Today is the day. I’ve been okay all week since we’ve been busy with bday festivities, but the longer I sit here this morning, the more nervous I get. I love my sweet boy, and I’m not ready for aging health issues. 😢

Good luck Wili! Fingers crossed your chest is clear. Thanks! Thankfully, his chest is clear, but we need to find out what the mass is in his liver and kidney. Praying they are unrelated, and nothing serious.

6/10 UPDATE: no answers as of yet.
The specialist said he’s less worried about the liver as there are common nodules that appear in a lot of older dogs. They are doing a CT scan later this afternoon to get a better idea of what is in the kidney, and what types of treatments could be done. We’ll know more this evening.
He did say that he was glad that we caught it early, before any symptoms had started.

Forward to 3pm…
The specialist called to get approval to get a sample of the liver mass…not sure what’s up with that. He said he’d look at it through a microscope on site, so we may have some answers tonight, but no idea what to expect. He said he didn’t want to do that to the one in the kidney because it could rupture. I’m guessing he thinks they could be unrelated masses, but no idea.🤪

6/10- 5:30 pm UPDATE:
Pretty decent scenario- Liver biopsy should be back tomorrow. They are thinking that they can take the kidney, and get the mass in the liver as well. After we get the results back tomorrow, we will decide if/when surgery will be. He just said in the next few weeks. He said that Wili is healthy enough to handle the surgery.

6/11- last presurgery PUPdate: So, it seems we are looking at the best prognosis. The liver mass needs to be removed as it will keep growing, and could eventually burst, which would send him into liver failure. He believes that due to its shape, the entire mass can be removed. As for the kidney, if not removed, the cancer could spread to the other kidney, causing kidney failure. If it’s removed, the other kidney should be able to pick up the slack. He has no reason to believe that his other kidney would fail. He has had other dogs with the same liver mass that has lived at least 1 more years, and up to 4.5. He says that Wili is otherwise healthy, and should have no issues living a happy, comfortable life for whatever time he still has.
We are looking to do surgery hopefully in the next two weeks. He doesn’t want us to wait more than four. The surgery nurse will call to set it up, probably tomorrow or Thursday.

I lied…one more PUPdate:
He has a consultation for surgery on Monday 6/17. He’ll be staying overnight and surgery will be Tuesday 6/18. He’ll be there 2-3 days. Recovery will take around 6 weeks.

6/18 PUPdate:
Our precious Wili is out of surgery, and starting to wake up from the anesthesia. Hoping to hear from the oncologist, who is taking care of him post-op, later today.
Surgery is complete. He didn’t get the whole liver mass because he thought it would cause more problems, but he’s happy with what he was able to get. If it’s one of the three types of tumors he thinks it is (he sent it off for testing), it’s very slow growing. We could go back in later if need be, but he thinks he’ll be good for at least a couple more years there.
As for the kidney, it was really bad. So glad it was caught when it was. He, and the oncologist that we spoke with on Monday, said that they believe his other kidney has already been picking up the slack, so going forward it should be fine.
Praise God that’s over, and he’s on his way to a full recovery! Thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers. This momma and daddy needed them!🥰

Wili looked VERY comfortable. LOL Dr is going to try to take him off the Fentanyl, and gradually move to Gabapentin tonight. Still unsure when he'll come home, but most likely Friday. It's still 50/50 whether or not he'll need chemo/radiation. He didn't eat last night, but we got him to eat some turkey meat while we were there. He'll recheck his kidney and liver function tomorrow, but so far everything looks great!

6/20 PUPdate!
Fabulous news!
The oncologist Dr Burney that took over his post op care just called. He’s very happy with his recovery process. He did more labs this morning, and everything looks great! There’s a couple of numbers, one liver and one kidney, that are slightly elevated, but he said that that is expected after surgery.
So…drumroll…….he’s coming home this evening! YAY!!! So relieved, and thankful that everything has gone so smoothly. Praise God!
We will get the pathology results back next week, so we’ll find out then how we’ll need to proceed.

They are on their way! He just needs to not jump on things for a few days, and wear his cone (Wili is an obsessive licker). He has anti nausea meds and Gabapentin. We only need to call if something seems off, or his incision gets red. Follow up is on the 15th.
