab unless you need blood or are having a procedure where you might need blood, in which case it's always going to be drawn no matter what you say you think you are. (we never give blood without a new crossmatch unless you're dying and don't have time for that, in which case you'd get O- the universal donor type). Getting it done for free is a bit of a perk when you give blood.

Yes, O-. My ex-husband has a positive blood type (I don't remember which type) and I had to get the Rhogam shot with both of my pregnancies.

Funny story. In grade school we were typed. They let us all prick ourselves and I thought it was the coolest! We had to ask our parents both their types, and we did a little experiment with it. I came back B+. My parents were both A+. Never thought a thing about it until many years later!

I'm O-. I found out when I was pregnant with DS and had to have RhoGam. I signed up to give blood later this month, but on a whim, I checked the guidelines. Since I'm on human growth hormone, I'm not allowed to donate. Disappointing since I'm a universal donor.

I’ve known since my 20s but can’t remember how. I think I was given a card with it on after a hospital visit. I’m AB+ Wow, a universal recipient! Rare position to be in. Lucky you! I am also AB+. Up until now, I was the only person I knew with that blood type!

We recently had a blood drive at our church & I volunteered at the check in, which had a list of everyone’s blood type. We had about 20 donors, one B+ (me), one O+ and every one else was A+, it surprised me that there were so many of them.
