Chiefs kicker, Harrison Butker, gave a graduation speech at a conservative Catholic college. He said in the speech that while some of you women will have successful careers, your most important title should be “housewife”. Most of you can’t wait to be wives and mothers. I don’t agree with anything he said in his entire speech, he touched on other hot political topics, but isn’t a graduation speech supposed to encourage young adults to go out into the world and work hard and overcome whatever obstacles are in your way to reach their dream? His speech was inappropriate in my opinion for the event. I'm sure the woman that were graduating didn't spend thousands of dollars to become a wife.

It would bug me if I was sitting through my daughter’s college graduation and had to listen to this. Knowing it is a conservative Catholic college probably made him feel like this message would be better received there. I would like to see young women pi$$ed off about how some conservative men view them. We’ve taken huge steps back in the rights of women and speeches like this can be a great reminder of what is on the line in the upcoming election.

Maybe they didn't go into debt for their education? I know when I got my degree I only did it so I would be able to provide for myself and my kids if I needed to, not that I ever planned on working. We tell women all.the.time to have backup plan. Its entirely possible to get a degree and not have debt. |

I wouldn’t say “many” women do that these days. Back in the 50’s or 60’s people used to joke that women went to college just to get their “MRS. degree” but not today. Now I’m really curious what the tuition is at that school and how many people attending qualify for financial aid. (ETA: just looked online and it’s $34K per year for tuition and fees. So roughly $137K for a degree and that’s IF you graduate in 4 years.) I found that speech to be highly offensive. |

He reminded me of the senator who gave that speech from the Kitchen. And to see him all choked up over his wife, whatever. Then I saw a TT of Olivia Julianna, from TX (the one who was called a "thumb" by Gaetz I think?) who said that KC is playing both sides... they have travis kelce who is VERY left, pro vax and dating Taylor who is pretty pro woman, etc. Then they have this guy who will play to the conservative side. Its entirely possible to get a degree and not have debt. This was me to. My DH was active duty military for 22 years. We made the decision that me working didn’t go with our plans to travel as much as possible, his schedule was so unpredictable we took advantage of any time off he could get. Now that I’m older with multiple health issues, my DH is also 100% disabled from military service, I do not have one regret about how my life worked out. I saw the world when I was young and able and gave my DD the stability of one parent at home. I have several degrees not just as a backup (I also volunteered thru several military organizations that paid for classes to keep my skills up to date), but for the simple love of learning. Being a housewife doesn’t negate the need to be educated. I support women choosing what works best for them and their families Chiefs players speech I could do without. Gross patriarchy is never a good look |

I hate to tell him, but with the cost of living right now, it pretty much ensures that many households have to be dual income. So, some of the women that dream of being a "housewife", actually don't get the chance right out of the gate.

During the 20-minute speech, Butker quoted a lyric written by Taylor Swift, referring to her through her boyfriend Travis Kelce by calling her his "teammate's girlfriend."

I think he’s being ridiculous, but what else would you expect from a conservative religious college? And an education is never wasted. Especially on someone who’s raising the next generation. basketdiva, please rethink that attitude. |

I know many women who have and some that are going to Catholic colleges. Most would not be OK with a speech like that, and as far as I know, the Catholic colleges in in MN are not substantially more liberal than others, but maybe they are?

On TikTok, there are many men trolling reaction videos, so his speech has angered many women (and men) while emboldening men to harass women. Regardless of his immediate audience, he had to be aware this would inevitably reach a wider audience.
He wanted to provoke a reaction. He's getting it. Maybe he has political aspirations and hopes the GOP will embrace him like they did Tommy Tuberville.
If left up to me, he'd be out of a job and he'd be forced to walk through town naked, covered in ashes, to the chanting of "Shame" by Hannah Waddingham.

Apparently the Chiefs' IG is blowing up with people pissed about this whole thing, so they might have to step in.
