I'm grasping at straws here. 2Peas has always been a wealth of information, so here goes....
Jan. 2024 Kaylyn passes out a restaurant. Her boyfriend immediately took her to an ER where she got IV fluids. She had traveled back to college the day before. 6 hours on the road without much hydration because she was trying to limit the number of bath room stops. In the ER, they detected a "T7 inversion" in her heart EKG. Doctor didn't think it was serious but encouraged her to get checked out. We attribute the incident to dehydration.
She managed the stresses of her Spring Semester well and got good grades. Her boyfriend is loving and supportive. Both my husband and I like him a lot. She tells me they have a great relationship with little to no drama.
End of May, she came home for the summer to work her summer job at an optometry office. They love her and she does a really great job. She's very conscientious about doing her job well and is very detailed oriented. The doctors welcome her to come back and work whenever she can during winter break and summer break.
June 3, 2024 She starts to be intensely nauseous and violently throws up multiple times. The nausea first wakes her up out of a sound sleep in the middle of the night. The ponderosa pine tree outside her bedroom window is shedding yellow pollen like we've never seen before. I wonder since she's been away at school if maybe she's more sensitive. I buy an air purifier and set it up in her room. Windows are now closed and we constantly run the air conditioner in addition to the air purifier. I washed all her bedding well. I find an allergist and make an appointment for July 5th. We start the BRAT diet. She nibbles on a banana ok but that's about it other than Gatorade and water and a little ginger ale.
June 5, 2024 We make the first trip to our family doctor. We see a PA who thinks it's gastro intestinal. Gives her an IV with Zofran. The fluids help her a little. A little clearer headed. She can not eat at all. Doctor says hydration at this point is more important at this point. They all do a urine analysis. She's not pregnant or has UTI. In fact, she's finishing up her period. Blood panel shows nothing alarming other than low potassium. We're sent home with 25 mg Promethazine (generic for Zofran) for nausea.
June 6 and 7 Lots more throwing up and just feeling crummy. My mom starts to feel ill and I think it's the gastro thing Kaylyn has. I'm bouncing between the two like a rubber ball but staying positive for both their sakes and my sanity. Lots of positive messages given. Ask Kay about school and she's honest about second guessing about going on to Optometry school after her biology degree. She's feels like she's not as smart as some of her college peers and is concerned about the cost of optometry school. Our agreement was to pay for her first four years. She was comfortable with that idea. Overall, it's a good conversation and I feel like she got a lot of worries off her chest and I confirmed that DH and I are super proud of her no matter what she decides to do. She's an incredible human and we will support her future decisions.
June 8 and 9 My mom continues to get worse but Kay rebounds a little. In fact, her brothers take her to In and Out for a burger. Turns out my mom's thing wasn't gastro. It was diverticultis and needs surgery. Surgeon is confident my mom (79 years old) will do well with surgery to take out 2 ft of small intestine. This explains why mom was in pain after eating meals. We're all relieved that the problem has been found and can be corrected. Good positive vibes all around. I don't sense Kaylyn is overly anxious or worried about her grandma.
June 10 The misery for Kaylyn has started again in hyper mode during night. She has been taking the Zofran and getting close to the end of the bottle. It doesn't give her much relief. We practice the slow, controlled breathing when it's at its worst plus lots of showers. When I rub her back with my palm in slow motion, it seems to help calm her. Sometimes she can fall asleep which I feel is good relief so I just let her sleep whenever she can. It seems to me that she's definitely more ill in the early hours of the day and rebounds a tiny bit in the afternoon. Grandma continues to do well with her recovery after surgery. She still can't eat and is only drinking small amounts of fluids.
June 12 We head back to our family doctor practice and, this time, I insist on seeing the head doctor. Another IV with meds included. I tell him my theory about the pollen which he discounts. The PA from the June 5 visit didn't think it was that either. We talk some about anxiety. She says she feels anxious in her chest when the nausea starts to build up. I repeat the conversation to our doctor about Kaylyn's schooling so he knows that we're all good there. He orders an EKG right there in the exam room. That turns out normal. He's not concerned about that at all. This time he sends us home with more generic Zofran plus 8 mg of Ondansetron. She has lost 10 pounds between the two doctors appointments.
Through all of this, her work is super accommodating. We keep providing them with doctors notes and keeping them updated. She is assured by them that they just want her to get better. Absolutely no worries there.
June 15 My mom is now released from the hospital is recovering well at home. Kaylyn is not doing well at all. I'm staying with mom and DH has taken time off from work to stay with Kaylyn and stay on top of her hydration. He's a very good dad and is an excellent nurse. He's doing all he can for her. He gives her the same positive message about school and they talk for an hour. All is good in their conversation. He calls me to say he's taking her to the ER instead. She's in a horrible head space asking what did she do to deserve this and that she feels so defeated. This illness is really messing with her head. I meet them in the ER where she continues to throw up violently. There's nothing in her stomach to throw up. This time they do a CAT scan. Results are normal. Blood panel is normal except for Potassium. She was given two bags of IV fluids plus intravenous med. We are given 25 mg Promethegan suppositories. She is now up to 12 lbs lost. That night, as I'm refilling her Hydroflask with fresh water I have a revelation about her bottle. I ask her when was the last time she cleaned it. She admitted that she never really has, just keeps refilling it with water only (admittedly, I do the same thing). I take apart all of the pieces and notice a brown yuck in the straw. Now I think I found the problem. The hydroflask is retired for a bleach and soap soak overnight and I start giving her water with a clean glass.
June 16 Still not well but we are managing a little better with the suppositories. I'm slightly overlapping the oral meds to stay on top of nausea. Just drinking still from the clean glass. No tolerance for food.
June 17 Wakes up nauseous but is able to not vomit. As the hours go by, I notice she's doing a little better. Now she's talking about a Crunch Wrap from Taco Bell. First real interest in food in a number of days, but I told her we need to stick with the BRAT diet. She has about 1/4 cup of applesauce and nibbles on 5 crackers but doing really well with staying hydrated. We just veg for the afternoon watching our guilty pleasure show and she's really perking up. She even picks up her crochet project and works on it. We are both so happy.
June 18 (today) I wake up to hear her getting sick in the toilet. It's worse than ever in the morning. Now it's 1:40 pm and she's fallen asleep (I think from exhaustion) on the floor as I type this. As of today, she's lost 15 pounds. Tomorrow at 11 am she has an appointment with a gastrointestinal doctor. Through all of this, she's had no pain or fever. My hopes in typing all this, is to provide a log for the doctor to see and also to see if any of you out there have a magical answer that will help my poor girl.
I appreciate all feedback.
