In the reel below this guy is explaining what it means to him if you’re on a date and your phone is either face up or down on the table. My thought is why would my phone be on the table at all? I’m one of those that when I leave the house my phone is in my purse where it stays unless I get a call or need some information off of it. Once I get what I need back in the purse it goes. The question is when you go out does your phone stay in your purse until you need it for something. Or do you hold it the entire or most of the time you’re out? www.instagram.com/reel/C3GeozpOFIb/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

My phone is usually in the outside pocket of my purse. Makes it easy to take out if it buzzes, or if I need to use it to pay for something. If it is just my SO eating out, at a casual place, it is not unusual for us to both be on the phone while waiting for our food. But we put it away while eating, sometimes on the table. With friends, I always put my phone in my purse. I also like to take random photos of interesting things, so I keep my phone easily accessible.

When dh and I were able to get out for an hour or two when ds was on TPN and Oxygen, ours phones were on the table, face up. We couldn't be more than 30 min away and needed to reached at all times.
You never know someone's life and what is going on so I do not judge people who have their phones out or facing up or on their lap.
They could be on call
They could care for a disabled child
They could be expecting an important phone call
They could be caring for a parent who is near end of life
They could be waiting to here from a hospital on when to arrive (we waited at my parents house while we were on hold to be admitted once)

it depends...am I actively doing something? be it eating, talking to someone, grocery shopping, looking at art? then it stays in my purse unless I need it to take a picture or check on something.
Am I just waiting in a queue or a waiting room or in the car waiting for someone? then I'm probably either reading on Libby or playing Pokemon on my phone
Am I out with DH and he's spinning Pokestops and catching Pokemon? Then I'll have my phone out also.

My phone is generally in my purse which will be in my lap or on the floor between my feet. If for some reason I have it out it will be face down. This guy sends off all kinds of controlling vibes to me.

My phone is usually carried in my front pants pocket. I will take it out if I am waiting, like at the doctor’s office the other day, or if I need/want to answer a message or check something. At lunch yesterday with a bunch of retired coworkers it was on the table because I’d been asked about an app and I took it out to show the person asking how to do something. I also used it to film the hibachi chef, and the calendar app when we were setting the date and place for the next lunch.
I don’t always have to take it out, as I can glance at my watch to check an alert or a message quickly. But my phone is used for a lot of things, so it’s always handy.

If I am eating with someone, or doing something with others it is in my purse. In a waiting room, I may look at it if there are no good magazines.
At work on break, I sit twice a day with 3 other coworkers at a small break table. I used to never take my phone out of my locker on break, but two and sometimes all three of my colleagues cannot seem to sit down without looking at their phones, so I do take mine out and scroll just like everyone else as they’d rather look at SM than chat.

My phone is usually in my purse. But I'll just tell you that I was in the farmers market a couple of months ago and an older lady said to me, you kids can't put your phone down to even shop! I turned it around and showed her my grocery list. That's what I was looking at.
Then yesterday I was sitting waiting for an appointment at my hand surgeon's office. I pulled out a book and as I waited I was reading. This is a totally typical behavior for me. When the medical assistant came to get me she said, I don't even know the last time I saw someone reading a book in the waiting room. She said she used to take one with her everywhere when she was a kid. What are you reading? I just winked at her and said, do I get bonus points because it's a library book too? We laughed super hard and I told her about the book I was reading.
And Jeremy and I will sometimes scroll our phones in public. It's not typical, but it happens. I know people are most likely judging us, but they don't know that he and I get like 60 hours a week of waking time to spend just the two of us. Our relationship is not in danger if we are waiting for food scrolling phones.
All this to say, you never really know what's going on with people. But I do have one friend that it bothers me how much she is on her phone when we are trying to spend time together. I know when I am being ignored. 😔

it is in my pocket and it is frequently out if I have to wait.. even at a dinner table. dh and I share stuff we see and discuss stuff. I want to be ready if my sister calls me (she is disabled).
we use our phones for everything so not strange to me to have it out.

I don't really carry a purse. So it is either in my hand or my back pocket or jacket pocket. However even with a purse most of the time my phone is on my body vs in my purse.

If we’re with family, I’ll put in the dates my parents are Up North, any doctor appointments, pull up an app someone is talking about, etc. We are also a family who discusses subjects with facts. So we will fact check each other, look up an article that we read, check stats, etc.

I do not carry a purse so I generally keep my phone in my bra. Classy I know 🤣. If I'm at a restaurant or something it's on the table. It is in a wallet case though.

Depends on what I'm doing..
classroom? pocket or table/desk- I use it for my bells since we don't have bells. home? who the hell knows where it is. I put it down and don't get it unless I need to. restaurant? face down on the table next to me because I don't like to sit down with it in my pocket and I don't carry a purse.

