So glad to hear that there is a solution for her. What she has been through is awful and it sounds to me like she has had her wake up call. I wish her the very best going forward.

Sounds like you can all draw a breath and move on! I have never heard of this.
Please don’t feel bad. A young adult once said to me “I made those decisions and choices myself, it was nothing to do with the way I was brought up.” Paraphrasing what someone up thread said, parenting adults is much harder than little kids where you can tuck them safely in bed each night and each day starts brand new. Good luck!

First, big hugs for the sickness your dd is going though, and the stress and worry it has caused.
Next, hooray! There's a solution. I am so, so glad there is one. It is a much better alternative to some mystery disease that no one has any clue what exactly it is, or how to solve it.
Then, hugs again. And give that sweet, intelligent dd of yours a hug.
Yes, you had the drug talk. And no, you are in no way "to blame."
But really, is she? I would say no. I would say that I would not dump guilt or shame on my kid because they made a choice to use a substance that has been made legal by our government.
She's had an experience in life. She's learning from it. That is all life really is anyway, you know? Learning.
If anything, I would say part of her treatment should include healthy means to cope with stress. And her schooling, and working, and the pressure to do well in life, surely gives her stress. It is a huge internalized burden to not disappoint our parents, our family, our community, and ourselves.
Again, Big Hugs to all of you.

As for the allergies could be allergies or MCAD. An allergist IMMUNOLOGIST is your best go to. Skin prick tests as well as specific labs for MCAD. What is MCAD?

Thanks FuzzyMutt for your post where you referenced CHS. I had tried to google "CHA" and nothing came up. I have never heard of CHS, and I know a lot of people who smoke / smoked pot. Some of the people I went to high school with smoked a shit ton of weed as young adults, pretty much every day, and none of them had the awful symptoms described here. I wonder how common (or uncommon) CHS is? coloradocropper I am glad that you have an answer. I hope your daughter is able to stop smoking. And I hope you are able to stop feeling guilty. As someone who had wonderful parents and still managed to get up to all kinds of naughty stuff, it really isn't your fault. (((Hugs))) to you.

According to the doctor, it's getting to be more and more common. Marijuana today is very different with more THC.

I hope your dd feels better soon.
Please don’t feel as though you failed her. I don’t smoke and barely drink but both of my kids smoke and, given the opportunity, my ds would drink often. We do the best we know how. When we know better we do better.
hugs.

Requoting the above for others to read.. Marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug in the U.S. Young adults are the most frequent users. A small number of these people develop CHS. It often only happens in people who have regularly used marijuana for several years. Often CHS affects those who use the drug at least once a day. ***
Recovery phase. During this time, symptoms go away. Normal eating is possible again. This phase can last days or months. Symptoms often come back if the person tries marijuana again.peasapie

Went thru three years of hell with CHS with my daughter. She still has issues at times with trigger foods. Stress is her nemesis. If you need resources, let me know. I have a ton. Best place to start is a CHS group on Facebook called Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) Recovery founded by Erica Hagler.

I live in a state where it is legal, and know a lot of people in other states where it is legal and not legal. Honestly, it’s a shame it is so stigmatized by so many people, because, quite frankly, perfectly normal and responsible people are smoking, eating edibles etc both regularly, and from time to time. A lot of the “kids” my kids ages (23-30) partake more in weed/derivatives than in alcohol. And as a parent that has never smoked (anything) or tried any edibles, I had to do a ton of research to feel like I knew what I was talking about. Anyway, out of all the adults I know that partake, I don’t know any that struggle with similar illness, and as far as I know, none of the “kids” in my kids friend groups either. My son rarely drinks, but recreational pot from time to time. Her ex was a long term, daily smoker/edible user, who had an insanely high tolerance. My daughter described it in terms of how much of an edible candy bar he would consume vs what others in their group would consume. If it matters for our “Pea Research” he was a shortish guy, slight build. Worked a good, physical job. Seemed normal. But it came to my attention because he begged off on alot of things because he was sick. Also, the seizures. It just kept progressing and progressing. Eventually he moved back to his parents house in another state to deal with the seizures etc because he wouldn’t quit. I have no idea how he is now. I hope he’s better. And I’m glad as hell they broke up. I don’t think it’s common at all, and I don’t know how much of the severity or the presence is related to volume, longevity or abuse.

Also, pot or pot products can be the cause of anxiety! My dil took something with Delta-8 in it and had to be rushed to the ER with terrible symptoms one of which was overwhelming anxiety.
I'm so glad that you and dd are getting answers - I had never heard of CHS before this thread. Please don't blame yourself at all - I think most of us have done a lot that our parents wouldn't have condoned. The good news is her symptoms are so bad that it should be easier for her to quit now that she knows what is probably causing all of it. ((((hugs!))))

I think CHS is more common than people realize. Not everyone has violent vomitimg (CHS groups call it scromiting) and instead have almost daily nausea and heartburn, as well as other milder symptoms. Some people even get sick only in the morning and then go about their day. A classic symptom is a feeling of what I call general ick where you can't eat unless you smoke a little to settle your stomach. And most people don't share GI issues. Pot today is so much stronger than previous history knew.

Thanks peas for always bringing awareness. I had never heard of CHA or CHS. coloradocropper I'm so happy your daughter is ok & has a path to better health. peasapie CHS is Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome, a condition that leads to repeated and severe bouts of vomiting. It results from long-term use of marijuana. Most people self-treat using hot showers to help reduce their symptoms. Some people with CHS may not be diagnosed for several years.

So glad your DD's illness has a cure!
And thank you for educating me about CHS - I had no idea. Two of my kids are in college and have close friends who have (in their words) an addiction to weed. I will pass this along to them.
Although they claim not to use it, I am aware that its use has been normalized at both colleges. It scares me, tbh, because I don't know how they can tell what's in it - I'm afraid one mistake might be one mistake too many.

It's actually quite different for everybody. We were quite lucky that it happened during the summer. Had she gone through this during the semester, it would have been disasterous for her education.

I am glad that you finally got an answer, that it is something that she can avoid, and also glad that I went to college in the days when pot was milder.☺️
I am one who has often had to learn things the hard way, and you are right that those are the lessons that we remember the best.

It’s true, that I can be different for everybody, but there are definitely threads that are in common. Therefore, I’ll simply say that to me, my understanding is, it’s much like an alcoholic, waking up with the tremors in the morning. This is been going on long enough that I don’t think your daughter was only using marijuana at school. I hope your daughter gets it under control, and I agree it is awesome that she’s able to go through this while not during the term. I’m glad that she’ll have the opportunity to not have an affect her education. Her choice though.