Shopping, it's put as I check my list. If I went to someone's house, I bring it out in case I need it. At a restaurant, probably in my purse, unless I need to check it, take a photo, look something up. I don't really see the difference between face up or down. Unless it's down, silenced and you don't check it. It's there because you don't want to sit on it in your pocket.
DH's phone is our business. He can get calls for jobs 24 hours a day. Him having his phone on/facing up/in arm's reach when he's out is actually freedom. In the old days you would have had to have had a 24 hour dispatcher sitting at a desk. Now it's mobile.

My sister used to carry hers in her bra. She stopped when she was in a 1 on 1 meeting with someone important (bank officer I think) and phone rang. She didn't take the call and her phone rang many times. She was mightly embarrassed and quit carrying it there.

I usually keep my smartphone at home. I don't need to constantly keep looking at a phone but I do keep a phone in my purse if I do need it and that's rare, I can always use a phone somewhere.

Generally in my purse. I've never been one to put it on the table at a restaurant, just don't see the need to do that.

It’s either in the slip pocket on the outside of my purse or it’s in my sweatshirt or pants pocket. If I’m shopping it’s in my hand because my lists are on it. If I’m sightseeing or something, probably in my hand if I’m taking photos. If I’m in the car, it’s either in my purse or in the vent phone holder because I’m using it for navigation. If I’m in the car and not driving, I’m probably looking at Instagram or Facebook. If we’re at dinner they’re probably all put away unless we’re looking something up.

Inside pocket in my purse.
Just my personal opinion... I think it's rude and inconsiderate, to be eating (out or at home) and constantly be looking at your phone. I especially dislike when people are on their phone, during the entire meal.
I am not one, who needs to look at my phone constantly.

I mostly keep my phone in my bag but sometimes I’ll have it out on the table or bar. It depends where I am, who I’m with and if I’m expecting to hear from someone.

You just never know. This is also why I have an Apple Watch. Compromised immune system former preemie son that has potential life threatening issues. I do however pretty much keep my phone in my purse at all times because I get the notifications on my watch.

I turned it around and showed her my grocery list. That's what I was looking at. Ugh. Mind your own business. I wouldn't mind being called a kid, though. I have a lanyard/wallet phone case so it's around my neck when I'm doing errands because I don't carry a purse all the time. When I'm out with DH or friends, it's in my purse on silent. If there's an emergency I'll see my Apple watch. I agree with the guy who prefers not to have phones on the table. Who are you with? Him or the people on the other end of the phone? My friend's daughter is a 20-something adult with a job, a home, and a child. She calls constantly with some "emergency" that she should be able to handle but somehow needs advice from her mom. My friend's phone blows up every time I'm with her and flashes lights every time she calls. At least it doesn't croak anymore as a ring tone.

The question is when you go out does your phone stay in your purse until you need it for something. Or do you hold it the entire or most of the time you’re out? I use a fan pack worn like a crossbody purse so it is right against me and tight to my body.
My phone is always in that.
I'll admit, I don't know how people walk while reading/using their phone and not just walk into things and trip all the time. If I get a text, I have to step aside to read/answer it.

Mine is typically in my purse. Definitely at a restaurant. If I'm in a waiting room sometimes I'm on it, sometimes I'm not and just sit and people watch. It makes me MENTAL when I'm at dinner with someone and they keep looking at their phone.

I carry only cross-body purses so if I’m away from home it’s quite likely in my bag. It will be in a pocket however if I’m out walking or hiking.

I usually keep my phone out on the table when I'm eating. Sometimes, I look at it occasionally and sometimes I don't.
If I'm by myself, I'm reading on my Kindle app.

Usually out. If I am having lunch with friends or whatnot, I'll have it out and face down. Will check it here and there in-between discussions. Nothing usually that will come in-between our conversations.
I haven't been in the dating world since the olden days. I would assume I would do the same, have it nearby and check when possible. In-between conversations or during a bathroom 'break' type thing.
When I am at our game night with friends on Saturday evenings, I'll have it near me and basically check it the same way, in-between things.
I have a husband who travels most of the time so I like to be sure to keep it around so in case there is an emergency, plus three kids. They usually don't call if I am busy though, unless needed.
Edited to add: While at a doc's office I am usually playing a game while waiting or reading 2peas.
Some of the comments are that you use your Apple Watch and keep your phone in your purse. To me there isn't a difference, you are still checking texts or whatnot, so what is the difference if your phone is next to your or you are looking at your watch? Not causing a fight cause I have my phone next to me, so...
